On Wednesday, February 8, 2012 Hurley will debut Craig Stecyk’s new short film Fin at the H Space Gallery in Costa Mesa, Callifornia.
FIN, the first installment in an evolutionary series of digital film shorts, details Stecyk’s method of working with a wide variety of personages in the southern California region and reflects the social and sonic landscapes in which these creators inhabit. People whose work has been documented so far include Von Dutch, Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, Evel Knievel, Dave Sweet, Julian Ness, Tom Blake, Dale Velzy, Tyler Hatzikian, Scott Anderson, Mitch Abshere, Scotty Stopnick, Mike Ness, and Roland Sands. The featured soundtrack is also a nod to West Coast visionaries, with Social Distortion, Breakdown, Tommy Guerrero and Steve Alba and the Powerflex 5 contributing to the project.
Along with the film will be a series of four T-shirts featuring artwork and still photography created during the making of the film. The H Space Gallery is located at 1945 Placentia Ave, Costa Mesa, California. Follow the jump for the T-shirts and more info. [click to continue…]
From early pioneers such as Jay Adams, Tony Alva, and Steve Caballero through the giants of the 1980s and 1990s, including Tony Hawk and Brian Anderson, to such legends of the scene today as James Hardy and Justin Figueroa, every icon of skating has graced the cover of Thrasher, captured in mid-air and mid-action by the sharpest shooters around. . . Organized chronologically, and including every cover published in Thrasher’s first thirty years—even long out-of-print and hard-to-find collectible issues—the book at last reveals the stories behind these legendary cover-photo shoots, as told by the skaters, photographers, and editors who made these the most iconic mementos of skate culture.
The search for someone to host a fictional new extreme sporting show called The Gnar Zone has potential to be one of the funniest new webisodes on Youtube. Check it. . .
As we follow the launch of the new Youtube action sports channels, here’s the teaser for Network A, the channel being created by Wasserman Media Group and Bedrocket. According to sources, it will go live later today right here. Tony Hawk’s The Ride Channel is already live. We still want good video without having to wade through all the stuff we don’t want to watch and so far these new “channels” don’t seem to be helping much in that pursuit.
Lachlan Burgess, a 17-year-old Australian skateboarder is now dead after falling while skateboard towing behind his friend’s car in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales on Monday, January 16, 2012, according to a story on News.com.au.
Police said Lachy fell from his skateboard about halfway down Plunkett Drive, impacting heavily with the road. He suffered major head injuries and sadly died at the scene.
According to The Border Mail several of Burgess’ friends phone were confiscated by police because the crash may have been caught on video. Burgess’ friend who was driving the car has been charged with “manslaughter and dangerous driving occasioning death.” Another sad reminder.
Landen Swanson, a 20-year-old skateboarder from Vista, California, died January 13, 2011 from injuries he sustained when he was hit-and-runned on January 9, 2012, according to a story on 10News.com.
Longtime family friend Staci Bevell told 10News media partner U-T San Diego the skateboarded was Landen Swanson. . . Swanson was taken off life support Friday when it was determined he had no brain activity so three of his organs could be donated, Bevell told the newspaper. . . A 35-year-old San Marcos man called authorities several hours after the incident and confessed to striking the skateboarder, authorities have said.
Our thoughts are with Swanson’s family and friends.
On January 17, 2012 Goggle/Youtube’s latest attempt at channeling quality content to high paying advertisers will launch across the web.
In the action space we have The Ride Channel from Tony Hawk Inc. (above), Network A, a joint venture between Wasserman Media Group and a company called Bedrocket, and then there is The Red Bull Channel which will likely feature a collection of all those “wild, crazy, unbelievable” videos your grandparents are constantly forwarding to you from Red Bull Media House.
Each channel was reportedly given $1 million against a share of future advertising earnings. Not exactly bubble money, but not that bad either. Without going to deeply into the logic right now, we’ll just say that we’re not exactly bullish on the whole old-media “network channel” concept. We are, however, looking forward to The Weekend Buzz featuring Rob Brink and Erica Yary. It will be on The Ride Channel and it looks good.
Tommy Guerrero, Steve Caballero, Rodney Mullen, Lance Mountain, Mike McGill, Stacy Peralta and George Powell have all confirmed their attendance. A Q & A will follow the film. Unfortunately, Tony Hawk will be out of the country and will not be able to attend.
As if Tony not being there weren’t’ enough, there’s another rub: tickets are only available through the Santa Barbara Film Festival via passes or Mini-Packs. The cheapest is a 4-pack for $57. Team up because one 4-pack can be used for four people to one film. Red carpet begins at 7 PM, film at 8. Seating is on a first-come, first served basis meaning get there early if you want to see it this. Follow the jump for the rest of the details. [click to continue…]
After a stellar opening party Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the LA HUF store product from the collaboration between HUF, DLX, and the Japanese wood sculptor Haroshi is finally dropping.
Haroshi is a self taught artist born in 1978 and currently based out of Tokyo, Japan. Combining years of experience as a jewelry craftsman with his long-time passion for skateboarding, Haroshi has developed a unique ability to salvage and hand-carve stacks of used skateboard decks into extraordinary three-dimensional wooden sculptures. Juxtaposing the rough, worn rails of the used decks with the polished forms of their finished product, Haroshi demonstrates and uncanny capability to create beauty out of destruction.
