US Open Disappears From Transworld

by The Editors on July 27, 2009

Twsurf LogoThis morning while writing a post about how good and timely Transworld Surf’s coverage of the 2009 Hurley US Open of Surfing was this year (they had winning photos up minutes after the fact) we popped over to the site to find it completely down for the count. Like, blank white page. Then a while later there was a black page with some old content on it.

Turns out most of the Transworld Media sites were down this morning including Snowboarding, Skateboarding, Surf, and Motocross. As of 11:30 AM PST most of the sites were back up, however, it appears to be from a backup made on July 22, 2009. Most all the US Open content from the final four days is gone.

We’re guessing there are some pretty pissed people right, especially those who labored night and day all week to get it all up.

X Games 15 Gets Loop’d In

by The Editors on July 27, 2009

Loopdcom-Action-Sports-Community-For-Motocross-Surf-Skate-Snow-Bmx-Bike-And-MorejpgWe have to give credit to Scott Tilton, founder of Loop’d Network. He continues to land great press release fodder for his “online community for action sports.” This time he’s lined up to be the “official online community” for X Games 15, according to a story in the San Diego Business Journal.

As part of the agreement, ESPN.com Action Sports will provide year-round news for Loop’d Network across all of its action sports hubs. ESPN will also provide RSS feeds from ESPN’s columnists and bloggers in skateboarding, snowboarding, free skiing and surfing.

Wait, can’t anyone run and ESPN RSS feed is they want? Isn’t that what RSS feeds are? Guess this is just one more thing about Loop’d Network that we’ll never understand.

All The US Open’s Exclusive Live HD Streams

by The Editors on July 23, 2009

Ustream

How many live Internet streams does one surfing event really need? If it’s the 2009 US Open of Surfing apparently it needs a more than a couple.

Hurley is streaming it live on Ustream. Transworld (the official media sponsor) is streaming an “enhanced HD” stream on TransWorld Surf, and then Fuel.TV will be running an “exclusively True HD webcast” on Saturday and Sunday. And the best part? It’s all the same show: the same commentators, same graphics, same angles, same feed.

Great for the viewers like us, not so great for those trying to sell advertising packages around an “exclusive” webcast.

Jamie O’Brien on Who is JOB?

by The Editors on July 21, 2009

20080711-Img 4413-300X199We’ve laughed, wept, and vomited to @whoisJOB posts ever since Charlie Smith began writing them. Now, we get what is reportedly Jamie O’Brien’s view on why he had Chaz doing the tweeting for him. Here are a few bits from his post on LikeBitchim.com:

The fucking surf industry has strangled the surf media so tight for so long that the brains of all surf writers have turned to mush. The media and most of the surfers believe their own con. That surfers must be nice, polite, petite friends to political correctness and each other. Even if they are not, they must pretend. I am not this and I don’t care to be or pretend to be. I have enough friends, I have my own interests and I don’t need them told by drones. . . Fuck the magazines, fuck the fake interviews, fuck the false humility, fuck the deception and cover-ups. Write something else you little minded clones. Surfing is best left to me, writing to Charlie. Admire us and our freedoms until it inspires you enough to seek your own.

But, ah, this kind of sounds like Chaz writing again. . . either way, it’s good and we don’t want to mess with it.

Drive Thru Australia Rules The Road

by The Editors on July 17, 2009

In anyone else’s hands the Drive Thru Series from Poor Specimen would likely have broken down on the side of the surf film highway years ago. But with Greg Browning at the wheel and Donovan Frankenreiter and Benji Weatherly’s as co-pilots it seems that they just keep getting better and better. This is especially true with Drive Thru Australia, which had its world premiere last night (July 16, 2009) at the world famous La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas, California.

The crowds began showing up at six o’clock and by the time the doors opened for the second of two sold out shows their was a mob out front. And this wasn’t a free surf film showing. It was full pop $8 night at the movies price. While Wired Magazine Editor Chris Anderson may think that digital content is headed for free, the Drive Thru series proves that surfers are not only willing to pay for quality content, but are quite happy doing it. “These are the best surfers in the world,” said one man standing in line for the 9 PM showing. “Of course I’m going to pay to see them.”

071209M 10The other thing that didn’t seem to bother anyone was that this was Donovan Frankenreiter, Benji Weatherly and Greg Browning’s (pictured right with Pat O’Connell) second drive through Australia. Five years ago (an eternity to groms in the audience) they made a similar trip with Rob Machado, Kalani Robb, and Dean Morrison. This time Pat O’Connell, Shane Dorian, Mark Occhilupo, and Andy Irons joined in.

Magazine Ad Pages Still Slumping

by The Editors on July 15, 2009

Img 1963It’s a good thing we never seem to tire of beating the dead pony named print, because the news from the world of magazine advertising (not surprisingly) just keeps getting worse in Q2 2009, according to a story on Media Buyer Planner.

All categories tracked by the Publishers Information Bureau were down by double digits, with automotive, financial, insurance and real estate being hit the hardest, writes Media Life. Automotive fell 47.8%, while financial was down 48.8%. Toiletries and cosmetics performed the best, down 14.1%. . . Total rate-card reported spending for the second quarter was down 22%, while total spending for the first half was down 21.1%.

But how are things going in the land of action sports magazines? Well, as we say nearly every quarter, the only mags from our world that get tracked by the Magazine Publishers of America are those produced by Bonnier Corporation’s Transworld Media. And while it could be argued that it’s not fair to only pick on them, we don’t have the time (nor the magazines) to count up the ad pages in all the action magazines. So here’s how it looked for Transworld Media vs. Q2 2008 based on total ad revenue and advertising pages.

                         $2009 $2008 %change Pages 09 Pages 08 %change
Transworld Snowboarding 1,069,312 1,897,419 -43.6 52.84 98.33 -46.3
Transworld Skateboarding 7,358,215 9,149,705 -19.6 334.67 433.20 -22.7
Transworld Surf 2,536,506 3,710,912 -31.6 230.67 353.00 -34.7
TransWorld Motocross 3,111,709 4,004,212 -22.3 248.71 336.01 -26.0
RIDE BMX 1,256,788 1,231,590 2.0 127.33 131.02 -2.8
Quad Off Rad Mag 1,174,915 1,739,876 -32.5 123.19 189.96 -35.1

That’s a drop of 424 pages of advertising in three months and while we don’t really think the revenue amounts are accurate (they’re based on full rate card pricing), it does represent a ($5,226,269) pretty large percentage drop.

Good thing Bonnier’s foodie magazine Saveur is continuing to break records.
