Snowboarder Dies In Whitefish Tree Well

by The Editors on January 9, 2011

WhitefishAfter having been reported missing at Montana’s Whitefish Mountain Resort on Saturday afternoon, an unnamed 29-year-old snowboarder was found dead by patrollers. He was in a tree well, according to a story in the Whitefish Pilot.

The victim is a Flathead County resident, but his name is being withheld pending notification of family members. The man was snowboarding alone, but had gone to the resort with friends, according to the sheriff’s report. . . This is the second tree-well related death on Big Mountain in the past two weeks.

Sadly, the snowboarder (who is the 10th snowboarder to die in North America since December 20, 2010)was one of two deaths on the mountain Saturday. Another unnamed man was also found unconscious and died later at the hospital, according to a story on KRTV.com. Our thoughts are the families and friends of both men.

Timmy Curran Wins Katin Pro-Am

by The Editors on January 8, 2011

Timmycurran Bhw5481

We didn’t pay attention enough to understand how the four-man scoring worked at the Katin Pro-Am held on the North side of the Huntington Beach Pier this weekend (January 7-8, 2011), but apparently Timmy Curran did.

Curran lived up to his reputation as one of the game’s top aerial specialists, launching the event’s most progressive maneuvers in the Final to notch the highest single-wave score of a near-perfect 9.77 out of 10 for a massive frontside air-reverse on a lefthand ramp on the way to earning the event’s highest heat-total, 18.50 out of 20, to leave fellow finalists Chris Waring (Seal Beach, CA), 23, Micah Byrne (Huntington Beach, CA), 29, and Tanner Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA), 22, in need of two scores to overtake the high-flying goofy-footer.

by The Editors on January 8, 2011

We probably would have scored the men’s final of the O’Neill Evolution Slopestyle a little differently than the judges did, but that shouldn’t take anything away from the guys on the podium in Davos. Official details results after the jump

Agenda’s Aaron Levant & Trade Show Trajectory

by The Editors on January 7, 2011

Aaron LevantFor the past eight years, Agenda Show founders Aaron Levant and Seth Haber have pushed ahead with a cool, small trade show that promoted authentic street brands.

In the face of competition from much larger organizations like Magic, ASR, and Surf Expo they’d been able to carve out a small, successful corner of the fashion trade show business. The show was growing even though each year it was becoming more and more of a head-to-head race with ASR.

Then, at the beginning of November 2010, Nielsen Expositions announced it was shutting down the ASR Show entirely. Suddenly, Agenda’s most direct competition was gone. At that time we tried to speak with Levant about how the announcement would change the trade show game, but he wasn’t interested in discussing it then.

Yesterday (January 6, 2011), we caught Levant in the lobby of the packed Agenda Show in Anaheim’s Marriott Convention Center. This year’s show is made up of several sections: Agenda, The Berrics Agenda skateboard show, and the all-new Agenda Snow. All told, the show fills 80,000 square feet of floorspace and features 300 brands. Levant and Haber’s little show has become quite large.

Follow the jump for the rest of the story.

Apparently, Reef is doing so well that they no longer need anyone in the “senior marketing position.” Follow the jump for more.

Agenda Packs The Aisles

by The Editors on January 6, 2011

Agenda 1

Those who thought the death of the ASR Show signaled the death of action sports trade shows in general were proven grossly wrong during day one of the Agenda Show in Anaheim, California January 6, 2011. All three halls were packed to the point of making it difficult to cruise the aisles. And it wasn’t people just hanging out. Lines were being shown and in many cases orders were being written.

While some brands we spoke to seemed relieved that they didn’t have to be at ASR this year, others mentioned missing the old days when Agenda was just a small show for the cool kids. Agenda has definitely kicked it up a level this year and nearly everyone seems happy about it. Even those who seem nostalgic for the past.

More later. We still have aisles to walk. Until then check out this photo gallery from day one.
