Burton’s New TRON Snowboard Boot

by The Editors on June 22, 2010

Tron BootFor this coming winter Burton has reportedly hooked up with Disney to produce a “Tron-inspired” snowboard boots inspired by the upcoming Disney film, according to a story on Stitchkingdom.com.

Burton will offer an exclusive snowboard boot that blends the best-in-class functionality and technology of Burton Snowboards, with the DNA of the original TRON. Inspired by the story’s strong graphic look and feel, the Burton boot is made to look like something out of the future, yet seen through the eyes of a snowboarder back in 1982 when the first film released.

So is that primitive future or future retro? Burton will not be alone. Oakely, Hurley, and Adidas are also getting in on the exploitatron.

Alli Sports Buys Standard Boardshop

by The Editors on June 21, 2010

Standard BoardshopAlli Sports, the NBC/MTV owned parent company of the Dew Tour announced today that they have purchased the Carlsbad, California based online retailer Standard Boardshop. Founder Pete McAfee appears to be very happy to have someone else paying the bills.

“Myself and the rest of the Standard Boardshop team couldn’t be more excited to join the Alli family,” said McAfee, General Manager of Consumer Products for Alli. “Alli Shop will allow consumers the opportunity to shop online for the latest in apparel and products from many of the top brands while at the same time consuming in-depth editorial content.”

With media dollars drifting away it’s probably not a bad idea for Alli to get into the business of selling physical products that kids will actually buy. Although the idea of content and shopping reminds us a little of the old Swell.com model that never really worked out all that well. Then again, it’s nice of Chris Miller to look after his people so well.

Sweetness And Blood: Another Surf History Book

by The Editors on June 18, 2010

372Last week the New York Times book review featured a story on Berlin-based writer Michael Scott Moore’s surfing history book Sweetness and Blood: How Surfing Spread from Hawaii to California to the Rest of the World, with Some Unexpected Results. In it he searches for the world’s first surfer.

Moore’s own history is a thing of shreds and patches, casually, almost randomly, assembled. But what he has done, subtly and beguilingly, is write a book about surfing that often is not really about surfing but about simply being alive (and, in some cases, dead).

Matt Warshaw says the book is “Warm, smart, funny, and beautifully written.” West of Jesus author Steven Kotler says it is a “wonderful and engaging book . . . [that] combines folk history, pop art, and great old-fashioned travel writing.” Moore also quotes Ben “the world’s greatest surf writer” Marcus in the first few pages of the book so we might just pick it up.

What Were You Expecting? A New Site?

by The Editors on May 28, 2010

Boardistan Sq SAs much as we would love to have spent the last few days upgrading Boardistan.com, we’re just thankful to have our old site back in one piece and functioning. Seriously. Thank you to everyone who noticed we were down and texted, IM’d, or emailed encouragement and/or theories on exactly what happened.

We can assure you, none of the rumors were true. We were neither hacked, nor hired away by any large companies who do not allow blogging on the side. And we most certainly were not strong-armed into taking the site down by powerful men with smooth, confident South African accents.

Our problems over the last few days were much more mundane and entirely too retarded to discuss here in any kind of detail other than to say this–– If a set of hard drives are reportedly backing each other up automatically that doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea to have a couple more back-ups as well.

As we learned last week, sometimes DIY means “destroy it yerself.”
