By looking at the list of snowboarders the US is taking to the 2011 FIS World Snowboarding Championships it would appear that being FIS world champion isn’t that big of a deal to anyone anymore (which seems kind of strange).
Who will be leading the US charge for the men in the World Championship halfpipe in La Molina, Spain Jan. 15-22, 2011? Paul Brichta, Benji Farrow, and Taylor Gold. Who? Looks like the disconnect between the best snowboarders in the world and the “world championships” continues. It really is a completely different universe.

The Association of Magazine Media (formerly known as the Magazine Publishers of America) has announced magazine advertising results for Q4 (October through December 2010) and things are looking up (at least vs. 2009) at action sports only tracked titles, Transworld Media.
If we look back to Q4 2008 we can see there is still a ways to go before things are really back, but moving in the right direction is a great start, at least at Transworld.
And now for the old news department: Yes, the rumor we’ve been sitting on for nearly a month is true: The La Jolla Group has handed the . . . Lost clothing license back to co-owners Matt Biolos and Joel Cooper, according to a story on ApparelNews.net.
“There was a disparity between the clothing and the boards,” Biolos told the trade publication. “The two parts of the business didn’t relate to each other. Taking the apparel back [in-house] gives us a chance to do our own thing. We want our vibe to be consistent.”
“Disparity” is such a nice way of saying it. We’re pretty sure there is no great love lost between the “edgy” surf brand and the main stream fashion licensing corporation. It will be good to see Biolos and crew back to creating some authentic surf/skate fashion on their own with no apologies.
Nearly 300 people were stranded for two hours on Whistler’s Village Gondola yesterday (Monday, January 10, 2010) around 9:45 AM, according to a story on The Province.
[One trapped woman] said she phoned the mountain’s toll-free number twice, but was disconnected both times. She then checked the mountain’s social media pages, only to be frustrated by a lack of details. . . “Being stuck that long and not being able to contact the staff at Whistler was really aggravating,” she said. “We kept checking Facebook and Twitter and they weren’t saying anything except that it was a mechanical issue.”
The gondola finally moved enough to allow all the guests to exit. Those stranded were reportedly given food and drink vouchers and free lift passes. The gondola is reportedly closed until the cause of the problem can be completely investigated. This is just the latest in a seemingly annual lift and/or gondola failure at the financially troubled resort.
This week the quaint ski village of Keystone Resort, Colorado is going to be over run by Zumiez sales zombies as the action mall retailer hosts it’s annual $100K party to reward all their store employees who have moved more than $100,000 in product in this economy. Awards are given to the top sales people and the awards are presented by the biggest names in action sports. Seriously, there is no larger gathering of heavyweights assembled for anything.
Okay, so we all know this. But we did see something interesting on the presenters list:
See that last name? Yeah. It’s Chris Cole presenting for DC Shoes (not Fallen). Kind of old news for the insiders, but still good to see it in print. Welcome to Quiksilver, Mr. Cole. Guess we’ll be seeing a lot more of him at The Berrics this year.
The Good Design Awards are pretty OG. Here is the history:
