Upcycled Sk8Lamps By Victor Perez

by The Editors on March 21, 2012

Lamp002Victor Perez has been skateboarding since 1977. He was sponsored by Kryptonics and Santa Cruz in the 198o’s but as with many skaters his interests turned to art. His latest work is the Sk8Lamp, a series of high-end lighting centered around skateboard inspired shapes and reclaimed lighting fixtures.

Sk8lamps is different. It’s about the repurposing of otherwise discarded materials to a new, improved state. The lamps are constructed of used or rejected decks, wheels and trucks that have either fulfilled or cannot fulfill their intended purposes. The electrical pieces are removed from devices no longer deemed aesthetically pleasing and given extended life. It’s more than a recycled skateboard, a recycled lamp, or a recycled idea. It is Upcycling. The Upcycling is art. The Art is unique.

The work pictured at right is titled the Rolling Verical Cheese and it’s for sells for $315. To check out more click the link.

New York Times Drinks The Water

by The Editors on January 10, 2012

Dog-Drinkwater-3-Articlelarge-1Austin Smith and Bryan Fox better keep those Drink Water screen printing presses running after being featured in a New York Times story on January 7, 2012.

Fox and Smith say they find the heavy marketing of such products, especially toward younger fans, problematic. Top brands like Red Bull, Monster Energy and Rockstar have swarmed the international sports market, sponsoring athletes, events and video shoots in motorsports, surfing, snowboarding and skiing, mixed martial arts and others. Brand logos appear on event structures like half pipes, and on athletes’ apparel and equipment.

All we can say is more power to them.

Each time Santa Monica, California high-school teacher Benjamin Kay goes surfing he picks up all the trash he finds brings it back to throw away, according to a story in the Santa Monica Mirror. The photo above is just one Sunday’s catch. Now he’s trying to get more people involved with a Paddle Clean-up.

“I’d like to engage the surfing, boogie board, paddle board, kayak, and diving communities in an aquatic cleanup to help us all get on the same page about the reasons for and sources of plastic pollution and build a greater activist coalition,” he said. “I heard a guy in the water yesterday blame beach-going litter bugs for the problem, but the reasons for plastics into our oceans is much more complex than that.”

If everyone does a little. . .

Food from the garden also will be donated to a program for teenage mothers in Vista.

No one grows “green” sponsors better than Farmer Bob. What next, a new eco-house project sponsored by Home Depot?

Merchant Bails Out Bio-Plastics Company

by The Editors on November 9, 2010

Plantic LogoBillabong founder Gordon Merchant has decided to pay $8 million dollars to help save a business that makes biodegradable plastics. Plantic Technologies is a Melbourne, Australia-based company that creates “green” plastics made from corn starch, according to as story on Goldcoast,com.au.

Since Plantic’s shares listed at 64 pence ($1.02) each in 2005, they have fallen to ‘penny dreadful’ status, trading around 4 pence for most of the year and creating a sizeable hole in the value of Mr Merchant’s original investment. . . The businessman, who is currently in the US attending the funeral of surfer Andy Irons, has proposed a scheme of arrangement where he would acquire the remaining capital of Plantic that he does not already own. . . Mr Merchant made the offer of 8 pence a share on July 24, and this has since boosted the Plantic share price to around the offer level over the past three months. . . The Plantic board has recommended shareholders accept the offer, in the absence of a superior bid.

Hopefully, it will all work out. The world could use better plastic.
