BNQT Media Group Explains Their Ad Game

by The Editors on January 5, 2010

Bnqt SiteWith BNQT Media Group USA Today and its parent Gannett Co. have quietly snuck up on mainstream action sports advertising by aggregating some of the ad sales of smaller blogs and websites into one large platform. For better or worse, this brings mainstream advertisers like Ball Park Franks, Dial Soap, and KMart-Sears and their money to smaller blogs

Formerly called the Cold War Collective, BNQT Media Group now represents 50 sites including like Surfline.com, Surfersvillage.com, Snowboard-Mag.com, Concretedisciples.com, and Freecaster.tv. While the 50-50 revenue share may not be that attractive to some online publishers, 50 percent of something is often better than 100 percent of nothing.

The only reason we’re mentioning is that they’ve just relaunched their website and it gives a much clearer vision of what President Rudd Davis and crew have been building for the past five years.

“BNQT Media Group has been very fortunate that an exceptional amount of our business has been generated from positive word of mouth,” explains Rudd Davis, president of BNQT Media Group. “But we’ve grown so rapidly that it was necessary to give our current and prospective clients an online resource to get up-to-date information on our services, capabilities and continued expansion.”

Check it out.

Beverly Skates Puts Hot Girls On Skateboards

by The Editors on December 31, 2009

Beverlyhills-1

Here’s a rad idea: Hot girls as skateboard graphics. Beverly Skates is apparently back (not really sure what their story was last time around) and they’re ready to rock:

Located in Beverly Hills California our small skateboard company strives for perfection. We try to uphold the high standards of our community, at the same time leave an open invitation for you to be a part of it. Beverly Skates was founded upon principals that put our heart and soul into our product as much as you the skater have chosen to put your heart and soul into skateboarding.

“You the skater?” This should fit in nicely at The Crossroads.

DC’s Gymkhana 2 Is Ad Age’s # 4 Viral Video

by The Editors on December 30, 2009

Adage.com announced their top ten viral videos of 2009 and the Mad Media produced Gymkhana Two featuring Ken Block behind the wheel placed number four on their list ahead of a Wieden & Kennedy spot for Nike.

Among the lessons from this list? Viral video is not solely the domain of big-budget brands. While Microsoft was the only marketer to have a pair of spots in this list, Air New Zealand and DC Shoes were right up there as well.

Not bad for a couple cameras and a couple empty loading docks.

Happy Action Sports Furlough Week

by The Editors on December 28, 2009

The week between Christmas and New Year’s has always been a slow one in action sports. But this year it’s even slower thanks to forced non-paid vacations. We know employees of Oakley, DC, Podium, and Spy are all getting some “time off” this week. No, no, no. It’s not a pay cut, for some it’s an unpaid holiday for others just a forced vacation.

Have you been asked to take this week off? If you have, please tell us about it in the comments.

Happy Furlough!

Intrawest Misses $524 Million Loan Payment

by The Editors on December 28, 2009

IntrawestAccording to a story in The Globe And Mail Intrawest missed a $524 million payment to lenders due on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 and are currently in “continuing negotiations with the lenders.”

“Intrawest continues to be in active dialogue with our lenders regarding refinancing a term loan,” chief executive officer Bill Jensen said in a statement. . . Mr. Jensen said Intrawest’s customers at its resorts and property developments as well as Olympic organizers shouldn’t expect any changes, regardless of the negotiations on the loan payment and restructuring. . . “It is business as usual for Intrawest and we are providing our customers and homeowners with the memorable experiences that they have come to expect when they visit our resorts, and will continue to do so regardless of the outcome of these discussions,” he said.

Well, let’s hope it’s not exactly business as usual.

Intrawest Owes $524 Million Today

by The Editors on December 23, 2009

IntrawestDecember 23, 2009 is a big day for Whistler-Blackcomb Resort owning Intrawest ULC and its parent Fortress Investment Group LLC. A reported $524 million payment on a $1.4 billion loan is due, according to a story in Businessweek. And they may not be able to make the payment.

Intrawest, which owns venues being used at the 2010 Winter Olympics, may be pushed nearer to default if it fails to make the $524 million payment after getting a 60-day extension on Oct. 23, according to the people, who asked not to identified because the loan terms are private.

But not to worry, Dave Cobb, deputy chief executive officer for the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games says everything is fine. “Our venues are finished, preparations are nearly complete and we look forward to welcoming the world to Vancouver.”

Maybe Intrawest owner Fortress Investment Group LLC should just put tip jars all around during the Olympics and ask visitors to pitch in. That might help.

Quiks Logo09Fiscal 2009 wasn’t exactly a good one for Quiksilver. The company lost $73 million, but that hasn’t stopped the top executives at the company from getting raises for 2010, according to a story on the OC Retail Blog. Looks like Bob McKnight is a million dollar base salary man again.

Here’s how it looks for next year vs this year (according to an 8-K filing:

Robert B. McKnight, Jr., 2010 $ 1,000,000
Chief Executive Officer and President 2009 $ 903,000
