Ari Marcopolous’ Within Arm’s Reach At BAM

by The Editors on September 21, 2009

Marcopoulos2Photographer Ari Marcopolous has a new show opening on Wednesday night (September 23, 2009) at the University of California at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive titled Within Arm’s Reach.

Ari Marcopoulos’s photographs convey a remarkable feeling of intimacy. He draws the viewer into relationships with his subjects that could only have been achieved through a powerful experience of empathy and engagement. Self-taught as a photographer, Marcopoulos makes photographs that are often imbued with a subtle formalism, a classical austerity—informed by the artist’s broad knowledge of art history—combined with an intuitive approach and an ability to adapt to the moment.

There will also be a new book released at the show the will go perfectly in our library next to Transitions And Exits. The show runs through February 7, 2010. For more information follow the link.

by The Editors on September 16, 2009

Riley Hawk doesn’t say a whole lot in this interview. But watching him interact with his dad is classic. Best thing about having Tony Hawk for a dad? “He understands what I’m talking about.”

Rune Gets Racy With His BMW M3

by The Editors on September 14, 2009

Glifberg M5Rune Glifberg wants to go racing with his newest “used” BMW M3, according to a story on European Car Web.

Project E46 Racecar came to fruition when Glifberg found this pristine 2003 M3 for $21,500 with 65,000 miles. . . As this is written, the car takes up temporary residence at Evosport in Huntington Beach, Calif., where it will undergo the transformation from streetable to full-fledged track machine. The guys at Evosport have been building and racing the E46 M3 since 2001, and if the long line of custom M3s stationed out back is any indication, our little project is in capable hands.

Sounds like Rune is going racing. . .

by The Editors on September 14, 2009

Dc LogoQuiksilver has gone deep into the footwear industry and named Anton Nistl as the new president of DC Shoes, according to a story in the Orange County Business Journal.

He takes over running DC Shoes from former global president Nick Adcock and Americas general manager Mark Miller who left in recent months. . . . Day One Photos including ASR Opening party, Billabong’s Still Filthy and Quik Ry Craike Party

Day Two Photos including Class @ ASR and the ASR Fashion Show.

There are crowds walking the isles of the 2009 Fall ASR Show at the San Diego Convention Center. But the show is visibly smaller (click here for the mondo panorama image). The economy is still an issue, but most of the people we’ve spoken to this morning are feeling optimistic.

The 2009 Crossroads Best Trick

by The Editors on September 9, 2009

090909 47
Chris Cole’s judo three was just a small part of his $2000 trickery tonight.

The Crossroads Best Trick was jam session after jam session as the packed house moved through the Blackbox skatepark to get the best angle on the features. It started with the stairs, moved to the barrels, and then to the water gap open, the water gap with a rainbow, and the water gap with a flat bar. The skating was non-stop.

At one point we heard Christian Hosoi turn to Dave Duncan and say, “I don’t know how they can slam so many times and not be hurt.” We couldn’t have agreed more. Then Dave replied matter-of-factly, “They’re kids!”

090909 54ABy 9:40 PM when Jamie Thomas began handing out the cash it was pretty obvious that the crowd agreed with the results. Andrew Pott got $1,000 on the stars, Ke’Chaud Johnson took home $2,000 on the barrel jump (14 barrels), edging out Slash and Danny Scher who both got 13 barrels, Tyler Hendley took $1,000 on the water gap and Chris Cole got a big $2,000 paycheck for winning. If you have any questions, check out Jamie’s offical results sheet at right.
