by The Editors on October 31, 2010

For those, like us, who are completely consumed with news of the battle between Kelly Slater and Jordy Smith for the 2010 ASP World Title here’s where we stand after the second day of the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico. Both Kelly and Jordy advanced on Saturday into round three and didn’t have to surf today (October 31, 2010). Tomorrow (if the contest runs) Kelly Slater will face local wildcard ripper Dylan Graves (who took out Ace Buchan today) in what may be one of the most important heats of the year. Following that, Jordy Smith faces Nike 6.0 Trestles champ Gabe Kling. Tough heats. If Jordy loses and Kelly wins it’s pretty much number 10 time.

Here’s how the rest of round three sorts out:

Tsunami Video From Macaroni Surf Resort

by The Editors on October 29, 2010

According to a story from the Associated Press, videographer Sebastian Carvallo was showing surf videos to other guests at Macaroni Surf Resort when the 7.7 earthquake hit. Two minutes later he heard a distant roar.

The Chilean surfer grabbed his computer and his camera, rounded up the other guests and rushed to the highest spot they could find: the third floor of the thatch-roofed beach resort. . . From that vantage point overlooking the lagoon, Carvallo and the others had a terrifying front-row seat Monday night as three towering waves of a tsunami struck, shaking the building so violently they thought it would collapse.

They are lucky to have survived. So many others did not.

Technical analysts and investors may interpret today’s trading activity as a sign that the shares will continue to head lower in the foreseeable future assuming the moving average has downward slope. . . The stock’s 52 week low is $14.7 and the high is $24.79. The technical momentum Relative Strength Index indicator shows oversold conditions.

Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico Mañana?

by The Editors on October 29, 2010

ASP world number two Jordy Smith isn’t letting a little ankle injury keep him out of the hunt for his first world title as the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico waiting period opens tomorrow. But he has a pretty big wall to climb to get around Kelly Slater. Here’s the logic Jordy is facing:

For Slater to clinch his historic 10th ASP Crown at the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico, the following scenarios must occur:
– If Slater finishes Equal 3rd or better, he clinches the 2010 ASP World Title.
– If Slater finishes Equal 5th or Equal 9th, Smith must win the event to send the ASP World Title Race to Hawaii.
– If Slater finishes Equal 13th or Equal 25th, Smith must finish Equal 3rd or better to send the ASP World Title Race to Hawaii.
– Essentially, if Smith fails to finish higher than Equal 5th, Slater claims the 2010 ASP World Title.
Jordy Smith (ZAF), 22, current ASP World No. 2, is the only surfer standing in the Floridian’s way, but the prodigious natural-footer is guarded when discussing his aspirations in Puerto Rico.

Talk about head trips and pressure. For the rest of the details and the round one draws follow the jump.

Great White Spotted In San Clemente

by The Editors on October 28, 2010

On Tuesday night (October 26, 2010) a group of surfers in the lineup at San Clemente, California’s Riviera Beach saw a small great white shark jump out of the water just outside the line up, according to a story in the Orange County Register.

About half of the 10 or so surfers in the lineup left the water, said Dave Schulte, a veteran surfer and former pro surf-contest judge who had just finished surfing at Riviera Beach when the shark, maybe 6 feet long, was sighted at about 6 p.m. Tuesday. . . Schulte was heading for his car when a young surfer came up to say a shark had just breeched. Schulte said he watched the water for 15 minutes “and all of a sudden it jumped again. We’re talking maybe 75 yards off the beach.”

We liked it better when the great whites stayed way, way off shore and kept their heads down.

Volcom To Pay $1 Special Dividend

by The Editors on October 28, 2010

Volcom-Stone-LogojpgIn among the other news reported today during Volcom’s third quarter results report was the announcement that the Board of Directors has approved a special $1 a share dividend for shareholders (and those holding unvested shares of restricted common stock).

The payout will be made on November 19, 2010 to stockholders of record on November 8, 2010. “The aggregate amount of payments to be made in connection with the special dividend will be approximately $24.4 million.”

This is the kind of stuff companies do just to jack with us. Sure, all the big shareholders (Wooly has 2.7 million or so) and the employees who have unvested shares will get a nice little payout. But here’s what we’re thinking: if we get a dollar a share for all the Volcom stock we own (which is, of course, zero). We could buy some shares on November 3 (the ex-dividend date is November 4), hold it until November 8 to qualify for the dividend, and then sell it back on Tuesday. If the share price goes up during the time, even better. The downside, as always, is if the share price goes down during that week then the dividend won’t even pay for itself. Oh, the way they toy with us.

Those interested in all the financial nitty gritty (things were up a bit over last year) from the rest of VeeCo’s announcement today can follow the jump.
