RIP: Legendary Surfer/Inventor Mike Doyle

by The Editors on April 30, 2019

Mike Doyle, waterman, surfer, inventor, artist, and shaper who had suffered from ALS died Tuesday April 30, 2019 in his sleep at home in San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico, according to a story in the Orange County Register. He was 78.

“To sum up Doyle in some kind of words, here’s a really fabulous guy, a real icon and definitely a champion,” Tom Morey said. “I don’t know how many surf contests he’s won, but quite a few. And how many giant waves he’s ridden, but a lot. And how many innovations he’s had in the surfing world … revolutionizing, with his pals, the soft board is his deal and surf wax is a big deal.”

He also played a large roll in the development of the monoski, which for many was the precursor to snowboarding. The surf and snow world would not be the same without Mike Doyle. He will be missed. Our thoughts are with his friends and family, especially his wife Anne.

Jamie Salter Buying Sports Illustrated?

by The Editors on April 30, 2019

In the continuing saga of strange zombie brand shenanigans, it is being reported that Authentic Brands, the company that just purchased Volcom is very seriously considering purchasing Sports Illustrated, the fading print magazine known most widely for it’s annual bikini issue, for $110 million, according to a story on Pitchbook.com.

If Authentic Brands ultimately wins the auction, it would keep SI’s print product alive for at least another two years, per retail-focused website WWD. But its bigger play would be licensing SI’s brand, which could reportedly include launching kids’ sports camps and injury rehab clinics. That sort of cross promotion is what Authentic Brands has specialized in while building consumer brands for celebrities such as retired NBA star Shaquille O’Neil and ex-pro golfer Greg Norman. Here’s to hoping this strategy could produce a viable business model to preserve SI’s journalistic aspirations.

ABG has enough women’s wear brands to pack that bikini issue, and when you look at print advertising costs, it may be cheaper to just buy the magazine. We’ve said it as a joke before, but it’s looking more and more like Jamie Salter really will own everything soon.

Snowboarder Dies Riding Pikes Peak

by The Editors on April 30, 2019

Twenty-four-year-old snowboarder Tucker Shivers died Wednesday, April 24, 2019 while snowboarding on Colorado’s Pikes Peak, according to a story in the Colorado Springs Gazette.

The 24-year-old Colorado Springs man died living out his dream Wednesday after falling while snowboarding above Glen Cove on the eastern face of the mountain, said Patrick Kerscher, El Paso County Search and Rescue operations director. He was snowboarding in a couloir east of Little Italy, Kerscher said. “He had a helmet on, and the helmet was broken, so we do suspect there was head injury,” Kerscher said.

Our thoughts are with Shivers family and friends. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with expenses.

Surfer Magazine Parent Sells National Enquirer

by The Editors on April 18, 2019

American Media LLC, the company that purchased a gutted Adventure Sports Network in January 2019 has apparently sold the National Enquirer (and a couple other tabloids) to Hudson Media. for $100 million, according to a story on WWD.

James Cohen, part of the family that founded Hudson News Distributors, is buying the U.S. and U.K versions of the gossip magazine from David Pecker’s American Media LLC (recently renamed from American Media Inc.), which acquired the title 20 years ago. The $100 million deal also includes two other tabloids, Globe and National Examiner. . . Pecker — whose friendship with President Donald Trump and the use of the Enquirer’s coverage to aid Trump’s candidacy and perhaps even his personal vendettas has come under intense scrutinyover the last year — wrote in a statement that the group of magazines actually pull in $30 million in profit annually.

Not sure what this really means other than Snowboarder, Skateboarding, and Surfer Magazine are no longer siblings of the politically embroiled gossip rags and AMI is a little less in debt — only $355 million now. Ouch.

Burton Makes The Best Travel Bags

by The Editors on April 17, 2019

We don’t have much more to say about it than that (but watch us). In the world of travel bags (and we mean the world) no one makes better bags than Burton. In fact, we believe that of all the things Burton designs and has manufactured nothing comes close to their luggage. Not their snowboards, boots, goggles, helmets, wovens, outerwear, nothing. In our opinion Burton’s bags stand above any other luggage manufacturer in the world. If you don’t trust us, trust Coachella 2019 performers RÜFÜS DU SOL. They travel all the time and what bags do they prefer? Burton. To check out Burton’s complete line of bags, click the link.

Superhero Wields Wind Powers At Skatepark

by The Editors on April 11, 2019

The above footage from the security camera at the Suisun Rotary skatepark in Fairfield, California purports to show a common dust devil, but who are they kidding. This is rare footage of a superhero wielding his wind powers to destroy. As skaters roll away, notice how he puts his arms out, and begins to spin pulling in a raging tornado of power strong enough to rip the roof off the restroom? When he walks away the wind stops. Hopefully, he can get these powers under control and use them for good in the future. . . and maybe work his magic somewhere else.
