The Broadway Bomb, and annual outlaw skater race down Manahattan, ran into a little trouble yesterday (October 18, 2012) as the New York State Supreme Court handed out a “temporary restraining order” barring organizers from holding the eight-mile race that is scheduled for noon Saturday, October 20, 2012, according to a story in the NY Daily News.
City lawyers argued the annual event is an “unauthorized skateboard race” through traffic and was poised to attract more than 1,800 longboarders. . . The court ruling prompted event co-founder Ian Nichols to cancel the race “in order to avoid being prosecuted,” reads a message posted on the “Broadway Bomb” website. “Ian Nichols must officially cancel the ‘Broadway Bomb’ and relinquish all responsibility,” the message added. . . But the group also said it is planning to conduct a “flash mob” at 116th St. and Broadway at 11:50 a.m. Saturday and go ahead with the race at noon.
The threat of arrest probably won’t stop the carnage as more than 2,000 are planning on make the run, according to the Gothamist. Guess we’ll all know tomorrow. Follow the jump for a video from last year’s event.
Sole Tech’s Don Brown had his Insta from last night’s (October 13, 2012) Bake & Destroy premiere “riot” picked up and run in The Hollywood Reporter, not bad for a night out on the town. According to the story:
An unknown number of people attending a skateboarding movie premiere clashed with police Saturday night in Hollywood near the Vine Theater. . . . Several people identified by local media as skateboarders threw bottles at police officers, according to a report from NBC4. Twitter feeds from people on the scene described police in riot gear flanking the intersection of Hollywood Blvd. and Vine and walking toward the crowd.
So funny how the police can turn 300 people having fun into a “riot” simply by showing up in their ready to rumble suits, then again, it got the Baker Boys all over the news for free in the LA Times and newspapers all across the country. The only thing getting more coverage today was some guy jumping out of a hot air balloon.
Interesting to put what actually happened in terms of what NBC Los Angeles reported: “Angry mob of skaters” and pedestrians “running for their lives.” Just think how messed up all their other stories are?
A group of teen girls and their male getaway driver attempted to rip off a Pearland, Texas Zumiez store (even roughing up an employee) but they didn’t get far, according to a story on KTRK.com.
Police say it all started a few minutes earlier inside a Pearland Town Center shoe and clothing store when 18-year old Ashley Jackson, 17-year old Chrishonta Reshard and 19-year-old Angel Martin came in with plans to shoplift. . . “Chrishonta Reshard began selecting items just at random, just grabs T-shirts and starts stacking them in her arms,” Pearland Police Department Lt. Onesimo Lopez said. . . But police say a suspicious store employee jumped into action, blocking the door when she noticed two of the three girls trying to run out of the store with bags of clothes. . . “One girl charged at her like a linebacker, hits the clerk at the door — hits her hard enough to run into the door, push her out on the sidewalk and fall over a sign outside,” Lt. Lopez said.
Note to Zumiez: please make sure this employee gets to the 100k this year.
Former Billabong CEO Matthew Perrin is now being charged with “defrauding the Commonwealth Bank of $13.5 million,” according to a story in The Australian.
The charges relate to Mr Perrin allegedly forging the signature of his former wife, Nicole Bricknell, on documents where he used the value of a house he and his then wife owned jointly at Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast to obtain a loan of $13.5m from the Commonwealth Bank in 2008. . . Mr Perrin, 40, filed for bankruptcy in March 2009 with debts of $28.2m to 20 unsecured creditors, but he had previously spent four years on the BRW Rich List with his wife, recording a peak value of $151m in 2002 when he was 30.
Perrin is out on bail, however, he has apparently had his passport confiscated.
A gem thief in Montgomery Township, Pennsylvania hid out in a Costco until the place was closed and then made off with $91,000 in jewels, according to a story on 6abc.com. The only thing police have to go on is a DC Shoes hat.
