Kingvale Snow Park Loses Its Lease

by The Editors on October 7, 2010

Kingvale LogoKingvale, one of smoothest little park-only mountains in the world, announced this week that they have lost the lease on their property at the side of Highway 80 near Northern California’s Donner Summit. They explain on their blog:

Today is a SAD SAD Day for Kingvale. We have lost our lease on our current home. Our landlord and us just can’t seem to get along. We are left with no other options than to pack up our circus and try to find a new home. We have too much equipment to list, but we are completely turn-key all we need is some dirt/snow to put it on. . . If you have a spot that might work to be the new Kingvale please email us at info@railbuilders.com. We will answer all questions to come. In the future we are just trying to save our DREAM. Please bare with us.

We know a lot of people in Sacramento, Auburn, and Grass Valley who are going to be seriously disappointed. Spots like Kingvale help introduce snowboarding to thousands of kids who otherwise could not afford snowboarding and we hope Kingvale can find a new home.

Transworld Media Launches TWSnow + For iPad

by The Editors on October 6, 2010

Twsnow IpadTransworld Media launched a new application for the Apple iPad today called TransWorld Snowboarding+. We’re not exactly how it is different from the digital magazine subscriptions Transworld sells on the Zinio platform, but it reportedly includes the following:

. . . a totally re-designed and enhanced version of the content from the mag that’s fully interactive. The image display is super vivid, its got exclusive embedded video, and the content flows like you’ve never seen in print. Navigation is simple, urging you to dig deeper into every issue. . . Swipe left and right to move among stories. Swipe down to read more. Jump between sections by swiping with two fingers, or through the pop-up Contents panel—just push up with two fingers at the bottom of the screen to access Contents and Issues. Tap the screen to make the text disappear and focus solely on the big, beautiful images. Tap it again to bring the text back.

The iPad is still too big and heavy for out tastes and you know what we think about magazine apps, but if there’s an iPad at your house, be sure to load this up and let us know how it looks. Issues are only $2.99 a piece, or nearly four times the price of a Zinio subscription to the same mag.

Source Interlink Picks Up Grind Networks

by The Editors on October 6, 2010

Sport-Grind-TmSource Interlink Media, the parent company of ASG (publishers of Surfing, Surfer, Snowboarder, and Skateboarder magazines) announced today that they have purchased Grind Networks including GrindTV.com, Newschoolers.com, Ridemonkey.com, 411vm.com, Wetsand.com, affiliate sales aggregation sites Snowboarder.com, Motocross.com, Skateboard.com, and entertainment site Stupidvideos.com.

“The addition of Grind Networks to our portfolio demonstrates our corporate strategic commitment to finding and investing in the right partners who have the vision to deliver targeted content, across multiple platforms, to our enthusiast consumers,” said Michael L. Sullivan, Chief Executive Officer of Source Interlink Companies, Inc. . . With this move, former Grind Networks CEO Erik Hawkins will oversee all digital sales and marketing efforts for the new group; President/COO Greg Morrow will direct all technical and digital product development aspects of the business. The two founded Grind Networks in 2005 after serving as executives at Yahoo!, CitySearch and Launch Media. Both will report directly to Norb Garrett, Senior Vice President and Group Publisher of SIM’s ASG.

Those who follow along will remember that many of these websites were purchased and/or created by Wasserman Media Group in something called Sportnet. That site was WMG’s last attempt to corner the market on digital action sports. When things turned out poorly there the sites were then rolled into GrindTV with money from Softbank Capital March 19, 2009.

It will be interesting to see what magic ASG’s Norb Garrett can work with these sites as none (aside from Newschoolers in ski and Ridemonkey in MTB) have yet to have gained any authentic traction with either advertisers or readers. And while the domains snowboarder.com, motocross.com, and skateboard.com obviously have potential, this whole deal seems like a rather complicated, expensive way to upgrade a couple URLs.

Follow the jump for the rest of the release.

Google Thinks Rabbit Is A Burton Snowboard

by The Editors on October 6, 2010

NabaztagIn testing Google’s new Google Goggles visual search update to the the Google iPhone app the UK’s PC Pro got some strange results, according to a post on their website.

My colleague Nicole Kobie has a defunct Nabaztag rabbit sitting on her desk. . . Nevertheless, it’s a distinctive product and one that Goggles should have no problem identifying. Should. Inexplicably, it returned a search result for Burton snowboards. Verdict: miss.

Wonder what kinds of strange Google tricks Burton has been playing lately?

On-Hill Texting Gloves Reviewed

by The Editors on October 6, 2010

These new Isotoner Smart Touch Gloves make it possible to text and have obviously changed Sean Black’s life, but seriously, we’re not really interested in handling our electronic life-source while hanging 50 feet in the air with gloves on. They’re just too slippery. On the other hand, the Isotoner are on sale at JCPenny for $29.99.

Fortress Hoping For Whistler Blackcomb IPO

by The Editors on October 5, 2010

Whistler LogoThanks to $1.4 billion in dept Fortress Investment Group LLC has been looking for buyers for their Intrawest properties almost since buying the company in August of 2006.

The sales most often spoken about is Whistler Blackcomb (which was nearly auctioned off by creditors during the 2010 Olympics). There were rumors from the Wall Street Journal regarding the attempted sale to Russian billionaire Vladimir Potanin, and another included “oil mogul” Murray Edwards (owner of Fernie Alpine Resort, Kimberley Alpine Resort, Stoneham Mountain Resort and Mont-Sainte-Anne), but none of them were interested in paying what Fortress believes the mountain is worth. Now Fortress is reportedly trying to take the resort public through an IPO, according to a story in The Globe & Mail.

But the well-known name of Whistler may be an easier sell for an audience of retail investors, especially after the successful Olympics at the site last winter. As a result, an IPO is now the favoured option, sources said. . . “They didn’t like the valuations they got [from other buyers] so they will try the IPO market,” said a second person familiar with the situation.

When you can’t get smart money might as well go retail, but It’s difficult to imagine a scenario where this turns out well no matter how sexy Canadian resorts are.

Zeal’s Heads Up Display Goggles

by The Editors on October 1, 2010

Zeal Recon

As if we weren’t spending enough time in front of our computers or staring down into our iPhones, the Vancouver based goggle company Recon Instruments introduces their new Transcend Goggles in collaboration with Zeal Optics. The goggles are apparently the first to be “GPS-enabled.”

Transcend provides real-time feedback including speed, latitude/longitude, altitude, vertical distance travelled, total distance travelled, chrono/stopwatch mode, a run-counter, temperature and time. It is also the only pair of goggles in the world that boasts GPS capabilities, USB charging and data transfer, and free post-processing software all with a user-friendly, addictive interface.

The goggles will be available October 10, 2010 and retail for US$499 (click here to buy a pair). Now, if they only had a video in for our iPhone display, we’d be set for the winter.
