Just got a press release from BMBC (press releases are what we do now, if you hadn’t noticed) mentioning something about Barrett Christy and how she’s riding some product they make. (Yeah, buy some of whatever that is for Christmas, please.) Anyway, they linked to this video (Our Best Rider Is A Girl: 20 Years Of Barrett Christy) which reminded us how much we love watching Barrett ride and what a seriously cool human she is. The dream of the perfect artificial wave is turning into a nightmare for Coors brewing heir Doug Coors and his crew at Autin, Texas’ NLand Surfpark.
After clearing numerous legal hurdles regarding dunking people into a pond of standing water, the Wave Garden park opened on October 7, 2016 only to close three weeks later after they were forced to drain the pool to make repairs (flooding local streets in the process), according to a story on KXAN. The park hasn’t been open since.
“While this is disappointing for us all, we turn our focus to 2017 and the exciting plans we have in store. One hint: hops,” founder Doug Coors, whose relatives started Colorado-based Coors Brewing Company, said. In an email to KXAN, a spokesperson confirmed there will be a brewery on site sometime in 2017.
Ah yes, beer — the international problem solver. Sounds like an NLand Brewery might have been a better idea than a surf park. If there’s one thing everyone loves it’s beer. Wave pool surfing in brown water? Not so much.

This Thursday, December 15, 2016 legendary skateboarding photographer J. Grant Brittain will be showing many of his iconic skate images in a gallery setting at Univ in Encinitas, California.
The event represents a long-standing friendship between Grant and SLVDR‘s Tim Swart and the opportunity to showcase many from the vault of Grant’s 37 years of iconic skateboard imagery. Grant‘s photos have helped document the progression and creativity of skateboarding for decades. “Archive” will highlight many of the classic photos and some not often seen over the years.
The show opens at 7 PM and will feature music by Chris Cote. Univ is located at 1053 S. Coast Highway, in Encinitas, California. For the official word from SLVDR, please follow the jump.

Transworld Snowboarding, Surfer, Surfing, Snowboarder etc.’s parent company Ten: The Enthusiast Network has just hired Micah Abrams (handsome man on the right) as the company’s Group Content Director. That’s a good sign, right? We’re always happy when media companies invest in editorially minded content people.
“Micah is an important senior addition to our team as we continue to evolve and expand our content offerings across multiple channels of distribution,” said Norb Garrett, Executive Vice President and General Manager of TEN’s Sports and Entertainment Group. “His experience in the digital space coupled with his deep knowledge of the action/outdoor world enables him to have an immediate impact on how we maximize our content strategies and grow our audiences.”
Micah isn’t exactly new to this media family. He was editor of Transworld’s freeskiing magazine Freeze, until its demise in November of 2004. Most recently he was editorial director at Fatherly, a mommy blog for daddies, and he’s written the script for Warren Miller’s ski movies for over a decade (we never held that against him). Vans has announced the schedule for their 2017 Vans Park Series. The second annual event is the official International Skateboarding Federation World Championship park terrain tour with contests around the world.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled by the phenomenal success of Vans Park Series in our first season out of the gates and we are stoked to be making history once again as we expand in 2017.” – Justin Regan, Dir. of Global Marketing, Skateboarding at Vans.

Now is the time to turn in your application for a skatepark building grant from the Tony Hawk Foundation. The Foundation only accepts applications from communities twice a year. The current application period is live on the foundation’s Web site and will be open until January 16, 2017.
THF funding won’t pay for the whole park, but as many cities have found out, getting a Tony Hawk Foundation grant really helps jumpstart fundraising.
“The value of winning the Tony Hawk Foundation Grant cannot be measured by sheer numbers,” said Sarah Anderson, who led the Nyack, New York public skatepark to its grand opening in 2015. “The esteemed THF grant not only filled the skatepark coffer, it legitimized the project in the eyes of the public and activated donors, both public and private, to carry us forward to the finish line.”

John John Florence had a great 2016. No other way to say it. All that talk (years ago) about him being a future world champion turned out to be true. He’s still smiling. Winning contests, and he’s still got Pipe this week. Which means, there may be even more to celebrate before this year is over.
