Thanks to a crazy travel schedule Tony Hawk missed several of the biggest Bones Brigade: An Autobiography movie events, so to make up for that Hawk invited a couple hundred people (including the original Bones Brigade) to attend a special private showing of the film at the world famous La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas, California on Saturday, March 10, 2012.

Before the film began Hawk welcomed all the guests to the showing. “It’s a great honor to be here with all our friends and family and obviously industry people here in Southern California,” Hawk said. “So without further ado here is Bones Brigade: An autobiography. Enjoy.”

For the next hour and a half (we have no idea how long the movie was because we were entranced the entire time) the audience sat, eyes set straight ahead as Stacy Peralta, George Powell, the Bones Brigade and their contemporaries told the story of how a group of amazingly talented skaters became one of the most iconographic skateboarding crews of all time.

Without spoiling too much, we’ll just say that some of the best lines in the movie come from Duane Peters and photographer Glen E. Friedman and they were not exactly positive comments. The other film standout is the genius of Rodney Mullen who finally is given the chance to let everyone into his deeply complex mind.

Watching the film knowing all the guys were in the theater (including musician/skateboarder Ben Harper) was crazy. At one point Lance Mountain got up and left his seat near the back of the theater and we wondered what was up. Then moments later we saw Mountain breakdown during a particularly emotional segment and it all made sense. We were watching a movie while the skaters were re-watching their youth play out on screen. That’s a mind jacker that made us glad to we were just spectators.

The Bones Brigade: An Autobiography is a mesmerizing documentary film that all skateboarders must see. Yes, the Bones Brigade was a marketing construct created entirely by Stacy Peralta and Craig Stecyk to help Powell Peralta sell more skateboards, but that thought didn’t once enter our minds while we were watching the film because it is that well done and what the guys have to say about life, skateboarding, and their pasts is that compelling.
