Snurfer inventor Sherman Poppen will be honored by The Community Foundation for Muskegon County on June 7, 2012 when they will unveil the “Turning Point” sculpture at 447 W. Western, according to a story on MLive.
“The chamber hall of fame recognizes business excellence, innovation and inventions that have made lasting contributions to industry and the community,” Larsen said. “Clearly, Mr. Poppen’s invention changed the course of history in winter sports. This recognition is long overdue. . . “It is our hope that the sculpture and the award will inspire others to see Muskegon’s role in winter sports development and see the Muskegon Lakeshore as a winter tourism destination,” Larsen said.
The sculpture, by artist Jason Dreweck features a Snurfer rider at the top of a turn with a modern snowboarder at the bottom. Nice to see the home hometown honoring Mr. Poppen.
