Years ago, (seems like a lifetime now) I rolled in late-night to a bar called Whiskey Creek in Mammoth Lakes, California. It was a weeknight and the place was half empty, but the other half was all local: goggle tanned ski instructors, lift ops on their last dollar, off duty cat drivers, and bored, alcoholic wives of the idle rich scattered around the room. The band had just finished playing and I made the mistake of rolling up to the bar next to an older guy who had already been there too long. He turned, one hand on an old fashioned, looked me straight in the eye and before I could say hey, said, “I’m working out a way to put anyone in “the zone” any time they want.”

On December 5, 2013 Ben Harper and Tony Hawk kicked off the second annual Boards + Bands auction to benefit at-risk youth from the Clive Davis Theater at The Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, California.
The Boards + Bands initiative brings together the worlds of skateboarding and music to benefit the work of the Tony Hawk Foundation, which helps bring high quality public skateparks to underprivileged children in low-income communities. The chosen recording artists have hand-written the lyrics on one-of-a-kind skateboards from each skater. . . . “The second annual boards and bands has arrived!” said Harper. “I couldn’t be more proud of the work we’ve done at the Tony Hawk Foundation—it is an honor to serve as a member of the Board. Skatepark building is community building, so please help us spread the word about this year’s auction. Thank you!”
Musician and skater match-ups include some interesting combinations like Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin “Candle In The Wind” on a Chris Cole deck; Daft Punk “Technologic” on Aaron ”Jaws” Homoki’s board; and Panda Bear “You Can Count On Me” with Andrew Reynolds. Justin Bieber was caught rolling Sydney, Australia’s Waterloo skatepark by the Daily Mail this week and he was sporting his new favorite hat company’s logo: Brixton.
While we’re quite certain the teen sensation is not on the Brixton flow team, there is nothing that turns the numbers like a little free promo on one of the world’s most talked about people. And right during the Christmas rush no less. Doesn’t seem like you could plan for anything this good.

In another sign of the skateboard industry’s mainstream collapse, the Puehse Twins, two underage skateboarders whose dad seemed dead set on making them the next Tony Hawk in terms of sponsorship dollars and media coverage, have apparently decided that the real money is in doubles tennis, according to a story in the New York Times.
Eschewing a future as twin Tony Hawks, Nic and Tristan decided two years ago to try to become the next Bob and Mike Bryan, the No. 1-ranked men’s doubles tennis team. The jump from the anarchistic world of skateboarding to the button-down sport of tennis has been their toughest trick.
Can’t say we even wondered what these talented twins were up to lately, but seriuosly, if they’re really in it for the money, shouldn’t they be practicing their golf stroke?

In episode two of Jon Holland’s Z-Flex historical series The Original we get to look back at the very beginning.
Hand crafted by Kent Sherwood in 1976, Kent’s mission was to make a board that could keep up with the intense skating of his step-son, Jay Adams. As Aaron Scott puts it, “with Kent’s background in fiberglass, they were hoping this would actually last Jay Adams’ skating”. Kent worked tirelessly on perfecting a board that would pioneer an industry to come.
