686 Climbs Back Into The Internet Saddle

by The Editors on March 3, 2011

Spring Banner 3 11

After a winter of “technical issues” the 686 website is back up to full “on” status with their new 2011 Spring Collection. Here’s what they have to say about it:

We do apologize greatly for our internet absence the last few weeks. If we told you what happened, you wouldn’t believe us, so we’re just going to keep it quiet and tell you that the offending parties responsible for the collapse of the 686.com empire have been dealt with appropriately. We made them take a few runs nude during the last big storm and now all is right in the world.

Having experienced similar issues (June 2010) we feel for them and are glad the’re back.

by The Editors on February 25, 2011

50494 106094462763072 4683492 NLooters emptied the Quiksilver outlet store in New Brighton, New Zealand (a suburb of Christchurch) following the Monday, February 21, 2011 earthquake in which at least 123 people have died, according to a story on Stuff.co.nz.

Staff hastily secured the store after the quake before rushing off to check on their families. . . Employee Marcel Hoogerwerf discovered the looting on Wednesday morning when he went to assess the damage. . . “They’ve just stolen jeans, hoodies, shoes and shorts,” he said. “I know I don’t own the gear but I feel semi-responsible for it. . . “They’ve taken luggage to put the stolen gear in. They’ve gone shopping when no one’s been here.”

Looters also made off with what Stuff reported as “a small amount of cash was also taken.” Classy.

by The Editors on February 24, 2011

Volcom-OutletVolcom today (February 24, 2011) released their fourth quarter and full-year financials along with news that they will purchase 10 of their outlet stores from a licensee. Not a bad way to build the retail portfolio while managing overstock.

As part of the company’s direct to consumer strategy, Volcom has signed a definitive agreement to terminate the current Volcom outlet license agreement and purchase the assets related to the operation of the 10 existing Volcom outlet stores, which are located in California (4), Nevada (3), Washington (2) and Utah (1). The company anticipates completing the transaction by mid-2011. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Here’s how the quarterly numbers looked according to a filing with the SEC:

For the 2010 fourth quarter, total consolidated revenues increased 22.4% to $78.6 million, compared with $64.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2009. Total revenues in the company’s U.S. segment were $54.3 million, compared with $46.0 million in the prior-year period. Total revenues in the company’s Europe segment were $12.8 million, compared with $12.9 million in the same period in 2009. Total revenues in the company’s Electric segment were $6.4 million, compared with $5.3 million in 2009. Total revenues in the company’s Australia segment were $5.1 million.

Alana Blanchard’s Rip Curl Bikini Work

by The Editors on February 16, 2011

Alana Sand

Tonight (February 16, 2011) “smoking hot pro surfer” Alana Blanchard will be on Fuel TV’s The Daily Habit to apparently “catch up on bikinis and her upcoming return to the WCT,” according to Fuel TV.

We’ve never read anything about her “bikini work” before, but a quick look through Rip Curl bikini catalog brought us right up to speed. For Alana’s real fans we recommend the “full-screen” option.

Ugg Boots Founder Got Out Early

by The Editors on February 14, 2011

046281-Shane-Stedman-1In 1983 Ugg Boot inventor Shane Stedman sold the rights to his footwear brand to Deckers for £10,000. It was the best thing he ever did, according to a story on News.com.au.

If I had wanted to make my Uggs the number one brand, I’d have had to move to the US and work my arse off in a suit and that’s just not me,” Mr Stedman said. . . “I’ll never give up Sydney and surfing. It’s my life.. . “So I was happy to let (the business) go.”

Stedman put his kids through five years of private school with the money and still gets three free pairs of boots a year. Can’t say we blame him for that. The boots, however, is a completely different matter.

Billabong’s Burning Flip-Flops?

by The Editors on February 11, 2011

JandalAlice Walker, a woman in New Zealand, is saying that a pair of Billabong flips-flops burned the tops of her feet so badly that she could not walk, according to a story on 3news.co.nz.

“It wasn’t when I was wearing them, it was afterwards I started feeling a burn in between my toes and then gradually over about three or four days the burns turned into great big welts in the shape of jandals.” . . Ms Walker says she had been wearing them for about a month before the burns occurred. . . “I think the coating around the actual foot part of the jandal had worn off and when it got down to the rubber, that’s when something happened.”

The “jandals” are currently being tested by Billabong and Walker reportedly just wants to make sure the same thing “doesn’t happen to anyone else.” Be careful out there.

Supreme x Lady Gaga

by The Editors on February 9, 2011

Gaga

She’s got an amazing voice and tickles the ivories like few women can, but we’ve never actually enjoyed looking at Lady Gaga. That may have changed with Terry Richardson photos of the Lady for Purple Magazine. Who knew that all she needed to look reasonably normal was a Supreme deck and some shades. Click the link for the rest.

Spy x Ken Block x Zumiez

by The Editors on February 8, 2011

Kb SpySpy Optic just released an eight-piece collection of their standard issue sunglasses modified by Ken Block. They say the limited edition run is in the “spirit of all things Block.” The catch? They are only available at Zumiez and Zumiez.com. You know. The mall store that specializes in rally cars, rally car fashion, and rally car super stars. . . oh, wait. No?

We’ll apologize, but we continue to be fascinated by what Block has been able to do with his personal brand after selling DC Shoes to Quiksilver in 2004. There is no better second act in action sports.
