Tahoe resorts Sierra-at-Tahoe and Northstar-at-Tahoe had their giving gloves on this season as the two resorts donated more than $200,000 to charitable organizations according to a story in the Tahoe Daily Tribune.
We maintain this tradition of donating both to community organizations and to national organizations because it’s the right thing to do as a member of the Tahoe community and the global community,” said John Rice, general manager of Sierra-at-Tahoe resort.

Ross Rebagliati, the first snowboarder to ever win an Olympic gold medal has finally settled his two-year old legal dispute with CTV the creators of the TV show Whistler . Apparently, Ross felt he should be paid because he thought a character on the show was based on him.
“I am the only Canadian Olympic snowboard gold medalist, with blue eyes, blonde hair who lives in Whistler,” said Rebagliati in a statement. “The similarities between my personality and the central Whistler program character Beck MacKaye are obvious.
“I am glad I was able to get my message out, as I have worked very hard on my image since returning home from Nagano. I am grateful that CTV has taken this matter seriously and I look forward to working more closely with them in the future.”
Many may not remember (as the show was cancelled after two seasons) that Whistler also included the acting talents of Brandy Ledford (aka The former Mrs. Damian Sanders).
According to a story in Pique News Magazine, the details of the settlement were not released, but Ross is looking forward to working with the Canadian TV network when the Olympics come to Vancouver.

We don’t really know what this means, but Vtech, the maker of cordless phones has a new product out that is “inspired by skateboard and snowboard designs” whatever that means.
We guess that means large, loud graphics all over every surface of the phone, because, you know, that’s what the kids are loving these days.

Volcom, Inc. (NASDAQ: VLCM) shares are soaring more than 25% midday Thursday on practically five times trading volume after first quarter results and an analyst price target upgrade.
The California-based clothing and accessory maker that sells products under the brand Volcom has added more than $100 million in market capitalization after reporting a 70.4% increase in first quarter net income. Net income rose to $9.3 million, or 38 cents per share, from $5.5 million, or 22 cents per share, on a 58.5% increase in revenues. Even with this drastic sales growth, Volcom managed to increase gross profit slightly to 52.4% from 52%.
Sometimes we’re glad we don’t own Volcom stock, and other times (like today) we’re bummed.

Masterminded criminal by night, pro snow and skate shred by day. Shaun While’s Colorado arraignment has been moved to May 2, 2008. Then he will face the music for the heinous crime of “setting off a fire extinguisher at the Beaver Run Resort in Breckenridge,” according to The Aspen Times.
If Kobe Bryant is any guide, Colorado courts are pretty tough on athletes. Hopefully, things will go easier for Mr. White.

According to the Houston Chronicle William M. Barnum Jr., a director of Zumiez Inc. just bought 54,937 shares of Zumiez.
In a Form 4 filed with the SEC, William M. Barnum Jr. reported he bought the shares for $18.05 to $18.40 apiece on Thursday.
Wonder if he knows anything?

While we may not so sure about “The Triathlon of a New Generation” a.k.a. the Ultimate Boarder 2008, a contest in which athletes compete in snowboarding, surfing, and skateboarding with combined scoring, we are absolutely sure that the right guy won.
Carlsbadistan’s Aaron Astorga edged out pro snowboarder and ESPN commentator Todd Richards and rolled away with a check for $30,000.
“It was an amazing event and everyone had a great time,” said Ultimate Boarder™ champion, Aaron Astorga. “The contest organizers did an unbelievable job of bringing all of the surfers, skaters and snowboarders together and I know a lot of us are already looking forward to next year’s contest.”

In an email sent out to Transworld Media employees on the morning of April 18, 2008 Group Publisher Jeff Griffing announced that after six months on the job he would be leaving Transworld Media and moving east (the second time in the last year that he has quit and moved).
My wife and I have decided to leave southern California to raise my son Jake back east. . . .There will be rumors that I left because I’m frustrated with Bonnier, Winter Park, whatever…..none of which are true.
His replacement: former VP of Sales and long-time Transworld adman Liam Ferguson. Mr. Ferguson will have the distinction of being Transworld Media’s seventh Group Publisher in the last five years.

Writer Jeff Hemmel has a great story on the Lib Tech Skate Banana on First Tracks Online.
There’s some crazy stuff going on up in Washington State. First comes the notion that a snowboard’s edge should resemble a crinkle-cut French fry, rather than a traditional curve. The dust on crust had barely settled from that outburst when next came the idea that camber was old news, and that rocker — yes, wakeboard-like rocker — was the wave of the future.
While we all know Mike Olson is a design genius, it’s nice to see others appreciating his banana. . . tech.
