Deuce: The Swingbo Redux

by The Editors on February 17, 2009

5157 1 MdWe still don’t understand why designers want to take a perfectly simple sliding device and make it more complicated.

Take Sunnyvale, California’s Todd Belt for example. As a skier he wanted to snowboard, but he thought snowboards scraped too much of the good snow off the mountain, according to a story on Onthesnow.com. So he built an articulated platform that allowed him to ski standing sideways.

Because of its unique design, you ride the Deuce like a snowboard but enjoy all of the benefits of two shaped skis. The skis flex and carve like short shaped skis and can accommodate a 47 degree inclination into the turn. Unlike a traditional snowboard that limits the rider to carving on one long edge, the Deuce lets the rider crank out quicker, more responsive turns on two sets of edges.

Unique design? Wonder if anyone has had more success than the guys on the BomberOnline forum in explaining to Todd that this idea was pretty bad the first time it came around in the 80s when it was called the Swingbo.

Wall of shame material…”scrape all the snow off the trail”…he should stick to his rollerblades…. whoops I mean skis! The editors are too nice… this is an absolutely dumb idea!

The only thing this guy got wrong, is how arrogant and near
sighted snowboarders can be (naming the thing “The Deuce” probably
wasn’t to savvy either). This device is perfect for adaptive sit
skiing and has potential snowskate applications. This guy got so
much hate from people I think he lost motivation. I support people
who come up with new ideas, that’s the only way things get better.
I live in a mountain town and frankly, snowboarders can be the most
self conscious image aware wankers of any sport. You just can’t
take em seriously compared to skateboarders or any other sport that
requires more humility cuz it’s more difficult.

I agree with Jason this could have some real possibility people are so closed minded, why do we snowboard, because winterstick dared tto try something different, they got all l kinds of hate before being allowed on the mountain. Why add pres and metal edges, let’s just stop evolving all together. Let’s see when I was a kid, no cell phones, no computers, yep no internet, not that long ago. So giving a skier crap for wanting to snowboard, good way to grow our sport. Hey I got an idea who about buy one ride it for a season then make up your mind. Kudos for being a followe and never evolving, surprised thou walk upright.
