Yesterday, (August 28, 2012) a 50-year-old surfer riding waves created by Hurricane Isaac drowned after getting caught in a rip current near Packery Channel in Corpus Christi, Texas, according to a story in KIIItv.com.
Nearby surfers were able to pull him to shore and start CPR. Paramedics got to the scene minutes later. Unfortunately, the man did later die at the hospital. . . “There is a very strong current out there right now,” said Timothy Netek with the Corpus Christi Fire Department. “As you can tell, even the surfers are taking it very cautiously. Anybody without a lot of experience in this water should avoid it at this time.”
Our thoughts are with the surfer’s family and friends.

Sad to hear that a guy died, but WTF – those waves looked maybe knee high at most?
Texas…
5-6 ft at 13 sec swell hit at 6p that evening, likely the surf footage was filmed before or after the major swell hit. Currents were ripping like crazy even before and after the swell hit though. A lot of inexperienced folks were out as with just about every storm swell we get, regardless of this guys experience, prayers and sadness for his family and him.
not big waves, rather big exaggerations… texas in a nut shell.
He was a good man – enjoyed the out of doors – he will be missed by many!! @NigHeist, ever heard of “rip current”, it can take you out less than knee high water!!! To anyone who surfs, be careful if you choose to surf in the wake of a storm!!
@sc, and sorry for your loss. i can only imagine how tough it must me. my thoughts go out to you all.
He was a wonderful man. He had nearly 30 years experience surfing and anytime there was a storm brewing in the Gulf he was out there trying to catch the waves. God Bless him.
