686’s 19th Annual Black & White Holiday Gig

by The Editors on December 5, 2011

Nothing makes holiday revelers feel older than knowing they’re going to a party that’s been going on longer than most snowboarders have been alive. On the other hand, the 19th Annual Black & White Holiday Gig shows just how deeply 686’s snow roots go.

A crowd of nicely dressed invited guests cued up in front of Hermosa Beach, California’s Club 705 at 8:30 PM Friday, December 2, 2011 waiting to be let in to the 19th Annual 686 Black & White Holiday Gig. On the curb, and drawing a crowd from randoms was the new 686 x Scion Ultimate snow car.

Once inside it was classic 686 black and white: photo booths, caricature artists, a taco guy, Peligroso shots, a DJ, and an open bar. 686’s Mike West ran the party all night long making sure everyone had exactly what they needed (and then some). Happy Holidays.

Follow the jump for more photos from the night. [click to continue…]

686 x Scion Ultimate Collab Snow Car

by The Editors on November 14, 2011

686 and Scion (boxy car maker) have teamed up with Skullcandy, New Balance, Go Pro, Union Bindings, Dragon Alliance, BOA Technology, Bern Helmets, Vestal Watches, Blind Skateboards, and Recco Avalanche Rescue System (among others) to design a car that will celebrate 686’s 20th anniversary year.

“The 686 Scion Numeric is a dream come true,” says Michael Akira West, president and creative director at 686. “What better way to celebrate our twentieth anniversary by doing something that’s never been done before? Every part of this build has a story and a separate product that it was inspired from. I’m psyched we were able to show it to the world, our way.”

The car will reportedly sport New Balance tires, a Dragon Goggle windshield and a Bern hemet for a roof. Guess we’ll have to see it before we make any comments. The car will debut at the SIA Show on January 26, 2011. So we guess you’ll have to wait until then to see it live and in person.

Follow the jump for all the details and many more detail photos. [click to continue…]

Gatwick Confiscates Writer’s 686 Tool Belt

by The Editors on October 25, 2011

686-ToolbeltWhen science fiction writer (and Boing Boing blogger) Cory Doctorow was flying through London’s Gatwick Airport yesterday, he lost his favorite 686 belt when security personal decided that the belt was technically a “restricted item.”

The guard who confiscated it had this explanation for why the belt buckle was being confiscated here when all the other UK airports I’d flown out of it with had let me keep it: “I stick to what they’ve told me” . . At that point, a supervisor, Pete Sutherland, the security leader for Gatwick North, gave me a copy of Dangerous and restricted items: what you cannot take on board a flight, which lists, under “work tools,” “screwdrivers.”

Doctorow says that in the three years he had the belt he’s used the screwdrivers dozens of times: “always in some moment of traveller’s extremes, when something really important was really broken. They’ve been figurative lifesavers, and I think if I had them long enough, they’d have been literal ones.”

Sounds like we’re going have to get him another one.

686 Climbs Back Into The Internet Saddle

by The Editors on March 3, 2011

Spring Banner 3 11

After a winter of “technical issues” the 686 website is back up to full “on” status with their new 2011 Spring Collection. Here’s what they have to say about it:

We do apologize greatly for our internet absence the last few weeks. If we told you what happened, you wouldn’t believe us, so we’re just going to keep it quiet and tell you that the offending parties responsible for the collapse of the 686.com empire have been dealt with appropriately. We made them take a few runs nude during the last big storm and now all is right in the world.

Having experienced similar issues (June 2010) we feel for them and are glad the’re back.
