Burton’s New TRON Snowboard Boot

by The Editors on June 22, 2010

Tron BootFor this coming winter Burton has reportedly hooked up with Disney to produce a “Tron-inspired” snowboard boots inspired by the upcoming Disney film, according to a story on Stitchkingdom.com.

Burton will offer an exclusive snowboard boot that blends the best-in-class functionality and technology of Burton Snowboards, with the DNA of the original TRON. Inspired by the story’s strong graphic look and feel, the Burton boot is made to look like something out of the future, yet seen through the eyes of a snowboarder back in 1982 when the first film released.

So is that primitive future or future retro? Burton will not be alone. Oakely, Hurley, and Adidas are also getting in on the exploitatron.

Shaun White Out Of Dew Tour #1

by The Editors on June 22, 2010

White DewShaun White’s triumphant return to skateboarding will apparently have to wait until another day according to a report from the Associated Press (Mr. White is big news now). He is out of the Boston Dew Tour Boston event due to injury.

Event spokeswoman Katie Trotsky says White’s representatives report he rolled an ankle while training and won’t be able to participate in the two-day 2010 Dew Tour event. However, he will be in NBC-TV’s broadcast booth for the vert finals Saturday.

Can you image what that’s going to do to the Dew Tour TV ratings? But that’s okay, he was too tired to compete at the US Open of Snowboarding this year, too. Then again, maybe he’s just sitting it out so he can attend the Twilight Saga: Eclipse premiere in Hollywood on June 24, 2010. Could that be it?

Russian Billionaire May Buy Blackcomb

by The Editors on June 22, 2010

Whistler LogoThe Wall Street Journal is reporting today that Fortress Investment Group, LLC, the parent company of Whistler-Blackcomb resort has reportedly been speaking with Russian billionaire Vladimir Potanin about his purchasing the resort.

Mr. Potanin, the main shareholder of metals giant OAO Norlisk Nickel, has expressed an interest in the property. His investment vehicle, Interros Co., is currently building a new ski resort in Sochi, Russia, home of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

The best buyer would probably be a company with little knowledge of the economics of North American ski resorts, because really, who else would want it?

Quik Corporate Architect’s Homework

by The Editors on June 21, 2010

Hasells Home

Ruth Hassell is the architect responsible for Quiksilver’s headquarters in Huntington Beach, California. And when she’s not designing clever ways to make the interior of a two story concrete pushups look more inviting she’ apparently had time to design a home for her family in Tustin, California’s Lemon Heights, according to a story on The Is Brand X.

“I wanted the house to be a vivid reflection of built work that was Californian and a direct response to our time and to this place,” she says, “not a dim reflection of a misremembered style from another lifetime and another continent.” . . . Free from constraints, Hasell designed her three-bedroom, three-bathroom house that harnesses natural light, conserves energy and enhances comfort throughout 3,300 square feet dug into the eucalyptus-shaded slope.

From the look of this beautiful home she’s seems to be most comfortable working in concrete. Which is probably good because the outside of her house looks quite like the inside of Quik.

Don’t Surf On Sunday In Black & White

by The Editors on June 21, 2010

Shark ShortsbwAccording to a study conducted by the Florida Program for Shark Research at the Florida Museum of Natural History at Volusia County, Florida there seems to be a couple things that consistently show up when it comes to shark attacks in Florida:

The study, published in “Sharks and Their Relatives II,” found that sharks have the ability to see contrast in color and that the likelihood of a shark attack increases when there’s a new moon, swimmers are in 6 feet of water or less, on a Sunday and if they’re wearing a black-and-white swimsuit.

So maybe it best to surf midweek and leave your Volcom Bruce Annihilator Mod boardies at home the next time a surf calls for sharky waters.

Kiss Those Helmet Cams Goodbye

by The Editors on June 21, 2010

GogglecamHonestly, no one looked dumber last season than all the weekend warrior snow shreds we saw riding down the groomer with cameras sticking up out of the tops of their helmets like techno-dunce caps.

Now, thanks to Liquid Image Company, none of us will have to know they’re filming. That’s because Liquid Image has built the camera directly into a pair of goggles.

The hands free unit has a 5.0 MP (2560 x 1920) camera mode and a video mode that records HD720P video (1280×720) at a rate up to 30 frames per second with audio. The Summit Series HD Video Camera Snow Goggle is easy to operate. There is a button for On/Off/Mode and another button for the shutter. To record a photo or a video, simply turn on the camera, choose the mode, then press the shutter button. LED lights inside the goggle indicate the mode to the user. Large side buttons along the right side of the frame allow for greater dexterity while wearing gloves. . . . The Summit Series HD can hold a Micro SD/SDHC Card up to 32 GB. With the use of a micro SD/SDHC card, the camera is capable of recording thousands of photos or hours of HD video.

Now if only these things synched with an iPhone for live Qik cam streaming. . .

Malibu’s Paparazzi Pounders Well Hung

by The Editors on June 21, 2010

Jurors who were deciding the fate of Skylar Peak, 26, and Philip Hildebrand, 31, two Malibu surfers who allegedly got into a paparazzi punch out at Malibu two years ago while the photographers were shooting actor Matthew McConaughey, have decided that they can’t decide in the misdemeanor battery case against the men, according to a story in the LA Times.

The hung verdict comes after about half a dozen delays in the trial of Skylar Peak, 26, and Philip Hildebrand, 31, who were each facing one count of misdemeanor battery.

This is the second mistrial for the case. Some take this latest twist as a perfect example of Malibu jurors protecting their own from the outside.

Alli Sports Buys Standard Boardshop

by The Editors on June 21, 2010

Standard BoardshopAlli Sports, the NBC/MTV owned parent company of the Dew Tour announced today that they have purchased the Carlsbad, California based online retailer Standard Boardshop. Founder Pete McAfee appears to be very happy to have someone else paying the bills.

“Myself and the rest of the Standard Boardshop team couldn’t be more excited to join the Alli family,” said McAfee, General Manager of Consumer Products for Alli. “Alli Shop will allow consumers the opportunity to shop online for the latest in apparel and products from many of the top brands while at the same time consuming in-depth editorial content.”

With media dollars drifting away it’s probably not a bad idea for Alli to get into the business of selling physical products that kids will actually buy. Although the idea of content and shopping reminds us a little of the old Swell.com model that never really worked out all that well. Then again, it’s nice of Chris Miller to look after his people so well.
