According to a little pre-show recon from Ashbury’s Lance Michael Hakker, Salomon Snowboards was been nice enough to equip their booth with a mini ramp. It looks perfect. We’re guessing this thing is going to get pretty crowded over the next few days.

According to a report from Deutsche Bank Australia, Billabong could be a prime target for a takeover, according to a story in The Australian.
Retail analyst Alexi Baker-McLennan said in a note to clients: “We think Billabong could be an attractive LBO (leveraged buyout) target. . . “The company is trading 30 per cent below 12-month highs, highlighting that the stock could be taken out below this level with a reasonable premium. . . “An LBO of Billabong would not be for the faint-hearted. Billabong is midway through integrating a number of acquisitions, it is rolling out retail stores requiring significant further investment, it remains heavily exposed to currency and the category is undergoing significant structural change.
What a nice way to help bump up a stock price. Analysts are good that way.

The East Coast is finally getting an ASP World Tour stop as Quiksilver puts up a $1 million purse for The Quiksilver Pro New York September 4-15, 2011. It will be the sixth stop on the 2011 tour (click here for full schedule).
“We are beyond excited to host the biggest pro surf event in the world on Long Island this September,” said Bob McKnight, CEO of Quiksilver. “There has always been a huge contingent of dedicated surfers and surf enthusiasts on the East Coast and they will now get a chance to watch the world’s best surfers in Long Beach. After seeing Mark McMorris’ performance at the O’Neill Evolution slope air we knew it would only be a matter of time before things began falling into place for the Canadian.
Mark paid his first visit to Burton’s home base in Vermont last week to check out HQ and meet product managers. After his visit, Mark had this to say, “I’m really stoked to be riding the best products with the most progressive team in the business,” said Mark. “Since I got on the program, I’ve already been working with such great people that all share a strong love for snowboarding, and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”

Tom Carroll has signed on to promote a new Quiksilver Edition of the Olympus TG-610 for Australia. Like Mr. Carroll, the 14 megapixel camera is waterproof, shockproof, snowproof, dustproof, and shoots in 3-D. We’re not sure if Tom features one-touch HD, or not. Anyone?

Looks like Geoff Rowley has signed up for another year overseeing the design of Maloof Money Cup courses (which have grown to include an event in South Africa).
Rowley will lead the design team of pro skateboarders and experts alongside Joe Ciaglia from California Skateparks, whose company has built all four Maloof Money Cup courses since its beginning in 2008. . . “I really respect the Maloofs and what they’ve accomplished with this contest,” said Rowley. “Out of all the contests out there, the Maloof Money Cup is the only one that really delivers on giving the skaters and fans what they are looking for,” said Rowley.

A 16-year-old surfer, and former finalist in the South African Grommet Games in the U-16 Division Zama Ndamase (right) died after being hit by a Tiger Shark at Port St. Johns, South Africa’s Second Beach on Saturday, January 15, 2011, according to a story on IOL.co.za.
“We ran down there as soon as we saw it. After the shark had bit him he caught a wave and headed for shore, but he couldn’t stand on one leg and the wave faded on him. . . “He lost consciousness and some of the other surfers tried to rescue him before the lifeguards came. He was in the water a good 10 minutes before we got to him. . . “We checked for a pulse and all the vital signs, but he was already gone. The shark had bitten a big chunk off his right leg.”
This is the third shark attack death at Second Beach since March 2009.

The February issue of Outside Magazine features Slater in a story titled Kelly Slater’s Perfect 10, and GQ has him as one of 10 covers for their 25 Coolest Athletes of All Time issue. Add them to the list. . .

Two more snowboarders died in the last week in unrelated accidents resulting in head injuries. Rahsheka Keith (right), a 22-year old UC Santa Cruz theatre student from Oakland, California died after riding her snowboard (like a sled) into a lift tower at Lake Tahoe, California’s Granlibakken Resort, according to a story in the Sierra Sun.
The accident occurred when Keith used her snowboard as a sled, sitting upon the board with her feet unattached to the bindings, Ausnow said. At some point, Keith became turned around, facing uphill, with her back turned toward the bottom of the hill. She then crashed into a lift tower pole.
In Arizona, 22-year-old Branson Holm died from injuries sustained after landing on his head while “attempting to do a backflip on his snowboard,” on January 9, 2011 while riding near Flagstaff, Arizona, according to a story in the Mail Tribune.
Keith and Holm become the 12th and 13th snowboard deaths in North America since December 20, 2010. Our thoughts are with their families and friends.
