Burton announced yesterday they have have hired Mike Rees as CFO of Burton Corporation. Rees, who spent the last 16 years working with VF Corp, has an impressive CV including stints at both Reef and Eagle Creek. But there was one one bit of experience that we found especially interesting:
In his early days as a CFO at VF’s Outlet division, he was responsible for the financial operations of approximately 60 retail locations while taking on additional work as the General Merchandise Manager.

Apple Games has a poetic write up on Shaun White Snowboarding for the Mac.
You survey the daunting mountainside before you. Other snowboarders rocket down the slope, spraying a fine mist of powder in their wake. You strap on your snowboard, take a deep breath, and start your run, the board gliding above the snow as you pick up speed. You try a trick known as butter: you lean forward, flatten out, and then lean the other way and flatten out again, completing a 360-degree circle.
Almost makes us want to plop down at our desk and hit the shred.

We’re pretty sure there is no better place for spring shredding than Mammoth Mountain. The Unbound Main Park is still kicking with all the jumps, rails, and two halfpipes, the top of the mountain is littered with untracked big wall corn runs, and the crowds are light.
The mountain is staying open until Memorial Day, the Volcom RV just rolled into town last night for the 2009 Peanut Butter and Rail Jam Championships on Saturday April 25, 2009, so there really is no reason not to be here.

The minds behind the Toronto, Ontario, Canada blog KingShit.org have just launched a new snowboarding site named, not surprisingly King Snow. Here’s what they had to say about it:
Before we say anything else, please go visit the new snowboard site we started, called King Snow. If you think snowboarding is retarded, then don’t go. Now, on to the goods.
We’re putting them on the list because they just gave Embry Rucker a porfolio. And that’s not a bad way to kick off a new site.

The Newport Beach Film Festival begins on Friday April 24, 2009 and included in the festival is The Action Sports Film Series presented by etnies, Fuel TV, and Surfing Magazine.
Here are just a few of the 20 films and five world premieres: Echo Beach, The Lost Wave, P. Rod’s Street Dreams, Travis Rice’s That’s It, That’s All, and “The Malloys” in Waveriders.

New York Times writer Michael Brick gets looks into boardsports triathlon Ultimate Boarder and finds the intersection of marketing, action sports, novelty and a founder who just wants make money doing what he loves.
The Ultimate Boarder organizer, Tim D. Hoover, a 38-year-old amateur surfer and onetime film industry worker, described the contest as his ticket to raising his family in this easygoing beach setting 60 miles north of Los Angeles. . . .“I really wanted to make this a grassroots, bootstrap, organic thing,” he said. “I wanted to do something to inspire and create a format for the next generation of kids that grow up in this lifestyle.”
Wonder how that’s working for him? How many people, aside from the competitors, really care about a competition that is won each year by aging skateboard team managers from surf clothing companies?

A 26-year-old Whistler snowboarder is still missing after not returning from a planned overnight stay in the Whistler backcountry, according to a story on CTVBC.com.
The man, a 26-year-old resident at the resort, hiked out-of-bounds on Saturday with the intention of staying out overnight and returning Sunday. . . When he didn’t return, the man’s roommate notified Whistler RCMP and local search-and-rescue, and the search began on Monday. . . Search teams have been hampered by confusion over where the man intended to go, said RCMP spokesman Sgt. Steve Wright.
We’re just hoping that upon returning to Whistler he fell in with the Grenade crew has been on a non-stop party ever since.

Guess the indoor snowboard scene is a pretty big deal in China. That, or some smart people are thinking that introducing snowboarding to 1.3 billion people could be good for business in the coming century.
“The park was really successful last year, and we’re stoked to be working with Burton to continue this fun project,” comments Steve Zdarsky, Mellow Parks CEO. “China in general had a great winter snowboard season, with more and more locals getting into the sport. Based on the big turnout at today’s grand opening, it looks like I’m not the only one who is excited about continuing to snowboard through the summer!”
And with the world heating up, might as well figure out the whole indoor snowboarding game while they’re at it.

Vancouver, BC resident Douglas Coupland has written many fine books. Great to read, hard to remember. Polaroids From The Dead is one of our favorites. But look at what is up on the homepage of his website right now. This:
Wait a minute, aren’t those are our logos? The image is from part of a new series of art pieces titled Mom and Dad. And it reminds us of a quote from his book Microserfs:
“Should some future historian ever feel the need to duplicate a San Fracisco coffee bar circa “The Dawn of Multimedia,” they will require the following: thrashed PowerBooks covered with snowboarding and Chiquita banana stickers. . .” Douglas Coupland, Microserfs, pg. 115.
That was written in 1994. Looks like Douglas has been stuck on boardsports for quite a while now. Then again, so have we.
