North Carolina skateboarder Jamie Hargrave, 28, went out for a roll on June 3, 2011, while his 6-year-old son Jamie cruised along beside him on a scooter. No one is really sure what happened, but Hargrave crashed and ended up with serious head injuries, according to a story in the Roanoke Rapids Daily Herald.
Hargrave was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center, then airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, Horton said, with injuries to his head. . . “He has bivascular skull fractures, cerebral edema and intercranial hemorrhaging,” Horton said. . . While Hargrave has since regained consciousness, he doesn’t recognize family members, though he has made progress. . . “He can tell you who he is now,” Horton said. “That’s a plus because he couldn’t a week ago.”
Hargrave was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and now his mother Lisa Horton has a message to other mothers:
“If he would have been wearing a helmet, he’d be home today,” Horton said. “Buy your kids helmets. If you’ve got a grown kid who likes to skateboard, get them a helmet.”
Seventy-one-year-old Ron Cofall should be an inspiration to anyone thinking they might be getting to old for skateboarding.
According to a Justin Paprocki story in the Island Packet. Cofall began skateboarding last year at 70 years old when his grandson wanted to go to the Bristol Skatepark in Hilton Head, South Carolina. And he hasn’t stopped yet, even though he’s gotten broke off several times.
He’s learned from his mistakes, the only catch being his mistakes happen with a hard fall on the concrete. He’s broken his wrist, knocked his head so hard it damaged a retina, hurt his neck to the point he needed a brace, and done other damage that has required overnight stays in a hospital. . . Getting hurt isn’t a deterrent. It’s just an impediment to doing what he wants. He’s had spills in motocross and wipeouts windsurfing. It hasn’t stopped him before. So this comes as no surprise to his family. . . “We do worry about him getting hurt,” said his daughter-in-law, Jackie. “But he doesn’t want to quit. And we respect that.”
Apparently, 70 is the new 40, not to mention that few pads offer more protection than a full Depends adult diaper.

Tomorrow (June 18, 2011) at La Gaîté lyrique in Paris, France a huge skateboarding culture show titled Public Domaine will be opening.
Public Domaine, with an “e”, is the homage paid to an art form which has chosen a plank and four wheels as its medium of self-expression with which to reclaim the public domain and to reinterpret it with its twists and whorls on the asphalt. Because “skateboarding” is much more than just a sport, an activity, a hobby or a means of transport… Over the years, it has forged itself a rich, evolving aesthetic and transformed itself in the course of its encounters with artists – from designers to musicians – who have taken it as their traveling companion.
The show features art by Neck Face, Yogi Proctor, Adam Wallacavage, Donny Miller, Deanna Templeton, Cleon Peterson, Michael Burnett, Mike O’Meally; music by Dinosaur Jr, Tommy Guerrero, Mix Master Mike, Ray Barbee, McRad, Lords of The Underground, Boys Noize, Antipop Consortium, Busy P, Bad Shit, and The Goat, plus skate demos from a slew of teams. The show runs from June 18 – August 7, 2011. Click the link for more info.
To promote the launch of his new KA-One shoe from ConverseKenny Anderson kickflipped into a nose manual in LA and didn’t stop until he got to Las Vegas, or at least that’s the hook to the film LA to Vegas.
We can say this: Kenny spent like a year on his front wheels for this one (even ding some skateboard towing behind a bus to show how tough he is). Watch and you’ll see what we mean. . . For more info on how Converse is launching this shoe follow the jump. [click to continue…]
Pat Doyle, 53, an allegedly drunk PR representative for the city of Brick Township, New Jersey (and former hockey coach), is now being charged with “with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, making an unsafe lane change and driving an unregistered vehicle” after mowing down and killing 19-year-old skateboarder Anthony Briffa (pictured right)on May 10, 2011 in a head-on collision, according to a story in Asbury Park Press.
Doyle was headed southbound on Jordan Road and attempting to pass another vehicle and entered the northbound lane, where authorities believe the teen was in the lane of travel, near the shoulder, when he was struck, investigators said at the time of the incident.
What, no vehicular manslaughter? Our thoughts are with Briffa’s family and friends. And we hope Doyle gets a proper punishment if he indeed is guilty.
We’ll admit it: some of our favorite Ed Templeton photos have been of kids kissing, or smoking, or doing any number of other things that they’re not exactly supposed to be doing. Now it appears that New York City’s Half Gallery will be presenting a showing of Ed’s photos co-curated by Arty Nelson titled Teenagers Kissers.
Teeange Kissers runs June 23 – July 25, 2011. Half Gallery is located at 208 Forsyth St, New York City. ORSYTH STREET

Last night (June 12, 2011) Girl Skateboards in association with the Levi’s Film Workshop premiered their new Ty Evans directed short 3-D skateboard film Unbeleafable along with a retrospective of Girl films from the past at Los Angeles, California’s Downtown Independent Theater.
Afterwards, director Ty Evans and various members of the crew took to the stage to answer questions from the audience. The panel included Vincent Alvarez, one of the film’s skaters; Ian Spohr, the film’s stereographer; Marc Ritzema, the Director of Photography; Roham Rahmanian, 3D Producer; and Federico Vitetta, the film’s producer. The team discussed how the concept of the film came to fruition, the custom-created score from M83 and how they were able to pull off an incredible project in a short amount of time.
Following the Q&A everyone went to the roof top for a small, chill after party. Follow the jump for more of Mikey Tnasuttimonkol’s photos from the evening. [click to continue…]
