This is probably more than anyone ever wants to know about a tight, kinked, and ugly backyard pool in Sydney, Australia. But aside from the annoying narration it’s an entertaining 26 minutes of skateboarding, art, and nudity. . . apparently.
With the stability of their financial empire in question and their plans to move and/or sell the Sacramento Kings NBA team it would seem that the Maloofs would have bigger things than skateboarding on their minds. But when the whole novelty of their skateboarding event hinges on “money”, then the prize purse is pretty important.
“The skating population has grown tremendously in Washington D.C. and right now it lacks the number of skate parks needed to support this growth,” said Joe Maloof, founder of Maloof Money Cup and owner of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings and the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. “Our intent is to build a skate park for the community like we did in New York City. We’ve been in talks with a number of cities to host Maloof Money Cup and figured what better place to expand in 2011 than our nation’s capital.”
It didn’t take The Street League’s Rob Dyrdek long to respond to the Maloof ante up with a prize purse boost of his own pushing TSL’s purse up to $1.6 million, according to a story on MSNBC.com.
“You have to understand that despite what it looks like from the outside looking in, street skateboarding is 80 percent of action sports,” Dyrdek said. “There’s 15 million participants in action sports, and 10 million of them are street skaters. It has its own self-sustaining market where it never really needed mainstream contests. But now it’s sort of this dance, which really comes between Street League and Maloof Money Cup, where they came in as I was developing this, and then that just sort of drove it up, which I think is incredible for the sport.
Incredible for the sport? We’re not so sure. Seems what would be better for skateboarding would be for everyone to work together toward one unified street skateboarding title. But then, Dyrdek and the Maloofs would have to work together. And it doesn’t seem that either enjoy sitting back while someone else makes the decisions–especially with so much money on the line.
Nothing like a little b-side footie from new shoe dude Braydon Szafranski. Right? Don’t ever think this whole “skateboarding superstar” thing is easy. It’s not.
Skatehalle Berlin reportedly gave their bowl a little tuneup getting ready for Clash 2011 to be held May 20-11, 2011. Wouldn’t mind a few lonely warm up hours on this little bit of perfection. Which reminds us: we’ve never been to Berlin. Hard to believe, but true. . . Follow the jump for more info. [click to continue…]

Don’t think that photographer/musician/DJ Atiba Jefferson just sits around shooting photos. Nope. Guy can roll as proved by this buying-lunch showdown with Paul Rodriguez.
Former pro skateboarder Chad Shetler won his third consecutive Ultimate Boarder Championship on Saturday, April 9, 2011 by finishing fourth in the skateboarding event. Snowboarders Trevor Jacob and Shayne Pospisil finished second and third. Shelter was able to win the event without placing top three in any of the event.
“ I am incredibly stoked to have come out on top, especially since this was the toughest year of competition yet in terms of the high caliber of athletes and the rough elements,” said Shetler. . . “Overall it was a pretty amazing week, and getting to miss work to go snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding, is definitely something you can’t beat,” added Shetler who has a full time job in the marketing department at LOST, an action sports company based in Orange County.
Other finishers of note included Tosh Townend in 5th, Aaron Astorga in 11th, Chas Guldemond in 12th, and Kalani David in 16th. Follow the jump for full results. [click to continue…]
When ever anyone thinks of skateboarding as something more than rolling around on a plank with wheels, thank Craig Stecyk. His Dogtown stories (and photos) took a bunch of Santa Monica kids and turned them into mythological heros with stories that carried a generation of readers far past the land of empty pools and smooth asphalt and into a world of possibilities.
I started shooting surfers in 1962 or ’63 — I was interested in documenting what I was seeing, and magazines weren’t doing it yet. The skate shots came later — just like there was demand for Miki Dora in surfing magazines, there was soon demand for Tony Alva. But I shot everything for no particular reason, which is what I still do today.
The info is sparse, but reading this makes us what to see the show that much more. Art in the Streets opens April 17, 2011, but MOCA members can attend the opening on Saturday evening, April 16, 2011 beginning at 7 PM. Household membership is $100 (enter STREETS for 10% off).
On what was probably the worst day to go surfing this spring competitors in the Ultimate Boarder Championships weather the storm at Cardiff, California’s Seaside Reef to complete stage two of the boardsports triathlon.
Surfer Nathan Zoller won the solo surf event, but his 27th place in snow relegated him to 9th place over all. With a 10th place finish snowboarder Shayne Pospisil cemented his lead in the overall competition. Go snow!
Todd Richards, who did not surf, is currently in last position in the overall. Stage three continues on Saturday with skateboarding in the Seaside Reef parking lot. Event starts at 10 AM. Bring chairs. Follow the jump for full results. [click to continue…]
