by The Editors on September 26, 2018

Not gonna lie, this whole mid90s thing is looking pretty sweet. Maybe a movie can save the skateboard industry! Now all we need is for every kid in America to see the movie and then go out and buy a skateboard. . . could happen.

RIP: Gerhard Gross

by The Editors on August 15, 2018

We were saddened to learn that former Associate Editor of Snowboard Canada, Managing Editor of Transworld Snowboarding, and Dew Tour content director Gerhard Gross died Tuesday, August 14, 2018 after nearly two years of bravely, stubbornly striving to survive stomach cancer. He was 39.

Unlike many in the snowboard industry we didn’t get much time with Gerhard before his diagnosis, but we will forever cherish every minute we spent with him, his wife Kris, and their son Gerhard Gross IV.  Our thoughts are with Kris, little G, and Gerhard’s entire family. So Long, Yobeat.com It Was Good

by The Editors on August 2, 2018

Admittedly, we haven’t been paying much attention to anything that doesn’t fall pre-packaged into our email boxes, but we did want to take a moment to remember all the good times we’ve had with Yobeat.com over the past 21 years. There are far too many to mention, but let’s just say that we were there at the beginning, we’re thankful for everything the site helped create, and we’re glad to still be here waving goodbye to the last great independent snowboarding website.

Here’s what Yobeat’s founder Brooke Geery had to say about the site’s demise:

Dear Dedicated Readership,

Twenty-one years. When I began this website on my AOL account, I never imagined it would last this long or take me to the places it has. But they say all good things must come to an end, and my friends, that day is today. The website you love to hate will not see any futher updates. It will remain online for the time being, but may be deleted at any time. I recommend you print out your favorite articles now or forever live in regret when they are gone.

This was not an easy decision to come to, and it was aided in large part by a legal battle with my former partner. As a result, the name Yobeat no longer belongs to me. For the record, the instagram @yobeat is no longer affiliated with this website and any merchandise you may encounter is not either. The media juggernaut and the T-shirt company have parted ways and I do not want to do anything to inadvertently promote the latter.

Instead, I aim to continue my efforts on a new platform under the name Blower Media. As of right now, it’s just a logo and some stickers, but it could be something amazing some day. Stay tuned.

Brooke Geery
Founder, Editor, Publisher, Yobeat.com.
1997-2018
RIP

Monster Children Moves To Far Chinatown

by The Editors on May 17, 2018

Monster Children, the Australian born, sideways action culture magazine, has announced the transfer of their SoCal office from Eagle Rock, California to “a new workspace and gallery” in Far Chinatown that they will share with Pabst Blue Ribbon. The new spot looks exactly as we would expect — sparse, empty, exposed brick, concrete and plywood floors, a pinball machine, and the occaional PBR logo/product.

Located in a renovated warehouse in the industrial area just north of downtown and across from LA’s State Historic Park, 1700 Naud will also house offices for both Monster Children and Pabst, along with temporary work spaces in an area of LA that is attracting substantial investment from the creative community. Neighbors include David Chang’s new Majordomo restaurant, NYC’s Baby’s All Right, Paradigm Entertainment Agency, Werkartz artist studio, and the groundbreaking street art and graffiti exhibitionBeyond the Streets.

Hypebeast Buys Out The Berrics

by The Editors on February 22, 2018

Urban sneaker streetwear music fashion website Hypebeast has reportedly purchased a majority stake in what remains of Steve Berra and Eric Koston’s The Berrics business, according to a story on Techcrunch.com

Now, The Berrics is being acquired by Hypebeast and they’re forming a new company “The Berrics Company”, with the express mission of making sure the particular spirit that it was founded to foster in skating never dies. Hypebeast is putting in $750k and ending up with 51% of The Berrics and a majority of board seats. The Berrics will contribute its approximate $2.5M in assets, $1M in liabilities and a board seat. Hypebeast has been on a bit of a tear on the markets, with genuinely solid increases in revenue and profits over the past year, so this seems like a smart small acquisition for the company.

We haven’t paid that much attention to The Berrics since they killed off The Skateboard Mag, but this sounds like one more circuit in their downward spiral. Obviously, Hypebeast founder Kevin Ma (above center) does not agree.

Shaun White Reads His Life Story

by The Editors on February 6, 2018

Ever wondered just how Shaun White transformed himself from a cute little snowboard kid sessioning the Encinitas YMCA miniramp everyday into a resort-owning, rock and rolling business titan with Olympic and ESPN gold medals swinging from his neck? Well, this fall Mr. White will tell it all in his own words and with his own voice as Houghton Mifflin Harcourt releases his as-yet-untitled memoir on Audible.com. Here’s their pitch:

The memoir will be a radical playbook on how to become a champion. A 3-time Olympian and repeat gold-medalist, and winner of an unprecedented 23 X-Games medals, Shaun White has been a fighter and a pioneer throughout his life, overcoming a congenital heart defect, periodic bouts of depression, and an establishment that didn’t take his sport seriously—until he became a legend and a leader whom everyone had to follow. It will be co-written with Neil Strauss, New York Times bestselling author of The Game.

Why shouldn’t Shaun’s memoir be written by the same guy who wrote the book on pick-up artists and Marilyn Manson’s autobiography, and Jenna Jameson’s How To Make Love Like a Porn Star). Oh, we’re looking forward to this one. For all the official details, please follow the jump.

GrindTV Becomes Adventure Sports Network

by The Editors on January 25, 2018

TEN: The Enthusiasts Network, parent of Transworld Snowboarding, Skateboarding, et. al., is rebranding their GrindTV website as the all new Adventure Sports Network.

“ASN aims to be the world’s most engaged digital media platform serving the ever-growing outdoor/adventure sports and lifestyle community,” said Norb Garrett, President of TEN’s Sports & Entertainment group. “ASN’s editorial strategy is unique in that it will generate original content around experiences, product, gear and travel while also leveraging TEN’s twelve action-adventure sports brands (such as Surfer, Powder, TransWorld Snowboarding and Canoe & Kayak) as well as building a network of amazing third-party content partners.”

Hey, it’s a plan, right? As a media company you can’t just sit around watching as all your brands whither away to nothing. You’ve got to do something. And this is something. Not sure the world is pining for another wide ranging, general interest adventure sports portal, but there’s no denying that it’s a plan that will look great in a PowerPoint deck. It might even convince a few companies to give TEN some of their marketing dollars, or maybe even create a profitable “partnership”. So that’s good. Plus, it’s got a bangin’ logo. What else do you need in these times?

For the official world from The Enthusiasts Network, please follow the jump.

Nick Woodman’s Wonderful Horrible Life

by The Editors on December 15, 2017

Inc. Magazine lays out the story of GoPro’s wild successes and failures in a rather sympathetic profile of founder Nick Woodman which begins with this sentence: Nick Woodman is crying.

After a decade of breakneck growth, GoPro held one of the most successful tech IPOs of 2014, which earned Woodman comparisons to Steve Jobs. But the past two years have been a cautionary tale: botched product rollouts, sweeping layoffs, a giant new initiative shuttered. The company was profitable each year following its bootstrapped launch, but it has lost money every quarter from the end of 2015 until the third quarter of 2017.

Though we’ve always appreciated Mr. Woodman’s ability to recklessly enjoy his successes, we’re not sure there are any major lesson’s to be learned here, however, that didn’t stop him from lining up some life tips. Jump to the end of the story if you don’t have time for the rest.
