Madsteez Interviewed On The Hundreds

by The Editors on March 24, 2014

Madsteez Eazy 0

We don’t know the guy. Never met him, but we’ve always been huge fans of Mark Paul Deren’s art. And we’re always wondering how and why he was able to do all that’s he’s done over the past decade. Now, thanks to an interview with The Hundreds, we have a little look into who Madsteez is and what moves him to create his amazing, comic, insightful, loud, stunning pieces.

If you call getting a D in Art 101 at Cal State Long Beach going to art school then I was definitely classically trained. Before that, I took high school art class but it was only to get an easy A. It actually wasn’t until I started making art for absolutely no purpose at all. From there everything just naturally happened. I got to choose what I wanted to paint and how I wanted to do it. The more I’ve personally grow as an artist, the more I’ve tried to strip my process and simplify my pieces.

LUUV: Image Stabilization For Us

by The Editors on March 17, 2014

We’ve all shot terrible, jittery video. In fact, most of us do it all the time. Finding a solid, inexpensive rig to smooth things out, however is nearly impossible. Now, a crew from Berlin, Germany is working to create the LUUV system specifically for use with GoPros, iPhones, and other small cameras and best yet, make it affordable and modern.

LUUV is a camera stabilizer for all action cams and smart phones that enables you to shoot shake-free footage while you are in motion. Thanks for a full three-axis-stabilization, LUUV separates the motion of your hand from the camera. You hand is moving, but the camera is not. The outcome: flowing, steady footage instead of shaky videos.

Co-founders Felix Kochbeck and Tim Kirchner are launching their product on IndieGoGo and hope to raise $50,000 in the next 53 days. If you’d like to help them out, click the link and be one of the first to get the LUUV when they begin production.

HUF + Modernica = Nice Green Chair

by The Editors on March 6, 2014

Modernica is our favorite LA based furniture fabricators (in fact we sleep with them every night) and the fact that they’ve just done a collab deal with HUF is pretty cool. And even though the chair is green, Keith was nice enough to keep the pot leaf off the logo. . .

by The Editors on March 3, 2014

Marchmad 2014Our favorite logo battle returns this March for 2014 as Scott Hultgren hits us back with Valhalla’s March Logo Madness.

The bracket competition takes its cues from the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament but instead of a bunch of guys running around for three hours, logos from brands like Quiksilver, Volcom, Indpendent Trucks, Girl, Burton, Nike, Adidas and Obey go head to head for a day. Whoever gets the most votes moves on to the next day to battle the next logo.

And who wins this contest is completely decided by online voters. That’s you! If you’d like to take part, click here for the first week’s battle, then tune back in each day during the month for another round of competition. This year’s madness kicks off with Surfing, following each week by skateboarding, snowboarding, lifestyle, and the Grand Royale winner take all battle the last week of March. JDK And The Theory Of Re-Evolution

by The Editors on November 20, 2013

MichaelGiovanna-MT_0The Burlington, Vermont based design firm JDK has probably done more to shape the way we all view snowboarding than any other company ever. Their years of shaping the branding and visual design at Burton Snowboards have made them almost synonymous with the world’s largest snowboard company. And that’s only part of it. Look around in the action sports industry and JDK alumni are everywhere.

Lately, numerous changes have been shifting the balance of the company founded by Michael Jager, Giovanna di Paola Jager and David Kemp 27-years-ago, according to a Kathryn Flagg story in Seven Days. But what exactly those changes will mean for the principals are still a bit vague. One thing is certain, David Kemp has left the building.

The transformation is happening quickly, more than just the typical ebb and flow of business. Kemp declined to speak with Seven Days for this story; his two-line email response to inquiries read: “No, I am not available to be interviewed. I am no longer involved with JDK.” . . . That’s a monumental change. Again and again in interviews about JDK, former clients, friends and employees pointed to the partnership between Jager and Kemp as a main reason for JDK’s success. Their right brain/left brain pairing was primarily responsible for running the firm, especially after Giovanna Jager — a brilliant designer herself — stepped away from day-to-day business to raise the couple’s three children.

Michael Jager tells Seven Days that there will be official news after the  New Year. Until then, just read this story and then come to your own conclusions. It’s much more fun that way.

The Peugeot Design Lab Surfboard

by The Editors on July 1, 2013

Bex-London-1-590X394

The team at France’s Peugeot Design Lab has re-imagined the surfboard, according to a post on NewLaunches.com.

The concept surfboard uses the ‘coupe tranche’ (clean cut) design theme and is sleek, suave and eye-catching. This one reminded us of an extremely sharp and shiny blade and the front of the surfboard is designed to represent emotions. The back of the surfboard highlights motion and sports integrated sculpted tail fins that have been meticulously drawn out to make the board more agile and responsive. Using carbon fiber for its body while the front is made from wood, this concept surfboard, according to our imagination, also seems inspired by stealth fighter aircrafts.

What doesn’t surprise us are the lack of action photos of the board. Click the link for more images and the rest of the story.
