Shepard Fairey sure knows how to work it. We don’t even want one of these boards and we’re still linking it up.

Romancing The Bro

by The Editors on November 30, 2008

450Flirting01-JanetyRomance novelist Jane Porter was recently divorced, 40, and on her own in Hawaii when she met Oahu surf school owner Ty Gurney. That meeting became the start for a novel (Flirting With Forty), a made-for-TV movie (staring Heather Locklear), and a child who is due in May.

“There was this surfer guy walking by — oh, my God!” Porter recalled. “He was tattooed, with a bulldog just above his board shorts. He was very young. He was incredibly good-looking. He was exactly the kind of person I am not attracted to. I was a little afraid of him.” . . . Porter had her novel’s final plot element — the alluring surfer and the dilemma he would present: “Should a woman stay on the road previously traveled? Or be brave enough to follow a road not traveled?”

Apparently, that whole Waikiki beach boy thing still can pay off for everyone involved.

Jake Loves His Editorial

by The Editors on November 30, 2008

We know this has gone on way, way, way too long (we’ve already said that three times we think). But now, Jake Burton Carpenter has written an editorial for the Burlington Free Press regarding the Love board debacle in which he outlines all the amazing financial benefits Burton has brought snowboarding and the state of Vermont, and then issues a veiled threat that he would “rather relocate the company to another state than compromise our commitment to listen to core snowboarders.”

We’re so over this whole story that we’re not even going to comment.

Beachley Gets Sunset Beach Proposal

by The Editors on November 30, 2008

April-And-Kirk-Pengilly---Jeremy-Yau-300X380Layne Beachley and INXS musician Kirk Pengilly (pictured right with his daughter) are now officially engaged.

The couple have been holed up in Hawaii for the past week enjoying Thanksgiving celebrations while Beachley prepares to compete in the Roxy Pro Tour next week. But on Thursday, Pengilly used the sands of Hawaii’s Sunset Beach to spell out his grand intentions. . . . In broad letters decorated with the island’s native hibiscus flower, he wrote simply, “Marry Me”. A bottle of champagne served as the necessary punctuation.

Pengilly, described by The Daily Telegraph as a “serial bachelor,” has been married once before and has one 20-year-old daughter April Rose.

Nixon Gives Good Headphones

by The Editors on November 27, 2008

Headphone View-1We mentioned this months ago, but Nixon is finally kicking off the official launch of their new line of headphones. The rigs are set to hit retail stores in December, just in time for Christmas. Chad couldn’t be happier.

Having the ability to re-think the product development from the ground up, how you want to use it and the way you use it has been a fun challenge,” states Nixon’s Marketing Director, Chad DiNenna. “The team’s involvement all the way down to the audio sampling process, matching the music they listen to most with how this product will perform, elevates the product for everyone. I’m excited for people to discover the product.”

The headphones, which will retail for between $40-$200, will be going head-to-head with Skullcandy. And from the photos we’re giving Nixon the win on packaging already.

Billabong Sues The Brothers Neilsen

by The Editors on November 26, 2008

BrothersneilsenAustralia’s former Brother Neilsen retail chain apparently owes Billabong International AUS$674,000 and the company wants to get paid. That’s apparently why Billabong’s subsidiary GSM Operations is taking them to court, according to Goldcoast.com.au.

GSM Operations has filed a statement of claim in the Queensland Supreme Court seeking damages from Paul Neilsen and Ahmed El Safty, along with an associate of Mr El Safty, John Hassan. . . .The debt is alleged to have been accrued by Brothers Neilsen between November last year and May this year.

What else can manufacturers do if a retailer has a going-out-of-business fire sale on product that they haven’t even paid for.

The Dave McCoy Interview In Forbes

by The Editors on November 26, 2008

Hidi-119-Dave-Mccoy1Dave McCoy was one of the last, great, hardcore, real-deal resort visionaries. McCoy no longer owns the mountain, but the resort still survives today because of the foundation he built for it. Ask any one of the tens of thousands of people who worked for him over the years and you will hear the same thing: Dave McCoy loved sliding down mountains and nothing made him happier than firing up the lifts at Mammoth Mountain and then heading out to count smiles.

There’s no way to understand my life unless you see where I’ve spent it. When it’s clear and calm on the mountain, there’s no more beautiful place in the world.

And he’s right. . . . like he’s always been.

Five Questions With Sheckler’s Dad

by The Editors on November 26, 2008

RandyshecklerWith the new breed of über jugend comes the assumption that the parents are responsible for pushing their kids to the top ala Richard Williams, Joeeph Jackson, or Lynne Spears. But most people (and parents) don’t know what it’s like to have extremely gifted kids. Ryan Sheckler’s dad Randy breaks that down pretty straight up in this interview with Examiner.com’s Colin Bane.

Ryan was a trip from the day he was born. He had uncanny hand-eye coordination, he was walking at about 6 or 7 months, and we always knew he had a gift. We just didn’t quite know how it was going to play out. Growing up he played T-ball, he played all the traditional grass ball sports, but ultimately none of that ever made sense for him. From the time he was about 2 years old the first thing to come out of the car was always a skateboard, so we supported him and we decided, “We’ll do whatever we can to get behind this.” As he got more into it we found the California Amateur Skateboard League and we just went with it.

Guess sometimes parents just have to be supportive and get out of the way.

Shaun White Busts Into Top 10 Rentals

by The Editors on November 26, 2008

61Itzldempl. Aa260 Blockbuster Canada just released their numbers for top ten video gamer rentals on the four major platforms and the newly released Shaun White Snowboard game is right in there on all platforms.

Number 6 on Playstation 3, number 10 on Playstation 2, number 6 on Xbox 360, and number 5 on Wii. Not too bad when you consider most of the game’s competition are shoot ’em up war games.

PacSun CEO Buying Up Her Own Stock

by The Editors on November 26, 2008

Nothing shows a CEO’s commitment to a bright and glorious future like buying stock on themselves. That’s what PacSun’s Chairman/CEO Sally Frame Kasaks just did, according to a story on StreetInsider.com:

After the close, Chairman/CEO Sally Frame Kasaks disclosed a purchase of 200,000 shares on 11/24 at prices from $1.10-$1.14, bringing her stake to 390,000 shares. In addition, Director Grace Nichols bought 10,000 shares on 11/24 at $1.13, encompassing her entire stake.

If we were interested in owning stock in the retail sector, this might be an interesting cue, or just a last ditch effort by a CEO attempting to boost her company’s stock price. On Wall Street you never know.
