Louie Vito’s New Reality Edit Series

by The Editors on January 18, 2012

We’ve been diving into all the new Youtube “channel” content lately to see what it’s all about. (Want to read more about Youtube’s somewhat skewed logic check out John Seabrook’s story Streaming Dreams in The New Yorker).

Livin’ Louie Vito is just one of the shows Red Bull is populating their channel with that, not surprisingly, promotes an energy drink sponsored athlete. If you hadn’t noticed yet, self-serving media is the new media.

So for a sport that considers itself to be original, it’s kind of ironic that they just copied the played out MTV cookie cutter Cribs format.

But 7k views already. I guess it works.

Funny to watch one of these for Surf, Moto, Snow and Skate. All the same.

I was hoping that the point of channels was to give producers the start up money they needed to produce high quality content, then build an audience and build something self-sustaining. With some back of the envelop math, I’d estimate it cost FUEL about $30k/episode in production costs. With a million dollars in start up capital it would seem like you have the ability to produce a lot of high quality content. Sadly, what is coming out of these channels is more YouTube-caliber sponsored crap. Seems like a missed opportunity to me.

So far, I’m seeing pretty limited amounts of content that I’d watch on a regular basis via these youtube deals.

So, even with a million dollars going towards each channel, you still have to put a bunch of annoying ads over the picture? That’s pretty week. Soul Doubt.
