Eddie Wall Is Working For The Weekend

Weekend LogoEddie Wall has signed with Bond Outerwear and Weekend Snowboards according to an announcement that went out last night just in time for day one of SIA Show in Denver.

“Our whole philosophy with our brands is to work with people, whether they are reps, riders, or our accounts, that get what we are doing and have the same passion for it that we do,” stated Dan McNamara, co-Founder of Bond Outerwear. “Eddie is a great fit for us because he is one of us, and having him as part of the family means the world to Christian and I.”

Eddie joins Heikki Sorsa and TJ Schneider on Bond and Mark Carter and Heikki on Weekend Snowboards. Sounds like the Laguna Beach, California scene is back on the up.

SIA Comes To Never Summer’s House

4366950.47For the past 20 years brothers Tim and Tracey Canaday have been making snowboards in Denver, Colorado. When Snowsports Industries of America decided that 37 years in Las Vegas was enough Canaday and the rest of the Never Summer Industries crew thought the show was finally going down in the right town, according to a Colin Bane story in Denver’s WestWord.

“I think a lot of people in the industry see leaving Las Vegas and coming to Denver as a sign that the party’s over, and maybe that’s a good thing,” Tracey Canaday says. “Vegas is a great place to have a show, for obvious reasons, but I would love for it to work and be successful here in Colorado. It makes sense on a lot of different levels to have the SIA show here. It’s a lot cheaper for our company, for one thing! But it’s also the perfect place for the snow sports industry to get down to business.”

frequency: TSJ’s Has A New Editor

74EmailLooks like Funny Feelings LLC founder Jeff Galbraith is learning to let go as Colin Wiseman, the former Managing Editor of frequency: The Snowboarder’s Journal has been promoted to editor of both the magazine and the website.

Beginning with his internship in 2007, Colin has proven to be an integral part of our growth and creative quality,” said previous Editor and current Publisher Jeff Galbraith. “His passion for freeriding, quality journalism, and the culture of snowboarding make him a perfect choice to lead frequency TSJ’s editorial into its next decade.”

Helmet Laws Coming To California Resorts?

And new bill before the California State Assembly could force California resorts to nut up regarding safety. The bill, AB 1652 was created by Dr. Dan Gregorie after the snowboarding death of his 24-year-old daughter. If passed it would require California ski resorts to do the following according to a story on ConsumerAffairs.com:

• Require each employee to wear a ski helmet.
• Adopt and enforce mandatory helmet use for all patrons age 18 years and younger.
• Prepare and post annual safety plans for public access.
• Provide accessible information regarding deaths and injuries, including the what, where, when, why and how of each incident.
• Establish standardized signage for ski-area boundaries and hazard warnings.
• Provide standardized safety padding for use at lift towers and other fixed obstacles.

None of it seems all that unreasonable especially when you see how many people died last season while riding resorts.

Rebagliati Rolls The Olympic Torch

Ross Rebagliati, the first snowboarder to ever win an Olympic Gold medal (and have it taken away and given back) took to the streets yesterday on a skateboard and carried the Olympic Torch for 300 meters near Osoyoos, BC without smoking it. According to CTV it was pretty heavy.

“That was very, very exciting, emotional,” Mr. Rebagliati, 38, said after completing his torch run on wheels, as his wife, bundled-up baby and parents tried to keep up on the side of the highway.

Rebagliati took the opportunity to talk to the media about the legalization of marijuana.

“Prohibition didn’t work; this isn’t working,” he said after running with the torch, which some have even said resembles a giant joint. . . “You look at the numbers; it’s not helping by throwing people in jail. I think the thing we can focus on is helping people with addictions, taking a proactive view. . . How can we help people rather than throw them in jail?” Mr. Rebagliati was jubilant in his post-skateboard moment, and either forgot about his party’s edict that he not speak to the news media, or chose to ignore it.

Vancouver’s Olympic Halfpipe In Progress

Arena Snowparks is making moves with the Olympic halfpipe at Cypress Mountain and it looks like they have a bit of snow to work with in spite of what we’ve been hearing lately, according to the snow park builder’s blog.

ASP crews have started construction on the halfpipe at Cypress Mountain, site of the Olympic snowboard events. Despite some challenging weather conditions in Vancouver area the pipe is starting to take shape with the right wall pushed and step out and the left wall currently being pushed. Construction on the pipe will continue throughout the next two weeks as crews ensure that every available flake of snow sees it’s way into the pipe.

We’ve also heard from reliable sources that Cypress Mountain is buying snow from Mt. Baker, trucking it over the border and using it to build the pipe. With 21 days to finish it up, it would appear that things are moving in the right direction. We’ll be checking back to see the progress.

Torah Bright Doubles Down?

When we first met Torah Bright she was a cute 14-year-old rolling around the world with Danny Kass and the Dingo, seemingly without supervision. Obviously, her parents had a lot more trust in her than we would have. But it looks like they were right, according to a story in the New York Times.

“Torah has the athleticism and the technical ability to win; she clearly knows she is the favorite going into all of this,” said Bright’s agent, Circe Wallace. “I’m never worried about her being grounded. She’s focused in a positive way you don’t see from many in snowboarding, much less other sports. It’s refreshing for sure. . . “What’s coming up could be the perfect storm for making Torah a star beyond snowboarding. She has the talent, the personality, and the visibility is now coming. She’s poised to take off.”

And brother/coach Ben Bright says she’s got a double cork down. And as we all know, that’s gold medal talk.
