GoPro Having A Rough Go

by The Editors on May 9, 2016

gopro_logoNot really sure how things could be worse for GoPro. They’ve announced terrible first quarter results and delayed launching their next big product, the Karma drone, according to a story on The Verge.

[GoPro] saw its revenue drop by 49.5 percent from the same period in 2015, and it swung from a $22 million profit to a $121 million loss. The company also announced that its new drone, the Karma, will be delayed until the winter holiday. It was originally slated to be released in the first half of this year.

Yes, a $121 million loss for the quarter. We’ve never really understood the mass appeal of drones, or of GoPro cameras for that matter, so we guess we don’t find much of this recent news all that surprising. Click here for the official GoPro financials, or here for some of Jeff Harbaugh’s thoughts.

by The Editors on March 16, 2016

nixon_mission

Today (March 16, 2016), Nixon is at Switzerland’s world famous watch and jewelry expo Baselworld to rollout The Mission, their first ever smartwatch powered by Google’s Android Wear and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 2100 system-on-a-chip. In otherwords, a real-deal Android smartwatch designed specifically with action sports in mind.

The Mission features a suite of custom applications tailored to action sports, as well as industry-leading durability and a category-first 10-ATM (100 meter) water-resistance rating. In addition to the full capabilities of the Android WearTM platform and apps, the smartwatch introduces Nixon’s custom Mission app powered by Surfline and Snocountry. The Mission app places live conditions information at a glance of the wrist and features a custom activity-tracking application developed in partnership with Trace, the leader in action sports activity tracking.

And with built-in GPS, this watch could be a prime  replacement for the Garmin fenix 3 that is currently occupying our wrist. But we won’t be sure about that until we get one to test out for a couple weeks. For the official word from Nixon, please follow the jump.

Garmin Upgrades Snowboarding Smart Watch

by The Editors on February 19, 2016

One of our favorite action sporting GPS smart watches, the Garmin Vivoactive, is getting a nice upgrade this spring with the addition heart-rate monitoring, a completely redesigned case, and built-in snowboard activity tracking. The new watch is called the Garmin Vivoactive HR.

The snowboarding app measures 3-D speed by calculating the speed and distance on an incline versus latitude and longitude. It also provides splits automatically and features Auto Pause, which freezes the timer automatically when users stop or ride the lift.

We like it for the snowboarding app, but not only that, the Vivoactive HR does smart notifications better than most. It allows you to get texts and emails (and even answer your phone) on your wrist without having to dig for your phone and it will run for up to eight days on a single charge. For the official word from Garmin, please follow the jump.

Channel Islands Builds In GPS Tracking

by The Editors on November 17, 2015

Trace CI photoTrace, makers of a small GPS and accelerometer data recorder, has teamed up with Channel Islands Surfboards to test various attributes of their surfboard designs.

Using Trace, Channel Islands will study everything from new materials, surfboard outlines, rockers and a lot more by measuring acceleration, turns, cutbacks, speed, distance traveled, time in water, time paddling.

Now, thanks to a deal Channel Islands, the Trace is being build into select surfboards.

“Using Trace with Channel Islands to help futher push board design, and having Traces come embedded in CI boards is a dream come true. by The Editors on October 29, 2015

ollo_rg

We’ve all heard how one day soon (some would argue it already happened) the iPhone’s camera will outpace the DSLRs and the camera business will come crashing down around Apple’s feet. Well, a good way to be ready for that day is with an olloclip 4-IN-1 lens.

Aeon Smooths Out Rough Action Cams

by The Editors on September 29, 2015

We’ve seen a lot of gimbal designs that looked great and then never really materialized. This Aeon unit looks like it could help smooth out even the roughest hand held action cam footage, so we hope they actually produce them for the public. Developers are calling it the. . .

. . . world’s most ergonomic and lightweight filmmaking tool for creating buttery smooth, cinematic GoPro® videos. We’re putting an end to boring videos with a robotic handheld stabilizer that keeps your camera steady so you may run, jump and move about freely and still get a perfectly stable shot every time.

Apparently, Bucky Lasek, Andy Mac, PLG, Elliot Sloan, and Kelvin Hoefler have tested it out. If you’d like to get one early click the link for the Aeon’s Indiegogo campaign.

Nintendo Splatoon Takes Over Skatepark

by The Editors on June 1, 2015

Seeing as Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 will not be coming out on Wii U, we were thinking that maybe he could do some kind of collab with Nintendo on a game that melds THPS 5 with the just launched first person paint splatter fest Splatoon. It might looks something like this that went down at the UK’s Adrenaline Alley skatepark. They could even call it Splatony Hawk Pro Skater. Come on. Give it a go?

Sean Malto’s Got A Whole New Bag

by The Editors on May 21, 2015

Uby4Cbqjvmeuq7E6Qs45Frx3Iiiit Saby5QgivfdqgWe haven’t really figured any reason to carry an iPad or and iPad Mini around with us when we already have our phone. But Sean Malto rocks his all the time and apparently didn’t have a nice way to keep it protected while on the road.

Incase helped him out with that in the form of the Incase x Sean Malto Field Bag. It’s got a padded main zippered enclosure and a flip down flap that makes using the iPad mini possible without even opening the bag. There’s even a hole for the camera.

“Whether we’re filming locally or across the globe, I’m always looking for ways to minimize what I carry when I travel and wanted something clean yet super functional without having to carry a larger bag,” says Malto. “The team at Incase and I were able to build something that delivers exactly what I use day in and day out with simple lines, total protection and ideal organization.”

For the official word from Incase, including all the details on this $99.95 bag, follow the jump. [click to continue…]
