Circe Wallace’s Action Agent Tendency

by The Editors on September 19, 2011

164McSweeney’s Internet Tendency skateboarding columnist Joel Rice interviewed Wasserman Media Group Senior Vice President Circe Wallace to get a better understanding the wild, independent world of corporate skateboarding, and as usual she makes it all sound perfectly logical — especially the “sexy” part:

The characters are attractive! They have chiseled features and they dress flamboyantly! And, like, they’re sexy and they’re good looking kids! I mean Dylan Rieder… It doesn’t get much sexier than that! It’s like a boy band but better because they are actually doing something manly and it’s really aggressive, super-expressive and athletically intense!

Okay. We get the Dylan thing, but when she starts talking about drinking “Lucky Stripes” with Jake Phelps and Julien Stranger at 14 we kind of lost our way. But you should read the whole thing anyway.

Please tell me that was one of those “I’ll send you some questions in an email and you answer back and I’ll insert witty banter-filled segues” interviews. Really? She chiseled “accoutrements” into the conversation, who speaks that way? Such a polarizing figure in our little world, but she brings it on herself. Any time you begin to co-opt other people’s memories and pass them on as your own, the haters will come-a-hollering. Little details like mixing up the name of the beer being thrown about with a bowling alley franchise tends to send red flags rifling up flag poles. Final thought: could it be that Rick Howard hates her because she’s an opportunistic bitch, not because she’s a real-life, “down” skater chick?

It seems that every time a smart, attractive women becomes successful in a male dominated business there are men who feel threatened. Often the best way to know who these men are is by their compulsive use of the word “bitch”.

Circe has made ALOT out of nothing and deserves all the credit that she gets! Mr Nice Guy nailed it…when you’re on top you will always have haters!

Your Mom September 20, 2011 at 2:41 pm

How on Earth could you accuse someone of co-opting a memory from a night that happened 25 years ago that you weren’t a part of? Do you have a time machine? Or are you relying on your brilliant deductive powers that so cleverly lead you to believe that a woman smart enough to use the word accoutrement in a casual sentence would do something as dumb as confuse the name of a beer with a bowling alley.

A Lucky Stripe is a Red Stripe with a shot of whiskey in it, you fucking dillhole.

You do realize that girls were actually skateboarding back then, right? Maybe you should get out of SoCal more.

fuck off Joe Shred September 20, 2011 at 4:54 pm

Hey Joe Shred,
It is pretty awesome for a man to anonymously pick on a woman online. It’s almost as awesome as slapping her in the back of the head at a grocery store and then running away. It’s almost as awesome as pushing her down some stairs when her arms are full of groceries.
Stay rad, big man!

Wow, such a lot of virulent resentment of a someone who has worked hard and made something of herself. I thought this kind of woman bashing was a thing of past, but looks like that kind of insecurity and meaness just goes one and on. From who watched her from the very beginning, you have no idea what it takes, and you have no idea what she really took on, and what she had really done for the industry, for her own life and home and family…things which may elude you.

Old Eugene Guy September 20, 2011 at 5:41 pm

I was in Eugene when Circe tried to enter a skateboarding competition as a pre-teen one Saturday. She was told that girls weren’t allowed. She was principled then as she is now. She was feisty then as she is now. They had to let her compete.

I’ve seen Circe in varied circumstances in many environments since those days. I know from direct observation that she insists on fairness and wants to get along with people. Even those who say mean things about her.

Personally, I would like to thank Joe Shred for his idiotic & near-sighted post. It gives all of us the opportunity to look back at what this amazing woman has accomplished. I too, over the past 20 years, have had the pleasure of witnessing Circe make a whole lot of something out of nothing, scrapping her way to the top….during most of this time raising my own daughter. I cannot wait to show this entire thread to my teenager, and show her that no matter what comes your way- keep going, keep trying, keep learning, and keep kicking ass and don’t let the haters bring you down. Circe will always have more balls than Joe Shred can ever hope to have, which surely is why you chose to post such stupid comments- you’re a little man who is jealous of Circe’s success. So thank you for this amazing learning opportunity for my kids. Oh, and go fuck yourself. Have a nice day.

I agree with joe shred and I agree with all the other responses.
Give Circe props for marketing herself out there because there was
no way in hell her snowboarding alone was going to get her anywhere.
Circe Wallace is a social climber. SHe is done with all of you and she is moving up in the world. Hate her or love her -you are all now just DUST IN THE WIND!!

Seems like she helps young people get lots of money from big corps. Stick it to the Man, or climb inside and sit next to the Man in his luxury vehicle. You choose. She’s helping re-distribute wealth, playing by the established rules. What’s the problem?
