Skateboarder Dies In Hit And Run

by The Editors on February 1, 2010

030 0001Skateboarder Lucas Gianconelli, 15, died after being stuck by a car Friday evening in Vista, California. The car did not stop. It seems a 92-year-old man is responsible, according to a story on NBC San Diego.

Authorities said that at a vigil for Lucas that was held Saturday night, the 92-year-old man stopped by and asked a deputy what was going on. The deputy explained what had happened, and, officials said, the man told him he had been driving on the street around the time of the accident and thought he had hit a small animal. . . Deputies followed the man home and found damage to his car consistent with a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle. The man has cooperated with detectives, investigators said.

Our thoughts are with Lucas’ family and friends.

Madonna’s Boyfriend Goes Skateboarding

by The Editors on January 29, 2010

Article-0-08118Fb7000005Dc-344 468X792And in the biggest news in skateboarding today, Madonna’s “22-year-old lover” Jesus Luz was reportedly seen rolling around Rio De Janeiro’s Ipanema Beach on an motorized skateboard, according to the Daily Mail.

But while big kid Luz was looking more youthful than ever in his graphic shorts and muscle-baring black vest, Madonna was looking a little puffy-faced back in London.

The British press apparently has no sympathy for 51-year-old cougars.

by The Editors on January 26, 2010

NorCal skate legend John Cardiel takes In The CUTTS on a tour of Sacramento skate spots. His 2004 injury in Australia has not slowed him down one bit as is obvious in this interview. He can’t skate the way he used to, but he rolls a fixie better than most.

Rob Brink vs. TSM’s Best Am Tyler Bledsoe

by The Editors on January 26, 2010

Tsm-Tyler-Bledsoe-Intro2

How can you not keep reading an interview that starts out like this:

Ask anyone who knows Tyler Bledsoe and they’ll tell you that on the rare occasions he actually does speak, it’s usually the funniest, most epic utterance of the day. They’ll also tell you how gifted of a skateboarder he is… which is no bullshit. In fact, despite it’s complimentary nature, is still probably an understatement.

As we’ve reminded Rob Brink several times. . . if we read everything we posted we’d never have time to post. But this one looks good and we’d read it if we had time. Honestly.

Rebagliati Rolls The Olympic Torch

by The Editors on January 25, 2010

27983 M15

Ross Rebagliati, the first snowboarder to ever win an Olympic Gold medal (and have it taken away and given back) took to the streets yesterday on a skateboard and carried the Olympic Torch for 300 meters near Osoyoos, BC without smoking it. According to CTV it was pretty heavy.

“That was very, very exciting, emotional,” Mr. Rebagliati, 38, said after completing his torch run on wheels, as his wife, bundled-up baby and parents tried to keep up on the side of the highway.

Rebagliati took the opportunity to talk to the media about the legalization of marijuana.

“Prohibition didn’t work; this isn’t working,” he said after running with the torch, which some have even said resembles a giant joint. . . “You look at the numbers; it’s not helping by throwing people in jail. I think the thing we can focus on is helping people with addictions, taking a proactive view. . . How can we help people rather than throw them in jail?” Mr. Rebagliati was jubilant in his post-skateboard moment, and either forgot about his party’s edict that he not speak to the news media, or chose to ignore it.

Smoke two joints in the morning, smoke two joints at night. . .

Hawai’ian Hill Bombers

by The Editors on January 25, 2010

The downhill skateboarding underground is alive and well in Hawai’i not that anyone was worried, according to the Honolulu Advertiser.

The burgeoning sport has found particular traction in Hawai’i, where outlaw events like the Tantalus 420 are captured and transmitted across the Pacific, where informal groups like 808 Bomberz of Maui bring together longboard enthusiasts of all stripe, and where skaters such as Ryan Lau have become local legends. . . “They’re their own subculture,” said 18-year-old skateboarder Noil Buscaglia.

Watching these guys blowing by big, green, leafy jungle does have an hypnotic effect.

Alien Workshop x Dead New York Artist

by The Editors on January 22, 2010

Andy-Warhol-X-Alien-Workshop-Skate-Decks-01

It was three years ago today (January 22, 2007) that Burton Snowboards rolled out their Andy Warhol Foundation collaboration featuring boards, boots, and outerwear decorated with Warhol art. Now, in 2010 Burton’s skateboard company Alien Workshop appears to be doing the same thing, according to a post on their website.

As the preeminent American artist of the 20th Century, Andy Warhol challenged the world to see art differently. This distinctive project presents a new approach to skateboard/artist collaborations by pairing unique examples of Warhol’s groundbreaking artwork with each of the ten iconoclast pro riders sponsored by Alien Workshop. . . .Featuring five pro decks with works from Warhol’s Death & Disaster Series and five pro decks showcasing his iconic Pop works, the complete set is shipped in custom printed board box packaging inspired by Warhol’s box sculptures from the 1960’s.

Andy would likely be happy to see the same company recycling his art over and over again. We’re wondering when the Channel Islands dead artist collab will be announced, or did we already miss that one?
