Frequency: The Snowboarder’s Journal On iPad

by The Editors on September 12, 2012

Frqdigi 01

Frequency: The Snowboarder’s Journal announced that they’ve made their award-winning magazine content available on Apple’s iPad.

“This is a great opportunity for ourselves and our advertisers to bring frequency TSJ to new audiences,” says Publisher Jeff Galbraith. “It’s been a long while in development and it’s been worth it. Holding off on producing another web flip-book in deference for a real product in keeping with our brand was a good call. This is a true complement to the ten-year legacy of frequency TSJ.”

The digital version of the magazine is available in the iTunes click here. Single issues are $9.99 and a year subscription is $29.99. Follow the jump for the official details. [click to continue…]

Youtube To Cut Low Performing Video Partners

by The Editors on August 27, 2012

Youtube LogoAccording to a story in the New York Post some of those Youtube-sponsored video content channels that were funded with $100 million in January 2012 may be cut from the team before even finishing out the year.

“They’ll cull the herd and work with the best,” said one source who suggests YouTube execs will be deep in discussions on its original-content initiative 2.0 plan over the next few weeks — and that the ax will fall on the less popular channels before Dec. 31, The Post has learned.

Depending on what Youtube designates “less popular” it could mean some business model changes for Redbull Media House, Network A, The Ride Channel, and Alli Sports.

Let’s see how the channels have done since our last Youtube Action Channel Tote Board action channels on March 15, 2012 (remembering of course, that Transworld.TV is not a Youtube partner site).

Subs Mar Views Mar Subs Aug Views Aug Subs Inc Views Inc
Redbull 386,626 259,389,937 513,402 317,789,299 126,776 58,399,362
Alli Sports 28,240 10,134,195 47,629 16,325,205 19,389 6,191,010
Transworld TV 10,526 5,470,641 17,617 7,613,161 7,091 2,142,520
Ride Channel 32,329 4,164,433 92,663 17,309,062 60,334 13,144,629
Network A 28,320 1,951,528 64,732 7,210,656 36,412 5,259,138

Based on these numbers (taken from the header of each channel) the channels have the following average views per month and would generate the monthly revenues at the “oft quoted quality content” CPM of $20:

                     Monthly Views Monthly Revenue
Redbull Media House 11,679,872 $233,597
Ride Channel 2,628,925 $52,578
Alli Sports 1,238,202 $24,764
Network A 1,051,828 $21,036
Transworld TV 428,504 $8,570

We don’t know what Youtube’s expectations were, but we’d guess that Redbull Media House may be in the proper revenue generation range. When you compare the revenue being generated to the $1 million Youtube fronted each channel the gaps between the become even more apparent. Redbull would earn its investment back in a little over 4 months. At the Ride Channel it would take a year-and-a-half, while at Alli Sports and Network A it will take well over three years. Depending on how Youtube is thinking that could be a long, long time.

Unbeknownst to us Peter King, the pro surfer, former MTV personality, and photographer, is back in the TV hosting game with a reality show for the Outdoor Channel called Project Dominion.

Along with co-host MMA fighter Jamie Toney, and Dennis Deutsch, PK reportedly goes along on hunting and fishing trips and then comes back to tell us all about it. As much as we love watching PK on camera, we’re not sure we’re going to be able to sit through much of this. Check it out yourself.

Surfer Magazine Launches Salted For Girls

by The Editors on July 30, 2012

Surfer Magazine gives the “for girls” publication genre another go with Salted, “a much-overdue homage to women’s surfing,” according to the release.

“There are so many amazing female surfers right now and so many interesting stories that aren’t being told,” says SURFER Magazine Managing Editor, Janna Irons. “It’s great to finally give them the attention they deserve—and to have a home for all the beautiful images we’ve collected. I’m so excited we were able to create something that celebrates all we’ve been missing out on.”

We’ll say this again: if advertisers want to keep spending money on magazines that their target market will never read, why should publishers get in the way. Take the money, make the profit, and move on. Salted will be on newsstands until October 16, 2012 and as an annual one-off we could see it working. Hollywood hits the NorCal surf in the Jay Moriarity bio-pic Chasing Mavericks staring an nearly drowned Gerard Butler and Jonny Weston as Jay. Sadly, we all know how the story ends. Still, seems Chasing Mavericks will be a prime addition to Hollywood vs. surfing discussions for years to come.

BNQT Gets Balled Up Into USA Today Digital

by The Editors on June 28, 2012

Bnqt Logo-1BNQT the “action sports” content aggregation site owned by USA Today has some new division mates as the parent company rolls all their online sports properties (MMAjunkie.com, Big Lead Sports properties, etc. . . ) into one mammoth sporting media property called USA Today Sports Digital Properties.

“USA TODAY Sports Digital Properties is designed to strategically integrate our premium sports properties to create compelling content for sports fans,” said Tom Beusse, President of the USA TODAY Sports Media Group. “Chris brings the digital marketing expertise necessary to lead this team, which we believe will make USA TODAY Sports Digital Properties a one-stop shop for fans, and for brand advertisers seeking to engage sports fans in meaningful and unique ways.”

Those following along will remember that Beusse was once responsible for Transworld Media properties as the top dog at Time4 Media (until it was sold to The Bonnier Corp in early 2007). Not to worry, however, as this merger probably won’t have any effect whatsoever on BNQT’s compelling bikini girl coverage. Follow the jump for the official release. [click to continue…]

by The Editors on June 5, 2012

Later Magazine CoverRyan Stutt and the die-hard print magazine enthusiasts behind the Canadian skate and snow magazines King Shit and King Snow are diving into the travel magazine world with a new titled called Later. Here’s their elevator pitch:

It features content from all over the globe and from a hugely diverse group of contributors —from pro surfers, skateboarders and snowboarders, to random people who just had a funny story from the road. . . “When all is said and done, you’ll never remember that week you worked overtime and went to sleep early, but passing out on a Mexican beach, getting robbed and scoring the best waves of your life are memories that will last forever,” said Editor Andrew Sayer.

From the looks of King Shit and King Snow, Later will be a lush, quality papered, fifth-color-and-varnish magazine that will go great on the coffee table, and with Keith Malloy man-handling a squid on the first cover Later promises to be “authentically hip.” Follow the jump for the official word. Google Marks $200 Million More For Channels

by The Editors on May 3, 2012

Youtube LogoRemember those Youtube special content channels that launched in January 2012 with $100 million from Google? Tony Hawk’s Ride Channel, Network_A, Alli Sports? Etc. . .

Well, now, according to a story on Yahoo News, Google is promising to spend $200 million more to market those channels in hopes of getting a little more traffic that they can sell to other advertisers.

Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s global head of content, pledged that YouTube will spend more than $200 million to market the channels across Google and its advertising network. After years of relying largely on user-created videos, YouTube has increasingly focused on partnering with premium content providers to lure audiences for longer viewings and attract advertisers with higher quality videos.

If Google is only going to promote the channels on “Google and it’s advertising network” it would appear that what Kyncl use of the word “spend” is a little disingenuous as running ads on its own network technically doesn’t cost Google anything. But it makes a great headline.
