P-Rod Goes Buoloco

by The Editors on October 15, 2012

The best part about watching Buoloco interviews is the facial expressions of people while they try to figure out what Ed is saying. Paul Rodriguez is not immune. Watch as the professional manages to stay professional in the face of nearly impossible to understand questions.

Andy Warhol Surf Film Premieres After 44 years

by The Editors on September 14, 2012

Warholsurf

We’ve all experienced surf, skate, or snowboard films that seem to be in perpetual completion, however, no one has Andy Warhol beat. Forty-four years ago, Warhol filmed San Diego Surf with collaborator Paul Morrissey, in La Jolla, California. This was “just months before” he was shot, according to a story on Artinfo.com. And now, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City is finally premiering the film as part of their 10th Annual film preservation festival.

The Warhol-directed feature, whose loose narrative centers on an acrimonious married couple played by Superstars Taylor Mead and Viva who rent their beach-side home to a group of surfers, was only partially edited at the time. Morrissey was then commissioned by the Andy Warhol Foundation in 1995-96 to finish editing the film, with the help of Foundation curator Dara Meyers-Kingsley.“Even twenty five years after his death Warhol continues to surprise contemporary audiences,” Warhol Museum director Eric Shiner said in the premiere announcement yesterday. “This never-before-seen film expands Warhol’s filmic legacy and demonstrates Warhol’s read on the west coast and its surfing culture.”

We’re guessing it’s going to be an amazing time capsule of a crazy New York artist’s version of the San Diego surf scene. But hey, Tom Wolfe did it, why not Andy? San Diego Surf will be shown for the first time at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City on October 16, 2012. MoMA is located at 11 West 53rd Street, New York City.

Surf Legend Terry “Tubesteak” Tracy Dies

by The Editors on August 23, 2012

Tubesteak-1Terry “Tubesteak” Tracy, the legendary Malibu surfer who reportedly kicked off Hollywood’s love affair with surfing by loaning Kathy Kohner “a surfboard in exchange for a peanut butter sandwich” has died, according to a story in the OC Register. He was 77 years old.

As he told the Register in 2002, he took to sleeping on the beach at Malibu in the mid 1950s and built a wooden shack that included palm fronds and thatched bamboo mat. He lived in it for two years, holding court there as many of the best surfers of the day would surf at Malibu. A girl appeared one day at the shack – which eventually was bulldozed – and she wanted to surf, Tracy said. The girl reminded Tracy of a short girl he’d once met at a party, named Gidget. He said he told this newcomer to the shack that he’d loan her a surfboard in return for a peanut butter sandwich she was carrying. He took to calling her Gidget.

The girl’s father wrote the book Gidget and we all know the rest of the story. Tracy later became a fixture at San Onofre beach. According to the story he “died peacefully at his home Wednesday.” Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Beastie Boys File Monster Lawsuit

by The Editors on August 17, 2012

Reg 300.Beastie.Ls.8912According to a story on Eonline.com, the Beastie Boys have filed a lawsuit against Monster Energy Drink “claiming the [company] tried to create “an association” with the Beastie Boys by using several of their hit tunes in a promotional campaign without properly licensing them.”

First up, the plaintiffs don’t want to see Monster Energy’s promotional video for its 2012 Ruckus in the Rockies event, which the suit claims was posted to the drink’s website in May, in its current incarnation ever again. . . According to the complaint, the video is “comprised substantially of excerpts from the Beastie Boys Sound Recordings and the Beastie Boys Musical Compositions totaling more than three minutes in duration.”

Looks like the group is sticking to the letter of Adam Yauch’s will in which he stated that “in no event may my image or name or any music or any artistic property created by me be used for advertising purposes.”

All this and being investigated by one state’s attorney general? It would appear that Monster is beginning to reap what it has sown.

Tristan Prettyman’s Cedar Bungalow Tour

by The Editors on August 17, 2012

Tristan PrettySongstress (and former Transworld Media intern) Tristan Prettyman has come a long way since IMing MP3’s of her home-recorded tracks around to friends and family. Now, the Wall Street Journal takes us all on a tour of the place where she wrote most of the songs from her upcoming album Cedar and Gold (which drops September 25, 2012).

After . . . Tristan Prettyman’s engagement to pop star Jason Mraz ended in 2010, she retreated to the cedar bungalow where she’d lived as a child. Her father, a former carpenter, had renovated the house months earlier, hoping it would be a place for the couple to live in after they married.

Sounds like Tristan has all she needs: a great place to live and the continually broken heart that inspires her best work.
