Pappas Family Stops Doco Production

by The Editors on October 18, 2011

Pappas Al1-200X0Deceased pro skateboarder Ben Pappas’ family used Facebook to help stop a planned documentary on the skater’s troubled life and death, according to a story in The Age.

The documentary, Gnarly: The Ben Pappas Story, being filmed by Mike Hill from Moonshine Movies, had been criticized as exploitative. . . [Hill] said it had been pulled as soon as he was made aware of the family’s concerns. A spokeswoman for Louise Asher, Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business, said Film Victoria had withdrawn funding after Moonshine decided to make significant changes to the documentary.

According to the story Pappas’ body “was found in the Yarra River near Victoria Harbour in Docklands eight days after his ex-girlfriend Lynette Phillips’s battered body was discovered at Dights Falls in Abbotsford on March 3, 2007.” Not sure anyone needs to live through that all over again.

Rip Curl Pro Protugal Gets Super Toobie

by The Editors on October 17, 2011

Florencescholtz

ASP Dream Tour surfers worked overtime today as the Rip Curl Pro Portugal barreled through 21 heats of surfing today (October 17, 2011). The only heat that could be called upsets of the day were when John John Florence got by Ace Buchan in Round 2 Heat 6, when Fred Patacchia took out Jordy Smith 15.06 to 14.90 in Round 3 Heat 7 and finally when Bede Durbidge landed the perfect 10 barrel to send Mick Fanning home in Round 3 Heat 8.

Florence was having nothing but fun in the heaving barrels of Supertubos. “It’s unreal out there this morning,” Florence said. “It reminds me a lot of Backdoor and Pipe but with a sandy bottom. I was having so much fun. I just kept taking off on everything that came through.”

The contest will likely continue tomorrow morning with the last four heads of Round 3 where John John Florence will face Owen Wright in Heat 12. Follow the jump for the official word from the ASP. [click to continue…]

Apparently some girls got in a fight over a skateboard at a shop called Clout Malibu. The solution to that fight? A jello wrestling match. No Shame, no sorry.

High Fructose Corn Sweetener Finals Las Vegas

by The Editors on October 17, 2011

Street Podium 640-1

Seems most of the SoCal action industry made the pilgrimage to Las Vegas the weekend of October 14-16, 2011 for the Caffeinated High Fructose Corn Sweetener Finals presented by Go Kill Elephants Daddy. We didn’t watch one lick of the contest so we’re not going to pretend to know what went down, but from the looks of the results there were no real surprises.

PLG took the vert event and the 2011 tour title, while Ryan Decenzo did the same in street. Follow the jump for the full results. [click to continue…]

Surfing Keeps Perry Farrell Grounded

by The Editors on October 17, 2011

16E.Jane3.C.Ta--300X300At 52 Perry Farrell has a new Jane’s Addiction album coming out. It’s the band’s fourth in 23 years, according to a story in the New York Post. But more than the music people wonder how Perry stays so young, while living the rock n’ roll lifestyle. Here is is secret:

Surfing, being in the water. The ocean is very powerful and big, but it’s very serene at the same time. It’s a crazy dichotomy. The ocean grounds me. The instant I get up in the morning, I’m battling children, getting them ready for school. Then I start my day and I have lots of business I attend to, and at night I’m performing. The only time I’m happily doing nothing is when I’m in the water.

Only a surfer knows the feeling. . .

Forum’s The Peter Line Softgoods

by The Editors on October 17, 2011

Thepeterline

Forum Snowboards is happy to announce the exclusive Peter Line softgoods collection called The Peter Line featuring a fisherman-style beaning, a kitty titty t-shirt, and a jacket (surprisingly not called a “jack-it”).

“My line of clothes was pretty much inspired by punk rock, boobs and kittens. It’s easy to see this in the PL jacket, but you probably don’t know that the beanie I designed doubles as boob warmers and can be used as an old fashion slingshot for kittens, a handheld cat-a-pult if you will.”

The Peter Line is available in shops everywhere.

Rip Curl Pro Portugal Touches Off

by The Editors on October 16, 2011

Medinwatcest

It may have taken until 1:15 PM local time, but the Rip Curl Pro Portugal finally got underway at Supertubos. Daniel Ross and Chris Davidson joined the favorites by winning in Round 1 forcing Taj Burrow and Jordy Smith to surf tomorrow in the rising swell. Joel Parkinson and Gabriel Madina tied for the day’s high score of 17.87.

“The conditions improved so much in the span of one heat when compared to the warm-up just before,” Parkinson said. “It was great and everyone was getting barrels and scores. I guess it just shows how quickly things can change out there.”
