Kevin Jones Looks Back While Going Forward

by The Editors on December 10, 2010

Kevin Jones Ak 1Kevin Jones has always been one of our favorite snowboarders. While we may have been rough on him in the past (when we couldn’t figure why he was giving up so much) it’s good to see that, aside from mucking things up on Buoloco, he’s back on his snowboard as well.

Snowboard Magazine has a great story up on their site titled The Life Between My Ears. Here’s how it starts out:

“Maybe I just love it too much,” Kevin Jones says with more than a hint of nostalgia. “But I feel like I owe it to the snowboarding community to tell it how it is. I owe it to my friends now and gone. I owe it to myself to say what I really think.”

The story (with Jeff Curley photos) pretty much answers every questions we’ve had about why Kevin left snowboarding, where he went, and why he’s back. And it’s all good.

Wait, so, he was extremely successful, then blew all his money on partying too hard, billabong stuck with him through it all and he wants sponsors to treat their retired riders better? If you ask me, Billabong should stop paying for their athletes drinks. It seems to come back and bite them in the ass.

I thought the article was phenomenal. Kevin makes a ton of good points about our sport and the state of the industry. Yeah, he’s made some mistakes in his life, who hasn’t? At least he’s owning up to them and moving on. The guy is a legend. There is no doubt about it.

I agree with pbourdon, I thought the interview was honest and forthcoming.

Marc, you have to remember KJ was essentially a kid when his career was at its highest. If companies and contests were rewarding you with hundreds of k’s, would you be as disciplined as you (come off as being) are now? Most likely, you would not be-you’d be traveling the world having a damn fine time-while taking care of your friends-instead of contributing to your IRA, Roth and 401k.

Personally, I am stoked to see the return of KJ. Now, if Northwave would just bring his signature boot back.
