The United States of America Snowboard Association invades Copper Mountain Colorado this weekend with its normal gargantuan size, according to a story in the Summit Daily News.
The numbers speak for themselves: six days, 36 events and 1,544 competitors. So, saying that the 2009 United States of America Snowboard Association Nationals isn’t just any other snowboarding and freeskiing competition would be a bit of an understatement. . . .“This event is a different type of animal — it’s just massive,” USASA executive director Jason Toutolmin said. . . . Beginning with practice sessions on Saturday and official competition on Sunday, the 20th annual national competition kicks off on Copper Mountain, featuring some of the future stars of the sport.
Nice to see that the USASA Organization is alive and thriving. The only thing that trips us out is that they include ski events in the contest. How weird is that?

Designer Aaron Draplin was just written up in Creativity Magazine for the design work for President Obama’s American Recovery project. The story even included a Mark Welsh photo of the man himself.
Draplin, a Minneapolis College of Art and Design grad has worked as art director of Snowboarder magazine, as a senior designer at Portland’s Cinco and on his own at Draplin Design Co. since 2004. He still has ties to the slopes as graphic designer for Snowboard magazine (not to be confused with Snowboarder), and designs boards for Ride, Gnu and Lib Tech. He also does identity and collateral work for Grenade Gloves, Union Binding Co. and Coal Headwear.
Yes, he does. And everyone loves his work. Don’t they?

The Esurance Icer Air always had the trappings of an over-hyped circus side show. The faux contest began as a fun event on the snow-covered streets of San Francisco and in the hands of marketing experts quickly escalated into an example of everything that is wrong with snowboarding as grand spectacle.
Now according to a story on ESPN.com/Action it looks like the circus left town without paying the dancing bears.
Icer Air is, for all intents and purposes, out of business. As yet another major contest bites the dust, Icer Air has managed to rile up a controversy in its wake that has the 28 invite-only athletes fired up. . . The athletes will not be paid the $2,000 agreed upon fee for competing in the October 2008 event. ($5,000 each for winners of Best Trick in skiing and snowboarding.) . . . To add to the frustration, last week riders saw a $271.51 charge appear on the credit cards they put down for incidentals at the W Hotel, which Icer Air had provided according to the rider contracts. . . “First we were told that no one was going to get paid from the event. Now the riders who put their cards down for the security deposit are being charged for their hotel rooms, which were supposed to be covered. What else is the Icer Air going to take away from us?” commented athlete Tim Humphreys.

[April Fools Day Story 2009] At a press conference today Shaun White announced that he is going to ditch his runs at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver so he can focus on his acting, according to a story on Methodmag.com.
White has apparently signed a “multi-million dollar deal with Fox Searchlight Pictures to star alongside Miley Cyrus in a feature film about a snowboarder who “foils a terrorist plot to set off a dirty bomb during the Winter Olympics.”
White seemed enthusiastic not only about his new career, but also about filming alongside Miley Cyrus, who has been cast as his love interest in the upcoming blockbuster, whose working title is “White Heat”. “I can’t wait till principal photography starts, I will miss competing but I’ve been doing contests for as long as I can remember and the time is right to start a new phase of my life and career”, explained the young superstar. White’s main sponsor, Burton Snowboards, decided to continue to support him despite the “Flying Tomato’s” (as he is commonly referred to) decision to forego competitive snowboarding.
According to Methodmag, White Heat will be in theaters in early 2010 “just in time for the Winter Olympics.”

This chart was obviously designed to show how Kelly Clark won the 08/09 TTR World Snowboard Tour, but honestly, after looking at it we’re even more confused. Guess no points in the last two events really messed it up for Jamie Anderson’s sweep.

After losing nearly $77 million and being sold off last year by Quiksilver, Rossignol is doing some cost cutting of its own according to a story on France24.com.
The group. . . is to cut about 450 jobs in total. . . . Company chairman Bruno Cercley said in a statement that the layoffs were “unavoidable,” adding that the group was “determined to get back into balance in the next two years.”
That adds up to about 30 percent of their workforce.
