Burton Snowboards continues on their “put a rapper on it” program with a new partnership with Pharrell Williams and Bionic Yarn.
Featuring unique Peruvian-inspired designs, bright primary colors and vintage stripes, the new collection is created exclusively with BIONIC Yarn, an incredible thread that uses 40-45% recycled content and is 400% stronger than conventional yarns.

Longtime skateboarding and punk rock documentarian and creator Mark Waters is hoping to round up funding to help re-open Orange County, California’s Unit B. The all-ages space, which featured ramps, live bands, and art, closed last June after being open for a year. Now, Waters wants to relaunch the space and do it right. That’s why he’s turned to crowdsourcing site indiegogo for help.
“When the doors were closed at Unit B, it hurt,” Waters says. “But I felt like it was an opportunity again — a chance to build on what we’d done at Unit B, and make it better, make it completely legal, and basically build a new spot that was designed to be what we want. Not a skatepark with a stage, but a community space designed for live music, skateboarding, art shows, record swaps, a library/bookstore, a recording studio, as well as rehearsal studios and anything else that we feel the need to create. This is a community space like no other, and we’ve proven that this concept works.”

Sal Masekela’s biopic Alekesam follows the story of his jazz musician father Hugh Masekela and the relationship that has developed between the once distant father and son. It is the story of South Africa, and freedom, and music, and action sports, and it’s being featured tonight (Friday, October 4, 2013) at the San Diego Film Festival.
Alekesam plays at 6:30 PM at the Reading Theater in the Gaslamp District. The theater is located at 701 5th Ave, in San Diego.

SacTown rockers Deftones (hey, what up Abe?) rolled out the official video for their new song Romantic Dreams and they’re not even in the edit. But skateboarder Jason Park is, according to a story on Loudwire.
“When we started this record cycle, we decided that we didn’t want to make any videos whatsoever,” Chino Moreno said. “They’re not much fun to make and they usually turn out pretty corny. But this was an idea that we were interested in because we’re all very keen skateboarders and we like the idea of marrying one of our songs to someone as talented as Jason Park.”
Makes sense. Let the music do the talking, or skateboarding in this case.

In the consumer electronics world new Bluetooth 4.0 speakers seem to be popping up every time we turn our heads. Even in the action sports space the competition for portable audio solutions is heating up. Nixon launched their Blaster speaker earlier this summer and now headphone maker SOL Republic is answering back with a collaboration with Motorola called Deck.
Like many other Bluetooth speakers Deck turns your phone into a mini boom box. Where the Deck differs is in what SOL Republic calls “Heist Mode.” This Bluetooth setting allows the speaker to pair with up to five different Bluetooth devices at once. When a song is playing, control of the Deck can be stolen by any other paired device. Don’t like the song your friend is playing, press play on your phone and launch something from your digital music collection.
While this control swapping may cause occasional panics at the disco, it’s actually pretty rad once you begin messing around with it. Say you’re skating a spot and are sick of your music. One of your friends can send his songs to the Deck. Or, if you’re just hanging out at the beach with friends you all can share music from your phones without having to pair and unpair or trade songs around. If you’re at home the Deck has mini jacks for both audio in and out so you can play Heist Mode through your home stereo or just blast some music off your phone. [click to continue…]

As a member of the Skid Kids his outlaw antics were often looked down on by b/b heirachy. Youngy didn’t care too much and despised the local comp scene that frothed over contests in 1ft waves at Manly. Youngy was all about pulling into gnarly pits and had the same head pumping style as Pat Caldwell. Brett had tongues wagging when he performed a pop song in the video nasty Rip The Pit. He was highly criticized for his role and eventually packed his bags to move to Japan where he worked promoting his sponsor Manta. It was in Japan that BY was killed when the car he was driving on a express lane highway crashed. Today he is remembered with the annual Brett Young Trials part of The Shark Island Challenge.

The T.F.R. Gallery in Encinitas, California is proud to present a solo-exhibition of framed prints from graphic artist John Van Hamersveld opening Friday, August 16, 2013. Van Hamersveld is most famous in the surf world for his iconic The Endless Summer movie poster.
John Van Hamersveld has been producing images that have defined the visual representation of surf and rock ‘n’ roll culture for over 50 years. Starting off his career with the immensely successful movie poster for The Endless Summer in 1966, Van Hamersveld’s influence on the world of graphic images was immediately profound. From there he moved on to produce over 300 album covers, including designs for the Beatles’ American pressing of the Magical Mystery Tour, the Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main St., Jefferson Airplane’s Crown of Creation, Grateful Dead’s Skeletons in the Closet, Blondie’s Eat to the Beat, KISS’ Hotter Than Hell, the Beach Boys’ Wild Honey, and The Doors’ An American Prayer.