Store cameras capture him wandering around the aisles dressed all in black and wearing a hat like with a logo from DC Shoes. . . When the coast is clear, he hides, though police aren’t publicly releasing where. . . “It’s an area where if someone was hiding there, an employee would not look in that particular area to see if anyone was still in there,” said Detective Bennis. . . . The suspect stays hidden for roughly three and a half hours as the store closes and employees do a final sweep to make sure customers are gone. . . Around midnight, 15 minutes after the last employee leaves, the man makes his move, grabbing a TV before he crashes it into jewelry cases in complete darkness.
Guess he has to pay for those drifting tires somehow.
A 18 or 19-year-old skateboarder from Watsonville, California has been rolling around grabbing women’s asses for the past could weeks and police (and area women) are hoping the catch the perv, according to a story in the Mercury News.
About 6 p.m. Sunday, a man who appeared 18 or 19 years old rode a skateboard near Riverside Drive and Lincoln Street, said Sgt. Saul Gonzalez. . . He approached a 35-year-old woman from behind, grabbed her backside and fled. . . About 3:25 p.m. Friday, police believe the same man was near Palm and Hill avenues when he approached a 13-year-girl. He also grabbed her, Gonzalez said. . . A 29-year-old woman was attacked similarly about 4:30 p.m. Sept. 3 near Lincoln Street and East Lake Avenue, Gonzalez said.
We don’t even know what to say. There are some sick people rolling around out there.
The skateboard outreach program in Kabul, Afghanistan, Skateistan, lost four kids (including one of their skate instructors, Khorshid pictured right) this weekend (September 8, 2012) when a teenage suicide bomber attacked near NATO headquarters at the entrance of Camp Eggers, according to a story on NPR.com.
“From the start, Khorshid (whose name translates to ‘happy’ in English) stood apart with a tough, cheeky and sensitive personality, smiling no matter what troubles she had to deal with day-to-day,” the program reports. “She knew what she wanted in life and wasn’t afraid to fight for it despite having more responsibilities and sorrows than a child should ever have.” . . Nawab, 17, also died. He was one of the first boys in the program and was known as having one of best kickflips. . . Parwana was Khorshid’s younger sister. She was just 8-years-old. Assad, the program says, was not a skater but he was family and well known at the skatepark.
The Taliban was reportedly targeting the “CIA” in the blast. Our thoughts are with the families of the four kids who were killed and with the entire Skateistan organization.
Carlos Salas, a 20-year-old skateboarder from Laguna Nigel, California was hit and killed by “an alleged hit-and-run driver” according to a story on CBSlocal.com.
The accident happened just before 4 a.m. on Golden Lantern and Marina Hills Drive. . . Authorities said Carlos Salas was on his skateboard when he was hit and dragged 25 feet by the car. . . He was found in the road and taken to the hospital, where he later died.
Orange County Sheriff’s investigators say the young victim was skateboarding home from a friend’s place around 3:48 a.m. when black 1998 Nissan Maxima plowed into him, dragging him southbound along Golden Lantern …
The Nissan, which was later found abandoned, is registered to a man in Dana Point, California, however no arrests have been made.
Two skateboarders were arrested August 24, 2012 in Everett, Washington for skateboarding where skateboarding is not allowed. The best part of the story is the write-up the event got in the police report, according to a story on Heraldnet.com. Here’s how the overzealous, pistol-waving bicycle cop described the interaction:
The officer grabs his bicycle, and the chase is on. While additional officers converge on the area, the officer catches the boarders. Surprisingly, they refuse to comply with his order to stop and a struggle is on. The officer takes one boarder to the ground, but looks up as the second pulls his board back to use as a bat. The officer transitions to his sidearm, and it is a skateboard versus gun standoff. Supporting officers arrive and immediately assist the second boarder to the ground.
Always be cautious when an officer “transitions to his sidearm.” As for the skaters, they’re “in county lock for investigation of obstruction.”
