The Digital Skateboarding Relaunch

by The Editors on December 17, 2010

Digital SkateYesterday kept hearing about Bill Weiss and the relaunch of Digital Skateboarding. Yes, the very same Digital Skateboarding from way, way back in 1999. Here’s what Weiss and the crew are saying:

Ten years after we produced our first video, we are thrilled to release digitalskateboarding.com, a new website bringing you video parts and interviews with the best pro and am skaters from around the world. . . Our early efforts were often wild and hardly perfect, but our videos quickly became synonymous with great skateboarding, partying and sense of humor.

Seems like they’re jumping right back in where they left off. And it looks good. Check it.

Under A Bridge: The Kingshighway Skate Park

by The Editors on December 17, 2010

4D06A1F23Ae83.Preview-300St. Louis, Missouri has it’s own DIY skateboard park at the corner of Kingshighway and Bischoff. St. Louis Today gets all the details.

The skatepark started out guerrilla-style in 2009 when a friend of DelCortivo’s, Kyle Crandall, was scouting urban skate locations. Crandall found the bridge and started pouring concrete under the south end of the bridge, attempting to build a bowl. . . Word leaked fast in the tight-knit skate community, and soon enough dozens of skateboarders were helping convert the seamy underside of a bridge into something practical. Jones said the scene under the bridge before work got started was borderline post-apocalyptic. . . Burning mattresses, drug users, squatters and extensive trash and graffiti were all part of the environment. . . Most of that left with the arrival of the skatepark, although keeping the area graffiti-free requires constant vigilance.

Urban renewal thanks to skateboarding.

Trial Begins For Driver In Towing Death

by The Editors on December 15, 2010

The driver of the car which towed skateboarder Willy Tracy, 17, to his death in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada on June 12, 2010, went on trial this morning and is charged with “criminal negligence,” according to a story The News.

“On June 12, 2010, a person – Willy Tracy – was on a skateboard and he grabbed onto a motor vehicle, a Rav Four, on Willow Street, New Glasgow,” Pink said, adding that the car was being driven by his client. . . “Mr. Tracy fell while he had a hold of the Rav Four, and suffered multiple injuries which resulted in his death.”

Skateboard towing sucks for everyone involved.

Jason Lee To Shredd TV

by The Editors on December 14, 2010

Jason Lee 28779Details on Jason Lee’s new skateboarding TV project Shredd (produced by Jack Black) is sneaking out thanks to a post on Deadline Hollywood.

Shredd centers on Jon Johnsonsen (Lee) who, as a 17-year-old superstar skateboarder in 1985 was on top of the world until a risky skate move landed him in a coma for 25 years. When he wakes up, he is 42 but stuck in the 1980s mindset of a teenage boy and must cope with all the changes in his life.

Now that, friends, is comedy gold.

Jamie Brisick Profiles Stacy Peralta

by The Editors on December 13, 2010

Peralta PoolA week ago, Stacy Peralta was inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame, so it seem rather serendipitous that we would stumble onto writer Jamie Brisick’s recently posted profile about the man at home in Santa Monica (of course).

Stacy Peralta is an award-winning film director, former Z-Boy, and lifelong surfer. He’s also an avid collector of rare succulents and aloes. That this fetishistic hobby of his can be traced back to the days of empty pools and raffish Dogtowners seems either terribly ironic, or totally obvious. Southern California backyard pools were often surrounded by cactus and succulent gardens, and Stacy was always looking beyond the coping.

Read the rest for a look into the mind of one of skateboarding most iconic artists.

Tony Hawk Still Relevant To Gamers

by The Editors on December 8, 2010

TonyhawkshredActivision would like to remind everyone that even though Tony Hawk Shred had a less than stellar first week on the shelves that it’s a little early to “close the book on Tony Hawk Shred,” according to CEO Eric Hirshberg, quoted on Computer And Video Games, because they are marketing the game for holiday gift giving and we’re done with that yet.

“The one question that I can answer, and remarkably so, is that Tony Hawk does really still have relevance and tremendous appeal for people,” Hirshberg added. “He is a lasting icon. He has that Michael Jordan-ish or Jordan-esque staying power, seemingly.”

In spite of the gaming press jumping on the video skateboarding is dead bandwagon, we still like him. So please, buy a game and keep Tony’s video party rolling.
