Norwegian Snowboard Slasher Film

by The Editors on October 14, 2008

coldprey.jpgAccording to the horror movie site Dread Central the Norwegian director Roar Uthaug’s snowboard slasher film Cold Prey may be released in North America on DVD soon. Here’s a bit of their review :

Five youngsters go up into the mountains for some snowboarding goodness. When one of their own is injured in a mishap, the group seeks shelter in an abandoned ski resort. Big mistake! As bad luck would have it, there’s serial killer on the loose and he’s determined to turn these unsuspecting kids into his next sport.

Sounds a lot like a “promotional trip” we went on once.

Wasserman Digs Into Snow

by The Editors on October 10, 2008

SnowboarderWasserman Media Group is ramping up to launch another Sportnet.com site with Snowboarder.com. They apparently picked up former Future Snowboarding web editor James Sullivan and plan to open for business in the next couple weeks.

For a look at exactly what Wasserman is building click the Sportnet.com site and you’ll see that they are not fooling around in the online space. They’ve been busy lately building a pretty deep collection of online properties that are ripe for picking up online ad dollars in the future.

The Wizzards of Xtreme

by The Editors on October 10, 2008

WizzardWizzardX.tv is a new “site” created by podcast host Wizzard Media under the direction of a guy named Skip Fredricks. Here’s how they describe this new action sports video site in their press release:

WizzardX host, Emily Dickinson, will bring the tightest shots, gnarliest crashes and sweetest moves to life each week as the channel grows to include over 20 of the top podcast shows in the action sports genre. This week, Emily promotes four anchor shows, Dirt, Street, Snow and Water featuring some of the top professionals in their respective sport.

Okay, correct us if we are wrong, but there aren’t even 10 action sports podcasts worth watching and yet, WizzardX is going to include over 20?

Watching Wizzard X is like walking into some shady action sports past. All the footage is old, the events irrelevant, and the shows mostly unwatchable. The site seems to follow the idea that by throwing enough crap out on the web someone will eventually watch it.

Our big question: who do they think they’re going to fool with this? Certainly not the kids.

Fuel To Finally Air Boost Mobile Pro

by The Editors on October 9, 2008

Fueltv LogoThis is the sort of thing that makes us chuckle: On October 23, 2008 at 5 PM PST Fuel TV will be broadcasting a one-hour “Highlight Special” of the 2008 Boost Mobile Pro at Trestles that we all watched live online a month ago. Cable TV is so on it.

The show will also give a behind-the-scenes look at the lifestyles of professional surfing and highlights from one of the busiest weeks in the action sports industry including the Surfer Poll Awards where Kelly Slater won his monumental 14th award and Dane Reynolds won the Best Maneuver Award for his aerial artistry in the film “Dude Cruise.”

There’s just nothing like action sports reruns to get the heart thumping. We can hardly wait.

Knife Show: Painters Of Light

by The Editors on October 6, 2008

Looks like the filmmaking minds behind snowboard film production company Knife Show have brought artist Lia Halloran’s “light painting” ideas to video with Mike Benson’s Magic Flashlights. Thomas Kincaide would be proud.

Ubisoft Spends $10 Million On Shaun White

by The Editors on October 6, 2008

41151-Shaun White StickerTo launch their new “alternative sports” title Shaun White Snowboarding French Game-maker Ubisoft will spend $10 million in what Mediaweek is calling “nontraditional media buys” in the weeks leading up to the Nov. 16 game launch.

Anyone watching South Park’s first two episodes will find the game nearly impossible to miss. For the series premiere Oct. 8, Ubisoft bought out all of the ad inventory and will run three separate two-minute spots for its flagship Shaun White Snowboarding, Prince of Persia and Farcry 2 titles. The second episode will feature only ads for Shaun White Snowboarding.

They also have a string of appearances on ESPN’s shows all day on November 16 because what’s good for Shaun White is good for the X Games. Let just say this: we think Ubisoft is being tragically optimistic about how many copies of this game they’re going to sell.

It’s Always Better In A Theater

by The Editors on October 3, 2008

Always Snow

We haven’t been to one snowboard movie this fall. Can’t really explain how that happened, but let’s just say that unless they’re being shown in a theatre with seats (and not some polluted bar on tiny flat screen monitors with a drunk realtor yelling in our ear) we prefer enjoying snowboard films in the privacy of our own homes.

Which brings us to our point: If you want to see Burton’s newest shredstraviganza It’s Always Snowing Somewhere in a theater you’re in luck. The following shows are in full-on theaters: Calgary on October 16, Denver on October 21, 2008, Salt Lake City on October 22, Los Angeles on the 24, or Burlington on October 30. The rest are in shops, bars, or in Portland’s case, October 23 in a bowling alley.

Hey, five out of eleven in theaters isn’t that bad. Click the line for all the details.

EXPN Print Has Some Advertisers

by The Editors on October 2, 2008

ExpnYou know things are tough when a story gets written about a magazine insert because it has 18 advertisers. But that’s why Media Daily News just wrote up EXPN magazine.

One reason that EXPN may be prospering is its 12- to-29-year-old male target, which seems to have disposable income during the economic downturn. “They’re as unaffected by this as you can be,” said Steven Binder, vice president of ad sales at ESPN The Magazine.

Unaffected? Sounds like something only a VP of ad sales could say. You know, someone riding high on 18 “pospering” pages of advertising.

Apocalypse Snow’s Second Coming

by The Editors on October 1, 2008

Apocalypse Snow Le Retour-1As one of the first films to capture the true snow shredding potential of snowboards Apocalypse Snow has been revered for years.

Now the movie’s star (and Apocalypse Snowboards founder) Regis Rolland has teamed up with filmaker Didier Lafond for a remake of the cult film called Apocalypse Snow – Le Retour.

Based on the similar James Bond style chase sequences that made the first film so popular, this time however, our hero finds himself speed riding, acrobatic paragliding and wingsuiting, as well as partaking in some breathtaking back country ski and snowboarding scenes. . . . Shot in High Definition, the 26 minute film will be available on DVD just in time for Christmas and features some of the biggest names in mountain and aerial extreme sports. The DVD will also include an additional 52 minutes of footage documenting the making of the movie, filmed in and around Les Arcs and the Mont Blanc region.

While we don’t believe it’s possible to come close to recreating the absurdist alpine magic of Apocalypse Snow 20 years later, it will be fun to see them try.
