Snowboarding
As if Intrawest’s financial problems are enough of a mark on the 2010 Vancouver Games, Cypress Mountain, the resort that will be hosting the snowboard events closed yesterday for lack of snow, but that’s okay. Apparently artificial snow is better. . .
Rain and warm temperatures forced Cypress Mountain, the Vancouver ski resort that will host the freestyle skiing and snowboarding events at next month’s Winter Olympics, to close Monday, but officials promise there will be plenty of snow for the Games. . . .”Right now we have all the snow that we need on the competition area,” said Tim Gayda, the vice-president of sport for the Vancouver Olympic Games Organizing Committee. “The nice thing about artificial snow is it’s more resilient and actually stands up better to this kind of weather.
Apparently, it’s Canadian super artificial snow. Right. . .

Factory Media, the parent company of Onboard, Whitelines, Kingpin, Cooler, Sidewalk, Surf Europe, and the Surfer’s Path (along with others) has fully committed to the iPhone app market with 13 different apps representing their media properties, according to a release issued today.
Users will be able to download a free trial of the magazine when they download one of the Apps from apples iTunes App store. They will then be push notified when new magazines and offers are available allowing them to purchase individual magazines or subscriptions, as well as back issues. . . The App comes with interactive page flipping, where pages follow your fingers and a zoom feature, which overcomes the inherent problem of reading magazines on the mobile devices.
The magazine apps were created in partnership with Pixel Mags. We’re found most magazine apps to be almost unuseable and annoying for all kinds of reasons, but maybe Pixel Mags has done these right. Follow the jump for all the details.

Not a whole lot was surprising about the US Snowboarding Grand Prix Slopestyle finals today at Mammoth Mountain. Chas Guldemond and Jamie Anderson, the highest qualifiers took the event as well on Sunday January 10, 2009.
“I work really hard at what I do. Since last spring I haven’t been on the podium, let alone top 5, so I’m stoked to be back up here,” Guldemond said.
Anderson was pretty stoked as well. “I’m so happy. I don’t usually do 7s. I’ve been working on them, but they’re not one of my consistent tricks. So I was proud of myself to actually step it up and try because it wasn’t a guarantee that I was going to land,” Anderson said. “I was risking it. The first one I kind of fell on, but the second one I stomped, so I’m pumped.”

The Sheriff’s Department in Big Bear, California is looking for “a white male adult, 25–30 years of age, approximately 5′10″ — 6′2″ tall, wearing a black and white jacket, black pants, and using a black snowboard” who slammed into a 9-year-old girl on January 2, 2010 leaving her with a gash to her face and a broken femur.
Hard to believe someone could run over a little girl and just ride away. The guy must already have a couple warrants. Click the image to watch the video.

It was another crazy day in the Mammoth Super Duper pipe and this time Shaun White and Gretchen Bleiler came out on top of in the US Snowboarding Grand Prix.
That makes Shaun White the second snowboarder to clinch his spot on the US Olympic Halfpipe Snowboarding team.
“I’m happy to be on the team and secure that spot. Now I can just work on my stuff and get dialed,” White said. “I was feeling great because I had a second and a first, and that’s pretty strong hold on getting on the team. But a first and a first is guaranteed, so I’m really excited.”
Earlier in the week Gretchen Bleiler told us that she wasn’t that worried. “All I have to do is do the run I know how to do,” she said.
Today it looks like she finally figured it all out.
“I feel awesome. This whole season I’ve just been trying to figure out a run for myself, and today I switched it up completely and figured out a run that I’ve never done before, and it worked for me,” Bleiler said. “It feels really good to win today and I feel so much more confident.”

Last night (January 8, 2010) the snowboarding world got together for the Portland stop of the I Am Snowboarding art show in honor of Jeff Anderson at Nemo HQ. YoBeat’s Brooke Geery was there and got all the pictures.
And as this was the only NW stop of I Am Snowboarding, pretty much everyone was there. Terry Kidwell, Dave Seoane, Jamie Lynn, the list goes on. Even Cobra Dog’s Cory Grove was enjoying reminiscing about the olden days when no one did double corks (on purpose) with the people he looked up to.

Last week when Kevin Pearce knocked himself out while training in the Park City Halfpipe he became the biggest story of the “pre-Olympic” media. Granted, it has all the trappings of Olympic drama: youth, talent, ambition, and sudden tradgedy. We can already hear the soft music, slow-motion falling snow, and soft-spoken voice over.
But for those who love and care about Danny, some of this media coverage can seem trite, annoying, and occasionally damaging. Such was the case when ABC News aired the above Olympic Hopeful In A Coma video which aired on January 5, 2009 while many of us where on the snow at Mammoth for the US Snowboarding Grand Prix.
In the report ABC News spoke to Snowboarder Magazine’s Pat Bridges who explained that progression in snowboarding pushes athletes into “going bigger, going faster, and doing more difficult tricks.” Australian Olympian Torah Bright was also quoted.
Then ABC rolled in with a live interview an “expert” named Christine Brennan, a “sports columnist” for USA Today. In about 30 seconds Brennan was able to discredit the entire sport of snowboarding saying:
This sport was added for TV ratings . . . the international Olympic committee wanted to bring a sport like this into the Olympics to try to encourage better TV ratings and viewership from a younger audience. So obviously the more extreme . . . the better it is for ratings and the better for them and their endorsements. That’s how this goes.
Old-media sports columnists are notorious for inciting readership with ignorance, and truthfully we never would have typed Ms. Brennan’s name if she had made more rational comments so great for her. On the snowboard side of things however, people got pretty riled up.
TV commentator and pro snowboarder Todd Richards was one of the first to throw what his wife called a “twitfit” .
Christine Brennan you are a hack “reporter/consultant” that should actually get real opinions and facts before reporting on “extreme sports,” he said via Twitter. , , Here is the deal on why i am pissed about this abc fiasco: i think of myself as one of the creditable mouth pieces for snowboarding on tv. i really take pride in having snowboarding being shown with integrity to the masses. i may joke and be sarcastic at times but i am….really protective of the sport that gave me a reason for being. how would a baseball player feel if i was suddenly a self proclaimed authority on what professional baseball players should be doing ? i would be strung up by my taint hairs..right ?
