Injured California Surfer Sues Channel Islands

by The Editors on August 26, 2011

Channel IslandTom Gregg, a California surfer who suffered a “deep gash” on his right leg while surfing in France in 2009 filed suit in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Wednesday, August 24, 2011, against Channel Islands Surfboards claiming:

“The surfboard, fins and their component parts were unsafe for their intended use. . . Gregg’s attorney, Jeffrey Karpel, said the fins are so sharp some surfers cover them with protective sleeves. Gregg was not aware of that before the injury, Karpel said.

According to the story Channel Island’s GM Scott Anderson says this is the first liability claim that he has heard of. While this kind of injury is no surprise to surfers or companies like SurfCo Hawaii (makers of Pro Teck fins), it does seem a little like Gregg is blaming his equipment. It will be interesting to see how Burton lawyers proceed with this one.

This Guy Tom Gregg needs to be duck-taped nude to a pole and tortured with more sharp fins and some broken surfboard fiberglass….i have surfed my whole life and endured stitches, bruises, sprains, smashed ball sacks and not to mention all my friends who have had broken bones stitches etc….Did we sue any one?? hell no!!!!! we keep surfing because we are men. give me this kooks phone number.

And then we wonder why Caltrans bulldozes the Emeryville skatespot citing liability issues!
This is BullShit… next thing that’ll happen is that surfboards, skateboards etc will only be sold with a signed waiver releasing anyone from any responsibility, and the prices will quadruple.
Take responsibility people. Come On!

@ginger…skateboards already are. Personal responsibility flew out the window in the 80’s when every ninny of a parent that didn’t pay attention, decided their kid could do no wrong and people started buying into it. I love my kids but if they snag their leg jumping fences with me I’m not suing the property owner or the fence company…

ooh this makes me red hot mad! its frivolous lawsuits like this that are going to bring legislation that makes it difficult for americans with LEGITIMATE suits to sue! U mean this dillhole didnt know you could get cut by your surfboards fins!!!! its a BOARDSPORT its AT YOUR OWN RISK. Hope i catch this guy on Pensacola Beach so I can give him something to sue about.
