SPoT’s Rob Meronek Gets Down To Business

by The Editors on March 12, 2010

1461 Lg Spot Rob.JpgOn the eve of the 2010 Tampa Pro contest writer Colin Bane interviews Skate Park of Tampa’s Rob Meronek and gets a look into the contest business that Meronek, Ryan Clements, and Brian Schaefer have stumbled into with SPoTlight Productions. Rob hints at their work for Rob Dyrdek’s upcoming Street League and discusses why their partnership with Nike works so well. It’s all up on Shop-Eat-Surf.com.

For one thing I know everyone we’ve ever dealt with at Nike is a skateboarder and is right on our level. From a regular skate rat kid perspective the things they’ve done right are backing skateboarding, making great shoes, and getting a great team. . . .But behind the scenes what they did right in the industry was to get a great staff that’s on it, bring in some actual skateboarders and then, you know, actually listen to them, let them have the reins. Nick Halkias over there is great to work with. We grew up skating with him and he used to work at the skatepark. The team manager, Hunter Muraira, actually skates, which is more than a lot of TM’s can say. He can’t kickflip very well, but he can skate. Kevin Imamura too.

There’s much more, so click the link to read the rest.

P-Rod’s Game Of Skate In Sacramento

by The Editors on March 8, 2010

Paul Rodriguez was in Sacramento, California yesterday (March 7, 2010) for Nike SB’s roll out of the new Omar Salazar shoe at the 28th & B Skatepark. By 2 PM the park was packed. Close to 1,000 made it in and maybe 200 more lurked in the parking lot and peered in through the fence. Police were on the scene, the Sacramento Fire Department showed up worried that there weren’t proper exits from the park.

Amidst of all this chaos, P-Rod took time to play a game of skate with two kids who will probably remember this day forever.

Omar will be joined by Paul Rodriguez, Stefan Janoski, Brian Anderson, Justin Brock, Grant Taylor, Daryl Angel, David Clark, Elissa Steamer, and Brad Staba. Yeah, it’s a pretty big deal.

Plan Billabong Skateboards

by The Editors on March 5, 2010

Branch LogoToday Element’s Johnny Schillereff announced that Billabong has reeled Plan B Skateboards into an “exclusive 10-year agreement” and that Plan B will be operating out of the Element headquarters in Irvine, California.

“The Billabong group’s unwavering support has helped Element blaze the trails we’ve always dreamed of,” Schillereff said. “Plan B is iconic and deep within the fabric of skateboarding and we couldn’t be happier to unite with them.”

Colin McKay agrees.

“Billabong and Element clearly understand brand building,” he said. “Danny, the team and I couldn’t be happier with the opportunity to leverage their strengths and help Plan B reach its full potential.”

Billabong knows better than most that skateboard hardgoods are a great loss leader for selling logo T’s, denim, and even shoes. Plus, we’re sure it’s going to help add a little more diversity to the Billabong mall stores that have been popping up here and there lately. Chalk up another win for Paul Naude.

Transworld Skateboarding Staffs Up

by The Editors on March 4, 2010

Ben KellyOn the heels of the news that Transworld Skateboarding scribe Ben Kelly (pictured right) was promoted to the position of editor, comes the announcement that former ESPN Skateboard blogger Josh Brooks has been hired as associate editor.
Ben Kelly rolls into the promotion after working as acting editor since the death of Transworld Skateboarding editor Eric Stricker in September 2009.

“I am honored to carry the torch for former editor and dear friend Eric Stricker, and am excited for the new challenges that lay in front of me with this transition,” said Kelly. This new role enables me to engage in new opportunities through strategic edit planning, while maintaining a strong connection to our reader through the various content projects in which I am involved.”

Josh Brooks-1Brooks, a former employee of drug maker Genentech, is apparently happy about his move to Transworld.

“It’s gone through many changes, but TransWorld SKATEboarding—started in 1983—has had a long history in skateboarding,” said Brooks. “It has always covered all facets of skating. . . . I’m honored to work with Skin Phillips, Ben Kelly and the rest of the edit crew to carry on that history, bring a new perspective to the amazing skate photos in the mag and improve the content on the web.”
