The Big Waves Paige Alms Rides

by The Editors on June 9, 2016

Don’t miss your chance to catch The Wave I Ride on the big screen, and meet the inspiring women behind the film, when director Devyn Bisson and female big wave pioneer (and star of the documentary) Paige Alms head “Up The Coast” to screen the film in San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Cruz and Portland from June 10 to June 22, 2016.

“We’ve struggled to ever get any support from the surf industry, and it’s always been pretty defeating, but when Paige and I go into a screening, whether it’s San Diego or London, the response is insane,” says Bisson. “People literally come up to us and thank us for making this film, and that’s when I finally get to remind myself that it was all worth it. It was so necessary. We needed this film. Our audience needed it, not the industry.”

Door times vary, but all showings will begin at 7:30 pm with a Q&A with Paige and Devyn immediately following. The tour kicks off tomorrow night (June 10, 2016) at the World Famous La Paloma Theatre, in Encinitas, California. For advance tickets click here. Bend, Oregon River Surfing With Mr. Pipeline

by The Editors on April 21, 2016

As if Southern California needed one more reason to sell off, pack up, and move to Central Oregon, the city of Bend, (or as we call it “Encinitas Norte”) now has a working, surfable wave in their new Deschutes River Park. Gerry Lopez, Josh Dirksen, GoPro Jaymo, and Kea Eubank were putting a few good lines down last week, but just think how long that line is going to get in the middle of July.

Great White Gets Air In SoCal

by The Editors on April 21, 2016

What is cooler than recording surfing on a GoPro using your “3d printed mouth mount”? Well, for SoCal surfer Drew Palumbo it’s catching footage of a great white shark blasting into the air just off Sunset Beach, California on April 18, 2016.

I was out surfing with my friend Ben Slaybeck. After taking some drone footage of him, I put my GoPro onto my 3d printed mouthmount and went out to catch some waves for myself. Shortly after, I paddled out toward a wave, pressed record, and caught a great white shark breaching from about a 100ft away or so.

They are out there and now we know for sure. We also know how grunty it sounds when you surf with a camera in your mouth. Thanks, Drew!

Channel Islands Builds In GPS Tracking

by The Editors on November 17, 2015

Trace CI photoTrace, makers of a small GPS and accelerometer data recorder, has teamed up with Channel Islands Surfboards to test various attributes of their surfboard designs.

Using Trace, Channel Islands will study everything from new materials, surfboard outlines, rockers and a lot more by measuring acceleration, turns, cutbacks, speed, distance traveled, time in water, time paddling.

The Trace tracker uses built in GPS and a 3-axis accelerometer to record performance metrics like distance traveled, speed, and g-forces exerted on a surfboard by a surfer. With its companion smartphone app Trace data can be viewed, analyzed, compared with others, and saved for future reference.

Now, thanks to a deal Channel Islands, the Trace is being build into select surfboards.

“Using Trace with Channel Islands to help futher push board design, and having Traces come embedded in CI boards is a dream come true. There’s no company more dedicated to performance and pushing the envelope in surfing, and it’s a perfect fit for Trace, “ says David Lokshin, Co-Founder and CEO of Trace.

The first CI boards to come with Trace compatibility built in will be the Jordy Smith models. For the official word from Trace, please follow the jump.

Aeon Smooths Out Rough Action Cams

by The Editors on September 29, 2015

We’ve seen a lot of gimbal designs that looked great and then never really materialized. This Aeon unit looks like it could help smooth out even the roughest hand held action cam footage, so we hope they actually produce them for the public. Developers are calling it the. . .

. . . world’s most ergonomic and lightweight filmmaking tool for creating buttery smooth, cinematic GoPro® videos. We’re putting an end to boring videos with a robotic handheld stabilizer that keeps your camera steady so you may run, jump and move about freely and still get a perfectly stable shot every time.

Apparently, Bucky Lasek, Andy Mac, PLG, Elliot Sloan, and Kelvin Hoefler have tested it out. If you’d like to get one early click the link for the Aeon’s Indiegogo campaign.

by The Editors on May 19, 2015

Lutzka Gopole

These are days of miracles and selfies. . . the way the camera follows us in slo-mo it’s no wonder we all need to get the shot from a better angle. Greg Lutzka knows this better than most and that’s likely why he has just signed with GoPro camera accessory leader GoPole.

Lutzka will be joining some of the world’s top action sports athletes including surfer Jamie O’Brien, wakeboarder Josh Palma and snowboarder Tim Humphreys to help promote and support action footage captured utilizing GoPole products. Skateboarding is an essential part of GoPole’s mission to push the progression and diversity within action sports and adding Lutzka, who has a reputation of being one of the hardest working skateboarders in the industry, will only solidify their efforts.
