Yesterday, (September 9. 2010) it was announced that Metacafe had “acquired” action sports site Go211.com for what MetaCafe CEO Erick Hachenburg called an “equity transaction,” according to a post on All Things D by Peter Kafka.
So what does he get for his equity? In addition to the four million visitors that Action Sports’ Go211 gets a month, MetaCafe will also get a new chief revenue officer, in the form of former Action Sports CEO Sean Aruda.
Ignoring for a moment that Go211’s traffic numbers have always been highly suspect, it is interesting that Aruda finally found someone to rescue his site.
From almost the the minute Go211.com launched in early 2007 rumors began swirling that Aruda was already trying to flip the site. While he may not have gotten a buyer exactly, at least he’s got a new paying job. It looks like he’s in good company, too. According to MediaWeek, Metacafe plans to “double its revenues next year and reach profitability.”
And that’s just the kind of talk that keeps those bubbles bubbling.

Jeff Harbaugh just wrote up his analysis of the most recent Zumiez quarterly report but the part of his column that has everyone talking is something he mentioned about Zumiez purchasing 14.3 percent of an unnamed apparel and hardgood manufacturer.
On May 11th, Zumiez bought a 14.3% interest in a manufacturer of apparel and hard goods for $2 million. I emailed Zumiez asking for more details but they aren’t disclosing any, which is what I expected. Zumiez has the right to sell its interest back any time between the fifth and the seventh anniversary of the investment. And the company they invested in has an option to buy their stock back on or after the seventh anniversary of the initial investment.
And it makes us wonder: what brand is so important to Zumiez’s that the core mall retailer was willing to pay $2 million to keep them in business. If you have any ideas, please leave them in the comments

Robin Leach has obviously traded his “champagne wishes and caviar dreams” in for something little more downscale as he uses his column in Las Vegas Weekly to discuss the million dollar “battle” between the Maloof Money Cup and Rob Dyrdek’s Street League.
At the center of the battle is skate sensation Chris Cole. He’s been the $100,000 winner at the Maloof events for the past three consecutive contests, but he’s signed on exclusively with Rob for the pro tour that hits our Thomas & Mack Arena on Sept. 25. Rob promises the world’s best skateboarders competing for the most prize money in history, with a real-time scoring format in which every trick counts. . . . However, Joe Maloof, who with brother Gavin runs the Sacramento Kings, and George Maloof, who runs the Palms, are now offering a $1 million cash bounty. Fans say it’s aimed at keeping Chris on their team. The first skateboarder to win four consecutive $100,000 Maloof Money Cup events gets the $1 million payday.
Never really thought we’d see the day that skateboarding would make the Lifestyles of the Rich and Vegased.

According to a new study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine the “most hazardous” event at the Vancouver Olympics was snowboardcross where nearly “75 per cent of female athletes sustained injuries during the rough-and-tumble races.” But it was so much fun to watch.
“Overall, we are a little concerned about the increasing number of injuries that are not just minor,” International Olympic Committee medical commission head Arne Ljungqvist told The Associated Press on Monday. “Some of this can be regulated by stricter rules.”
We always through it was Roller Derby on snow.

Starting Friday September 10, 2010 Weezer fans can buy the new Weezer album Hurley at PacSun three days ahead of its official release, according to a story on Stereogum. Not only that, but there will reported be “Weezer-inspired” clothing for sale as well.
If “Weezer-inspired” refers to the band’s nerdy, ’90s look of worn cardigans/hoodies, plaid shirts buttoned up to the throat, ’70s sportswear, etc., then isn’t it more to the spirit of the band to get the originals in thrift stores?
Nope. Rivers is an aging rock star and as anyone who’s read Bill Flannagan’s Evening’s Empire knows, the most important thing about being a rock star is getting paid.

That may be the “no duh” headline of the week. But we’re just reminding ourselves to get ready for the Hurley Pro. The ASP is pretty excited about this event because it will be the first elite stop with the all-new format and 34 man tour. Lone San Clemente, California elite tour member Patrick “The Last” Gudauskas is apparently stoked:
“Everyone on tour surfs so well that it’s really anyone’s game at trestles,” Gudauskas said. “Surfers I’ll be looking forward to seeing surf are for sure Dane (Reynolds) and Jordy (Smith). I’m also psyched to see Brett Simpson out there along with Dusty (Payne). I think the young crew’s going to be flairing. I can’t wait to bring the heat. I think for myself, the local knowledge will just give me extra comfort to go big. I grew up surfing it, and have a lot of passion to do well at home in front of my friends and family. It’s kind of like everyone coming to your stadium to play the Superbowl. You want to give the home crowd something to froth on, kind of like Simpo (Brett Simpson) at HB.”
