Tampa Police Picking On 15 Year Old

by The Editors on May 23, 2016

You have to wonder how the Tampa Police Department can protect its citizens when their officers can’t even throw a waif of a 15-year-old kid on the ground without tripping themselves and falling in the gutter. Seriously. Is that cop impaired?

The teen is 15 years old, stands about 5’4″ and weighs maybe 120 pounds, said Patrick van Kampen, 18, who was part of about a dozen skateboarders skating on a public street that was closed off to traffic in downtown Tampa on Saturday. He also said there were no signs forbidding skateboarding.

It seems like cops are always roughest on the people who can’t fight back. Cop #1 is likely blaming the kid (who was reportedly held for 12 hours) for his sore back. For more on the story, click the link.

Signal Pours A Urethane Snowboard

by The Editors on May 20, 2016

Hey, look what urethane did for skateboarding. It created the modern era. Somehow we don’t think it’s going to do the same for snowboarding, but we can’t fault Signal Snowboards from trying. Check it out in the latest episode of Every Third Thursday: Pour It On.

Barros & Mountain Rule The Vans Pool

by The Editors on May 16, 2016

Vans threw their biggest party of the year this weekend (12th Annual Vans Pool Party, May 13-15, 2016) and Lance MountainPedro Barros, and Darren Navarette walked away the weekend’s biggest winners.

Underlining an epic journey of Combi pool domination, the unstoppable Pedro Barros demonstrated another breathtaking feat of talent, blasting through huge airs in lightning fast runs to win his third Pool Party championship title to date. Rising star and pool ripper Cory Juneau sneaks in second with a game-changing final run, while Bucky Lasek utilized a clean, technical approach to secure third. Finally, closing out the Masters division, Darren Navarette took flight and put together a flawless run in classic Navs style, ousting last year’s winner Bruno Passos.

It’s always to good to see people doing real stuff (not that sitting in front of a monitor and copying and pasting links isn’t real). Josh Oldenburg makes surfboards by hand in San Diego, California and he seems to enjoy it. We enjoy watching him. You probably will, too. Click the arrow why don’t you.

(Editors’ Note: it’s pronounced “Salvador” in case you were wondering. Vowels still aren’t cool in some circles.)

Syrmo: A Skateboarding Activity Tracker

by The Editors on May 11, 2016

Skaters who also run or ride bikes know of the addictive nature of an app called Strava. Well, now skateboarders can track their own action on a similar app called Syrmo.

With the addition of some tech that mounts underneath your truck (including an accelerometer, gyroscope, and barometer) Syrmo will record the motion of your skateboard and save it on a smartphone app for logging, sharing, comparing and review.

So far, we haven’t seen any action trackers that work well enough to be useful, but maybe this is the one. We look forward to trying it.

The Dreaded Freeway Skateboarding Epidemic

by The Editors on May 10, 2016

Was it the iconic Go Skateboarding Day image that caused all this? Or, could it be that Southern California traffic has gotten so bad that people refuse to simply sit in their cars for hours at a time. Having had personal experience with the California Highway Patrol and their strangely flawed belief that they do indeed personally own the freeways of California we can say this, just don’t get caught. If you don’t believe us, ask Don Brown.

Nas’ Skateboard Movie: The Land

by The Editors on May 9, 2016

It’s turning into a board movie summer. Here’s a tease of the film The Land produced by Nas and pretty well received at Sundance, according to a story on The Root.

The movie follows the turbulent lives of four teens who have aspirations of becoming professional skateboarders but who find that the streets of Cleveland aren’t the easiest to break from. Lendeborg stars as Cisco, a teen who uses skateboarding as an escape mechanism but lands in trouble with his friends when they steal and sell Molly (the drug) to raise money for a skateboarding competition.

The film stars The Wire’Michael K. Williams, Erykah Badu, Machine Gun Kelly and Sons of Anarchy’s Kim Coates, along with Jorge Lendeborg Jr. The Land is scheduled to be released on July 29, 2016.
