Randy Wright isn’t saying much about the closure of the Horizons West Surf Shop last month, according to a story in the Santa Monica Daily Press. But to fans of the Dogtown & Z-Boys story it was a sad day.
The skate and surf shop, owned by surfer Randy Wright, occupied a modest, one-story building at the corner of Main and Bay streets that was designated a city landmark in May of 2007 after neighbors and skateboarding enthusiasts erupted in outrage over plans to tear it down and replace it with a mixed-use development. The retail space was the original home of Zephyr and Jeff Ho Productions, whose founders, Skip Engblom and Jeff Ho, created the Zephyr Skate Team, which became known as The Z-Boys. . . Wright did not return several phone calls seeking comment.
Guess we can’t expect a retailer to live on the past forever.

This story has been written up pretty much everywhere already, but as Podium was nice enough to send out the press release (including this photo of Mike Dunlap and Justin Reyes) we decided we’d throw in our two cents.
Here’s what they’re saying:
Under the terms of the new agreement Billabong will distribute Podium brands DVS, Matix, and Lakai in Australia as well as New Zealand alongside its current line of in-house brands including Element, Nixon, Von Zipper, Kustom Footwear and Plan B. . . .Although Billabong will assume full distribution of Podium’s brands in Australia, the company’s distribution responsibilities in New Zealand will be limited to Billabong’s company retail store channels as well as stores belonging to the Billabong-owned Amazon retail chain.
Looks like step one in a much more meaningful relationship down the road, something no one denied when Podium interviewed itself on Transworld Business.
Chalk up another win for the Bong. Follow the jump for the official release.

One of the Northwest’s best indoor skateparks, the Department of Skateboarding is closed today, August 16, 2010 after eight and a half years in operation. Here’s what the Dept had to say about it:
As you may or may not have already heard, the building that The Dept. and Cal’s Pharmacy have occupied for the last 9 years was sold a few months ago. The new building owners weren’t going to immediately occupy the building and were able to allow the park to remain open but beginning next month will have to start some re-modeling work to re-purpose the space and need to have the course removed to do so. Work on the course removal will begin next week so this Sunday August 15th will be the last day the park will be open to skate. [NOTE: CAL’S PHARMACY WILL REMAIN OPEN..ONLY THE DEPT. IS CLOSING]
Guess it’s back out into the rain for the lot of you.

Drew Dezort picked up top money on the $10,000 Crossroads Best Trick quarterpipe, Nick Garcia backside nose blunted his way to $1,200 on the rainbow, and Sasha Daily nabbed $2,500 on the rail. For his work on the rail Kechaud Johnson (frontside feeble above) got $250 and David Loy picked up $500 for being the first to get all the kinks.
