Murder charges against Charles Richard Dobson, Jr. (pictured right) in the stabbing death of Folly Beach, South Carolina surfer Craig Massey were dropped today before a hearing was even held.
The case was scheduled for a preliminary hearing Tuesday to determine whether there was sufficient probable cause to bring the matter to trial. Instead, the hearing was canceled and the charges dismissed. . . . Andy Savage, one of Dobson’s lawyers, said the Solicitor’s Office made the right call, much to the relief of Dobson and his family. “We’re certainly not surprised by the action taken by the solicitor, which we think was appropriate.”
Dobson, who is from a prominent area family, claimed he acted in self defense.
Massey’s friend were not happy by the dismissal.
It’s very disappointing, and I don’t think it’s right that (Dobson) was let off with no accountability at all,” said Nancy Hussey, a friend of Massey and director of the Eastern Surfing Association. “This whole thing is just really sad. It’s such a tragedy.”
Some say the entire altercation was because of a love triangle between the two men and a 19-year-old girl named Mary Whilden Hills.

Guess sometimes people rob banks just to keep living their stylish lives. Like this guy in Temple Terrace, Florida who robbed a Wachovia bank today by implying that he had a gun.
The robber is described as a white male, late 20’s to early 30’s, 5′ 10″ – 6; tall with a short goatee wearing blue jeans, a baseball hat with the letters RVCA on the front, a long-sleeved white shirt with blue and pink stripes carrying an olive-green shoulder bag.
Nice hat. Actually, he looks kind of familiar? Anyone know him?

South Carolina surfer Craig Massey, 20, (pictured above) was stabbed to death on July 2, 2008 in the home of Charles Richard Dobson, Jr.,19. Dobson who is charged with murder and two counts of assault and battery with intent to kill claims he acted in self defense.
“These people broke into my house and assaulted me,” Dobson told Charleston County Magistrate Mary Holmes at his bond hearing Thursday night. . . His attorney, Margie Pizarro, later said that Dobson was at home with his younger brother and another person when several people entered the home. She said they were not guests and were not invited into the residence.
Many people can’t figure out how it could have happened:
“Everyone was completely shocked by what happened,” Nancy Hussey, director of the Eastern Surfing Association, said. “Craig was so friendly and well-mannered. He was a very sweet guy.”
The only connection appears to be a 19-year-old girl named Mary Whilden Hills who both Massey and Dobson reportedly dated. (Hills was wounded in the incident”)
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 2, 2008.

Troubled Utah mom Alicia Blood (who might not look too bad with a little makeup) is in court because she allegedly hit her 16-year-old son in the head with his own skateboard and then tried to run him down with her car.
Witnesses say the mother, Alicia Blood, and her 16-year-old son were arguing at a Tooele skate park last Tuesday when she hit him in the head with his skateboard. . . . They called police when they say the teen tried to leave and the mother got into her car, drove over the curb and chased the boy across the grass. . . . Police say she hit the boy with her car, got out and yelled at him again, then drove away.
She is being charged with “aggravated assault and child abuse.” Looks like the kid won this argument pretty handily.

The stories surrounding the Taiwanese fishing vessel Ho Tsai Fa No.18 (which looks not unlike the pirate ship from The Life Aquatic) are getting stranger and stranger as the days roll on, according to WAtoday.com.
Police have described the vessel as a crime scene, confirming its captain may have been murdered. Taiwanese investigators have arrived in Bali to carry out their own inquiry. . . . A flotilla of small fishing boats failed to refloat the 35-metre fishing vessel yesterday and Thursday. It is believed surfing companies [Rip Curl?] and the boat’s owner paid cash to local officials to hire a powerful tugboat, but it never appeared.

Dogtown legend and North Shore charger Jay Adams was released from the Federal Correctional Institution in Sheridan, Oregon today (July 7, 2008) according to a post by PoolSnob on the Fuel.tv website.
Bussed to Portland and flown to LAX, Jay will be spending a few months at a halfway home in Southern California before moving in with his wife, Alisha, and their toddler daughter, Venice. He’s also been offered a job as facilities manager at Hurley headquarters in Costa Mesa. For the time being, Jay says he’s going to stay put in Southern California. Probably a wise choice, since the frontier of Hawaii’s North Shore can make things tough for people who often find themselves surrounded by their personal demons.
We’re hoping he can pull this one off. Someone with so much natural talent should not spend any more time in prison.

How’s this for heard it from a friend who, heard from a friend who? The sfist is reporting that unaesthetic is posting that the two pieces of Barry McGee art featured in the picture above were stolen from the SF RVCA store.
The above two pieces of art were stolen from the SF RVCA store two days ago (not during the opening). They are from permanent/private collections and, without going into detail, have a great deal of sentimental value to the artists.
If you have any information about this, or means of having the artwork returned – there will be absolutely no questions asked and no legal efforts made to follow up on you or any involved parties. They just want the pieces back. You may contact me privately (art@unaesthetic.net), any of the RVCA staff (415-701-7822), or set up an anonymous third party to communicate through.
That pretty much sums it up. By the way, we love stories that allow us to tag them Art, Crime, Fashion. It just seems to right.
